Super low traffic in the petrol station, moved here after an hour. Ok spot for cars to pull over just after the lights. Dabbled shade at 2pm. Had 2 people pull over but they said I could only come if I payed(?!) First time in 4 years in Europe that people have said that. Finally got a guy who was happy to take me south.

Stayed the night here under the generosity of the owners. Had a bit of a piss up with the local teachers from the area which was fun. Same as every road house coming across. EAST on my sign and I got scooped up immediately. Got lucky and shared a car all the way to Sydney. Helped the guy out sharing the driving and we got there in 2 sleeps

Walked around carpark with an EU and BE sign. Just friendly smile and chat to people. Found a family who said they were going back home that night and that they were Belg. I went with them BUT their ferry was for 9pm. I bailed at Dover and found someone else but MAKE SURE YOU FIND A PERSON HERE TO GET YOU ACROSS. It is 10x harder at Dover.

I definitely got lucky. The sports not bad at all but idk about traffic. First car got me. I originally got picked up at Maidstone by some Belgium guys, they said they were heading across but when we got into Dover they mentioned it was 9pm that night. I jumped out and thanked them but realised I either had to go back up the m20 and find someone going for the tunnel, or I was kinda screwed. This guy just happened to be really eccentric and scooped me up IF YOU WANT THE TUNNEL MAKE SURE YOUR RIDE FROM MAIDSTONE CAN GET YOU THROUGH

Had a sign for Pekanbaru, didn’t get much luck for an hour. The spot is pretty good, no shade in the day and no rain cover but there is a large spot to pull over. I was there late at night and was lucky enough to be under a street lamp. Took an hour (and 11 rejections of a lift to a bus station/directions to a bus stop) to get a lift.

I was told this was the best spot to try and get out of the town. Sounded kind of dumb and might have been. The trucks do not go through the down, but rather down and along a backroad and rejoin towards Kerinci (sus my later points) which is probably why I was dropped here. It might be smarter (if possible) to get to the east side of the city and hope for a car or ute to take you to Kerinci, then try and get a car from there. I found most people were just confused and wanted to take me to the bus station. Ended up getting moved down the road by a bike

Really good spot as the road coming out of the border checkpoint is a bit dodgy so people have to slow down. Space for them to stop in the taxi rank. Most trucks will turn left to the industrial estate at the first intersection so go for cars. Was here late in the evening but don’t think there would be shade. I got unlucky I think as there wasn’t much traffic. Be careful and don’t get stuck as the border shuts from 11pm to 5am (Thai time)

This spots a bit tricky depending on the time of day. Unfortunately most of the day it’s Vietnamese trucks which don’t go to Phnom Penh (if you’re going that way). It’s best to move a bit back from the Cambodian side of the boarder. Only maybe 100m and you’ll see that all the cars that drop people at the boarder chuck a u-ie and then come past you. Most will ask for money but with a Phnom Penh sign I got a free lift in ~30 mins (30 mins waiting at the boarder in the wrong spot)

Doesn’t show it on the maps but there’s a big wide spot on the road (under where that big arch thing is) which gives heaps of space for people to pull over. Had a Phnom Penh sign (in Khmer) which didn’t help. As soon as I wrote one for Mộc Bài I got picked up in about a minute. Most people will drive you to the border if they’re going that way

There’s a good spot for hitching after the lights but busses do regularly stop there. I had a few nice locals offer me lunch and then (after I explained to them) they explained to a bus driver and got me a free lift to ninh binh. Just got lucky but it is a good spot.
