Solo females. Finished the Golemo Ezero hike and walked towards Nižepole while listening for cars. Thumbed and the first car stopped for me. They were going to Bitola so they took me right to my hotel. The guy grew up here but has lived in Australia for many years, building his retirement home here lol. Cool background! Seems that cars are way more likely to stop in a village with minimal traffic

Solo female. Somewhere near here there's a sizable shoulder for cars to stop. My goal was to reach the trailhead of the Pelister Golemo Ezero hike. Signed "Trnovo / Nižepole" and got picked up by a guy going to Nižepole, and from there I quickly got another ride to reach the trailhead

Solo female. This spot at the entrance to Lakeview Hotel is better than from the abandoned Hotel Euvopa, the autocamp, or the wildcamp spot before that, because it is not after a turn like the others, and cars are not fast for some reason (they can also see you from afar). There's a huge pullout for cars to stop Signed for Resen and Bitola (ultimate destination). A local grandpa was going to Resen but drove an extra 30km to Bitola for me🥹🥹

Solo female. Asked a random car if they were heading down toward Lake Ohrid. They initially said they had too much stuff but were then willing to reorganize to fit me in :)

Solo female. I asked my previous ride to drop me off here so I can get another ride into the national park. Traffic was very very light here at the NP entrance for the first 30min of waiting, then a bunch of cars came from the Albania direction. But many were unwilling to take me However, the fee station guy also nicely helped me ask (in Macedonian), and he found me a couple who took me to the Koritski Rid viewpoint. I just asked a car at the viewpoint to take me back down when I was done

Solo female. Sign for St Naum and got a ride from within 10min. This spot is right outside the parking lot for the museum. A decent amount of traffic and has a huge pullout for cars to stop

Solo female. Signed for St Naum and was picked up by a guy going to Gradiste in 10min. Many people are heading in that direction, but there are many beaches before St Naum so not everyone goes all the way there. So it was helpful to be taken halfway still This spot is shaded and next to the exit of a parking lot, where cars can stop. Lots of traffic and cars are slow

Solo female, thumbed without sign at around 18:30 on a workday during the summer. Many cars were leaving (1 car every 30 seconds). This stop is right by the bus station Three young Macedonian guys took me straight to Ohrid

Solo female. I came from Niš and got dropped off by the first ride (truck) here since he had to stay on the highway I could've asked for a Kumanovo drop-off but thought maybe some cars there would head south and not to Skopje. In hindsight, I should've chosen the Lukoil on the highway just south of Kumanovo because it would have way more cars In contrast, this gas station doesn't get much traffic. I mostly signed to get the cars on the road behind this gas station, and only ran to the gas station when a car pulled up. Many cars either didn't stop or were full, some local/neighborhood traffic. It was a Sunday FYI Eventually got picked up by a Macedonian couple and they dropped me off at a mall 30min walk from the center

Solo female. Asked around for Skopje but many cars were going to Bulgaria or were full (with kids/pets/grandparents). Maybe because it was a Sunday during the summer But idk if there's another spot near Niš that could be easier, since there's no gas stations on the southbound highway until almost Vranje Eventually found a big truck who dropped me off just outside of Skopje because he had to stay on the Ring Road highway

Solo female. Asked around for Niš and got a ride after asking less than 5 cars. It was a very nice car haha

I don't recommend hitchhiking southward from either this toll booth or the roundabout before it. Many cars at the roundabout are going to Belgrade, so this toll booth has few cars passing through (about 1 car every 2min). One of the two lanes is for cars with automatic payment so they don't even slow down Walk a little more to the gas station just north of Ćuprija instead

Solo female. Was gonna walk to the intersection to sign, but a family stopped and asked where I was going and drove me to Ðunis

Solo female signed Despotovac (going to Manasija) and got a ride from three locals within minutes. This spot is a bus station and cars are not fast They have super interesting art professions and one person speaks great English. They dropped me off right at Manasija on their way to a park. I actually went to find them afterwards and spent a great evening together by the creek. They also tried to find me a place to stay and drove me back to Ćuprija at night

Asked around and got a ride to Ćuprija from a Serbian couple going to Kruševac. Solo female. We couldn't communicate due to language barrier but they were super nice

I don't know if I would do this again. I took bus 70 to Tranšped and did the "hike" mentioned in the previous comment. It seems like a clear path on Google Maps satellite but some parts have become extremely overgrown, the last bit out to the gas station being the worst. You really have to spend a few mins cleaning up afterwards and might get cut by the plants At the gas station, I asked around and eventually found a Serbian-Swedish family who took me to the gas station/McDonalds before Velika Plana. Solo female.

