Lots of traffic, everybody goes south. Once you resch here, you’ve made it to guangzhou. People were so friendly and interested. Layout of the station is compact but lot’s of parking for trucks too. Took less than 5min. Great spot!

Big station with bad layout. Lots of people and traffic but you won’t be able to cover even 50% by standing on one door. It took me 30min and some asking around to catch a truck driver. Trashed cabin but took me far.

Toll station. It seemed like the last resort but even this failed. I don't think it's possible to go from CQ to East/South via this route. Two cars stopped but they went to CQ. Friendly people but wrong direction. We gave up and took the train. What a wasted day - anyways, the next day will be better :)

Mid station. Not much traffic but at least the stores were open. Some shade and people. Nobody was very useful tbh. Going to CQ to South/East through this route seems bad. Better try Guiyang/Guilin. A english teacher picked us up and got us off the highway.

Friendly staff and we met any people we saw at the station prior. The fruit sellerrs gave us a bunch of very strange looking fruits for free. The staff of the station organized a ride for us. We waited around 30min before getting picked up by a old strange family. They took us further then planned. The highway from here on is veeeery pretty. Worth the ride!!

Mixed feelings about the spot. One the one hand it is good because all the traffic will go towards east (besides a few cars that are heading south to the airport). On the other this service area is dead. No shop, gas station is abandoned, no restaurant - the drivers will see all of this on their navigation apps and not stop there. We were lucky and after 30min a nice couple took us all the way to Xichang - but maybe the more busy service area a few km beofer this one would be better (oft some cars might not go towards east but still). Toilet and shady rest area are available.

Last tarffic light before the toll station. The first car took us to Lijiang. We showed a sign saying Chengdu/Lijiang (chinese characters) and it worked great. There is a gas station + lots of traffic as it is the only way south from Shangri-La

Lots of traffic and toll station staff. No shade and it took suprisingly long to catch a ride. Some cars stopped and asked for money (which never happend to me in over 2500km of hh in China - not sure why this is different). There is a long distance bus stop with regular busses to Shangri-La / Lijiang (if you ever wanna give up). We were not allowed to stand behind the toll gate but there is enough room (chinese stop everywhere anyways lmao) for cars to stop. It might (??) be more traffic south then north but still a good spot.

Big rest area (including tank display and kart). We waited around 60min near the restaurant area, after that we moved to the onramp after the big (there are two) gas station. Not even 5min of waiting a guy with nice merc pulled up and took us to Dali. He invited us for lunch (taste was very mid). I think it's a great spot and could be faster than the tollstation (but we took a cap for around 50rmb to reach there).

(ignore my first review below) Honestly, it's a great spot. Close to the onramp of the highway, enough space at the 7-eleven parking lot and lot's of traffic. I did not think it would be so easy but after 20min I got a ride all the way to Fukuoka. They did not take the highway but the slower, non toll road but whatever.

Smaller station and little off the highway. Medium traffic in the afternoon but almost no shade. Small station = all the people can see you and need to walk past you. I was refining my kanji sign while a port worker approved me. He took me all the way to my hostel and even dropped me off right in front off it. Obviously he gave me some tea and water before letting me go.

Big station with very little traffic = hard to catch all the people. Toilets are a little far from the store so you need to decide for one. To draw a little more attention I got rid of my sign and started writing a new one. Buch of people came over to check on the foreigner writing kanji. Worked great and I got a ride quickly.

In the morning I took the bus to the SA. It only runs every few hours. From the busstop it's short walk up the hill. Because the station is a on/off ramp no fences are involved. I always stand in front of the toilet or store to catch most people. It took some time but a older man with a dope ass truck took. He even searched around to find my next ride, which made me a little umcomfy.

Shortly after eating my lunch I was approched by a truck driver. He took me all the way to Hiroshima (including a second lunch along the way). Japanese people are so friendly and according to hichwiki you should not refuse the free meals/gifts. Station is big but was not very busy. Make sure to use a sign in kanji and look tidy.