Solo female, signed "BG" and got picked up by a mini-truck driver heading to Kruševac in 20min This spot is a bus stop, cars slow down at the intersection and can see you from afar. Can get a bit of shade from the bus stop after mid-afternoon

One male one female, signed Milići in order to head to Zvornik (and ultimately Belgrade). Cars are going kinda fast but they can see you from a distance The most wild hitchhiking experience in my life happened. Two guys driving out from the gas station said they could take us to Milići. Then on the way they said they could do Zvornik too. Eventually they said they could take us all the way to Belgrade -- and they did They're from Serbia themselves (work in BiH?) and were driving a Belgrade car, so I supposed they had family/friends here. But if I understood correctly, they were initially heading back towards Han Pijesak after dropping us off in Milići (already the opposite direction of where they were going) They treated us to snacks and drinks along the way and played cool music. The only unsettling thing was both of them each drank about 5 bottles of beer the whole way. I suppose they drink and drive often, and we arrived in Belgrade safely, but it could've not been the case

One male one female, signed Vlasenica (ultimate goal Zvornik/Belgrade). Cars are going kinda fast but they can see you from afar due to the angle of the road. No shade One local guy from Vlasenica picked us up. Speaks insanely good English, and gave us a bottle of Rakija and took us to Motel M in Vlasenica, a great restaurant for ćevapi and pljeskavica

One male one female, signed Han Pijesak. Our last driver dropped us off here cuz it's an easy hitchhiking spot before he turned into the village. Cars are not slow or fast but none stopped for us. No shade :( 30min in, traffic cops came to check on cars. we asked if they could take us when they were done, and they straight up stopped cars for us!! The first car they talked to drove us to Han Pijesak

One male one female, signed Sokolac and a guy headed towards Han Pijesak took us. This gas station might not have shade but has plenty of pull off space and cars can see you clearly Direction Zvornik/Belgrade

Signed Pale and Sokolac to get a ride to the Han Derventa junction. Waited for 90min before a guy to Pale took me (one female) No shade here but in the AM you face away from the sun

Got a ride in 10min to Mostar after signing and asking around. One guy driving to Sarajevo took me. Im one female There is a huge parking area for the restaurants and you can ask around, though people might be going in either direction. Cars driving past will be slow if there's traffic I actually wanted to go to Medugorje, but for some reason couldn't get a ride back to Čapljina from here. People didn't seem to want to take hitchhikers. Plus it's tricky to get to Medugorje from Čaplinja. So I decided to hitch back to Mostar first and take Bus 48 from there

Outside a gas station and shaded mid-morning. Signed and thumbed before approaching a couple parked at the gas station for coffee asking if they were going to Mostar. They were tourists who had just come in from Montenegro that morning and were going straight to Mostar I'm not sure how common it is for people to go to Mostar on this road (I feel like through Ljubinje is faster). Maybe I got lucky Turns out we live in the same city, same district

I wanted to go from Trebinje to Mostar. Seems that people haven't had very good luck hitchhiking from the M6/M20 freeway intersection in south Trebinje. So I thought I would try this side, because the bus to Mostar goes through Bileća, Gacko, Nevesinje, then to Mostar -- in case hitchhiking was unsuccessful, I could switch to bus This spot it right outside a gas station. I signed and thumbed. Waited for 30min before some electrician/repair guy exiting the gas station here picked me up and drove me to Bileća (they were going to Gacko, which I could've done but the way from Bileća to Mostar is more straightforward. You might need multiple rides from Gacko to Mostar) Lots of local traffic here it seems

I took the ferry from Lepetane-Kamenari as a pedestrian. Free ferry for pedestrians. On the ferry I asked several cars. Most were going west but one guy going eastward took me to Perast. One female

This is a great spot for snorkeling btw, super clear water and no one is here. Saw lots of fish, sea urchins, crabs, sea stars etc Camped here, and the next morning a fisherman came by to collect salt off the tide pools. He offered me a ride on his boat to Plavi Horizonti, where I could catch the Blueline bus back to Tivat