I came here after failing at the other spot more towards the city. It was very busy (weekday morning) but people did not pay a lot of attention to me or my sign (in kanji). After around 1,5 hours I was picked up by a guy who bought me lunch at the next stop. Access to the SA is good (by train and then walk) and no fences need to be climbed. Just make sure to stand on the correct side (I used the other side then marked but yk, same station so this spot should be used).

I wanted to go south-east (towards Hiroshima) and there was no option. I guess most people will use the junction to turn west before this station. After 1,5h I switched to the other side to hh to the service area around 30min north (close to Kyoto) but not even that worked. It was very busy but mostly families and full cars (sunday morning). I cannot recommend this location if you try to head to the south-east.

Not sure, but I ended up paying for the ride from here (5 Euro). He commercial driver took me right to the border. There are some checkpoint on the way. They will ask you some questions and tell you that you kinda need to cross if you go further. I'm not sure if it's legally allowed to hh across those checkpoints (they are further south, before the city), but taking the commercial ride which was arranged by my last drier who took me for free, was a good idea. The border was open at 6pm (chinese time) and should be open till 10pm. Chinese side is very modern and quick, Vietnam is rather slow but works too. I really enjoyed this trip across China and can recommend it to anyone (as long as you're not bothered by the police and politics, don't close your eyes too much and always be aware of the background you're moving in)!! Literally got dropped my taxi and offered a guy a cig. He asked where I want to go and it turned out that he is a mini van driver. He had a spare seat and offered to take me for a few Euros. I rejected the offer, trying to explain that I hh. He ended up taking me for free, even though I was not sure if he goes to the border or not. He dropped me at some reststop, where (idk tbh) some friends (?) waited for me. I ended up paying 5 Euro for the last 40 or so km. He brought me directly to the border gate which was nice. At the end I think it would be possible to go for free.

After failing at the toll station below I came here by taxi. You can cross the side through a tunnel. As usual people are very much interested in you. Some ignore and some are very helpful. A father and son ended up taking me towards Mile after less then 10min. It shows: Reststops are the way to go!

Horrible spot. I ended up taking a small bus from Kunming to Lunan/Stone Forst. They will drop you a less than 1km from here. The toll station has staffed by the most annoying chinese people ever. Not only was I told that I cannot stand behaind the barrier, but not even in front (which is 100% legal). Well, they called the police and 10 of them spawned, telling me I don't have a visa and will get deported (my country has 30days visa free). 60min wasted. I ended up standing below the bridge, but it cars are minimal and go too fast. At the end I took a taxi to the rest stop lil up from this location.

Mixed feelings about this spot. It's a service area/gas station/restaurant and onramp combination but you can't cover both. Minimal traffic and most people ignored me (not even talking to me) and busses/tours/minivans won't take you. Also most people just head to the closeby scenic areas. I ended up standing little further on the onramp and a lovely truck driver took me all the way to Kunming. It's a hilly ride, pretty views and great road to hh. Be aware: (Car) Traffic further west is suuuuper light. At some points almost zero. Maybe the newer highway is better (more cars, even less trucks) if you can't find a ride all the ways. Trucks use this highway tho but can be super slow. Good luck!

This spot did not work for me. The staff at the toll station was very strict about hh. The requested me to stand before the gate where cars go very fast (way more dangerous than after the gate). The told me that the Minister of Transport will visit the highway on this day. Maybe this had an impact. I waited 60min and then decided that it's a dead spot. Just took a quick taxi to the next service area.

Gas station and medium to low traffic. Staff helped me to build and write a small sign. Lovely people and then the showed me pictures of prior hh that stopped there. Funny shit! I only use the sign to show that I want to go somewhere. Ususally it's not thaaat helpful as many drivers have trouble reading it or just don't care. I ended up speaking to a few people and they agreed to take me. Horrible ride as one of them smelled like a homeless person (nothing against the poor) and the driver was watching TikToks (chinese version) on full blast. They refused to drop me at the city entrence and took me too far.