I simply asked in the parking lot and very quickly found two guys heading westward, so I hitched with them to Merdari (to walk down to the rocky beach to snorkel). But if you stand by the road for westbound traffic, there's a huge pullout too that'd be easy for cars to stop. No shade though

Do not make the mistake of trying to hitchhike westward at this roundabout. The road is designed in such a way that cars cannot see or stop for you. Zero shade any time of the day. Two really nice Russian guys drove me 1km to Luštica Bay as an easier place to get a ride

Heading to Petrovac. On this road, there is a lot of traffic, the traffic is slow, and the sidewalk is at the same level as the road --- so you'd have no problem being seen or the driver pulling over. Signed and thumbed. Got picked up by an Albanian tour van heading towards Croatia. One female

Good for catching drivers going straight and those out of Theth. Around 11am there seemed to be many passenger vans and private cars leaving Theth. I thumbed for 5 seconds and an Albanian family picked me up (they even woke up their boy sleeping on the back seat to make room for me!!). We stopped for coffee and strawberry-picking on the way. They were driving to Shkodër and dropped me off at the SH1/SH21 intersection outside of Koplik for me to continue on to Podgorica

Headed to Podgorica, signed and thumbed. No shade here but very good for being seen by drivers out of Koplik and those going straight after the roundabout. Waited for 20min. Saw many Montenegrin-plated cars. Apparently they are not as open to hitchhiking as the Albanians. But got picked up by a Montenegrin guy going home to Podgorica

This is outside the Bajaj Oil petrol station (red sign that says B Oil). The price board offered shade, but no more shade starting around 11:00 (in July) due to the sun's position. I wanted to go from Gjirokaster--Tirana. Signed and thumbed for 95min, unsuccessful. Maybe it was too far. I was a bit short on time, so I walked 5min south on SH4 and took a bus to Tirana. 1200 lek (in 2026) and leaves at the top of each hour

On the uphill from Mirror Beach, signed and thumbed. Cars are slow on the uphill. Within 3min, an Albanian group gave me a ride back to Sarandë

Heading to Sarandë and got a ride from a French couple within 5min. This is a roundable so cars are slow. Plus, it's where two roads meet: the road from Himarë-Sarandë, and the road for cars going Sarandë without going through Himarë. There are coach busses going from both roads, so worst comes to worst, you'll catch them Partially shaded

I wanted to go to Himarë. I was recommended to go downhill a bit to the junction at the road that goes to Dhërmi, but I didn't. This roundabout spot is very very hot, no shade, and rarely do cars take the Himarë exit (they all go downhill to Dhërmi, or going through Dhërmi is faster if one wants to reach Himarë, idk). When you're here, watch where the cars are going and choose the right roundabout exit After 10min of heat, I caught a coach bus heading to Himarë and paid 300 lekë (2026) to avoid a heatstroke

This place is shaded (late morning) and after a roundabout so cars are slow. I wanted to to go Himarë, and a truck driver drove me to just before Palasë. But cars passing by this spot supposedly could go to Himarë

This is after a roundabout + there's often traffic, so cars can see you easily; plus it's a shoulder for busses. I wanted a ride to Vlorë, perhaps this is not the best place for it since people might be going to the beach etc. A old guy gave me a ride to Orikum. He did touch me (female) and kissed me on the hand. Cultural difference or not, it's inappropriate but I suppose thats not the worst price one'd pay

The Lycian Way took me here and it's a parking lot. As I crossed the last bridge I saw a car about to drive off, so I asked them if they could take me to Kumluova and they agreed

I waited here for a ride to Kınık. The cars are slow because of the roundabout

I finished the eastbound Lycian Way hike in Gökçeören and needed a ride to Kaş. Gökçeören is a very quiet village but there are occasionally trucks/cars passing through that can take you out of the mountain. The first truck I saw picked me up. Worst comes to worst, there's a local who lives right near this spot named Hüseyin who's willing to take you in for tea and drive you out for a fee

I waited at this D350/400 intersection (westbound). It's a great spot since both the left-turning cars from D400 and the cars from D350 need to wait at a traffic light. I waited for 5min before a Izmir-bound motorcyclist picked me up and took me to Fethiye

Headed toward Fethiye, thumbed here for 5min before a Turkish couple heading to Ankara picked me up. They dropped me off at the D400/350 split-off. This is a good spot for getting a ride westward, as there's a huge shoulder, cars coming out of Kaş slow down at a stop sign, and those on D400 can see you from afar