The police of my last ride took me to the next police checkpoint. Here I had to wait again but they bought me food and water. No way to reject it. They told me to wait and organised a nice truck driver who took me. Horrible ride as the mountains are steep so try to catch a car. Took over 3h for a 2h car ride. Big station and a lot of traffic - but as usual the police is not a big fan of it. I had to wait for two team leaders to come, had a 1h discussion only for them to take to the next reststop. They tried to tell me that hh is not allowed in China - just stand your ground. You can take the Metro Line 3 to the closest station and then taxi to the road left to it. From there you can hop the fence and sneak past the police. Don't worry, they will come anyways.

I had a look around the market. After getting few rides in China: 1. Don‘t use a sign - just wave 2. Talking with translation apps works good 3. The chinese are incredibly hospitable

Big toll station. Had a discussion with the police if I could stand there. Usually it‘s fine but those guys were annoying. After getting cleared I walked behind the toll gate (usually work better) but then the staff harassed me. After 30mins of discussion they understood and allowed it too. Pro Tip: Don‘t reject rides in China. They will tell you that they won‘t go towards your direction but they do. Don‘t use a sign, just wave at them. Medium traffic on a workday morning.

DON‘T come here!!!! There is a very serious checkpoint. They told us it‘s a military area. While they were very friendly, they informed us, that we can get arrested for 10 days. They forced us to turn around with a driver they stopped. He had to bring us to the next police station in Nalati. At the police station we were treated good. They forced to check us into a hotel and told us to bugger off in the morning. They are building a new highway rn, so passing might be possible in the future. Double check with a police station before trying. They are serious.

At the drop location: There is a very serious checkpoint. They told us it‘s a military area. While they were very friendld, they informed us, that we can get arrested for 10 days. They forced us to turn around with s driver they stopped. He had to bring us to the next police station in Nalati. 2. At the pickup location: Opposite the road there is a big and serious police checkpoint. we did not see it as we came from the rural road. They asked a lot of questions on our way back. The civilian that was forced to take us to the police station helped us explaining the situation. They are building a new highway rn, so passing might be possible in the future. Double check with a police station before trying. They are serious.

NO A HITCH Busses to China leave from here. You can‘t hitch the border. The last bus of the day goes at 6pm (THIS MIGHT CHANGE). It costs 5000 and tickets can be bought with card. Crossing was easy and took 2-3h (+3h time difference). Be ready to take out all metals from your bag. Good luck!

Perfect spot. There is a small bus station and a roundabout managed by traffic police. Just stand on the highway after the roundabout. They did not bother me. After 20min a Truck driver stopped (waved at him with sign) and offered to take me. Great spot! If you end up here at night, there are pleeeeeeeenty pf minivans to all directions, a supermarket, toilett. Everything you need.

I had a ton of luck. A commercial minivan stopped and told me to get it. Prepared I said ‚para yok‘ (no money) and he insisted that I join the fully packed van. My sign had Suşehri written on it. Once we arrived I asked if I can stay till Giresun. He made a few calls and said tamam. In Şebinkarahisar we had to change driver and fan but the new one apparently knew I was HH w/o money. I felt a little bad because everyone around me was asked to pay but yk, I was clear about my budget and it worked. Thanks again to the driver(s).

Great spot. I took a shared taxi (dolmuş) from Ulus in Ankara. Ask the shops where it is. You need to say ‚dolmuş mamak autoban‘ as there are two different ones to mamak. It went at 10am so ig I goes every hour? The spot is right after a traffic lights with very heavy traffic.

Bad rating but I worked good for me. The last driver dropped me as most who don‘t go to Istanbul use the upper bridge. There is no way to walk (but you can switch the side via tunnel) to the metro (all fenced off, even if you are fine with hopping highways). I asked the police for a solution and they drove me. If the don‘t help you, there is no way to get out of there.

Did take 10min for a Truck Driver to pick me up. Medium traffic on a sunday, I tried a few other spots for hours but this seems to be the best. Truck have a toll station so they go slow. He organised another truck via CB-Radio (see next stop). Just head hear immediately if you‘re in the area. One more local men was waiting, so it seems to be a common spot.

The border is shit. Long waiting (but walkable, waiting trucks will offer food and coffee which is nice). Nobody stopped for me, Truck driver are annoyed by the 12h waiting time barely any cars (saturday evening). Police harassed me and demanded the passport ‚fast fast‘.
