DIRECTION CHINA 🇨🇳: I confirm that bus is mandatory to cross into China. When at the border, kazakh soldiers controlled everyone's ticket. Also, you have to take two times the bus again to cross the entire border. You can hitchhike this part I believe if you ask the guards to put you on the next bus. For men : they might ask you to shave your beard. Happened to two friends of mine. I shaved mine the day before because I did not want them to ask me to shave my moustache... Once you arrive on the Chinese side, look for a place to sleep on iOverlander or Trip.com. There H+2 with China so most probably you will arrive late. To go to Urumqi, you can follow my next spots where I can give you a detailed itinerary with tips. It's not hard. Deo Gratias!

DIRECTION HOVD 🇲🇳 : This is a very remote area of Mongolia. If you hitchhike in the cold as I did, don't do stupid things and try to always be close to civilisation. Write on a piece of paper and in Mongol, who are you, what you're doing, explain that you look for a free ride to go further. If you ask for long distance, so many people will stop just to make you pay. Also, in 2026 there is a big gas shortage in Mongolia which makes free hitchhiking even more difficult. Also, be cautious about people. unfortunately lot of people in this area suffer of severe poverty and alcoolism ; nobody will harm you tho, just keep distance if you feel like it. Also, lot of roads you see on maps are actually offroad. LOOK AT SATELLITE MAP AND PREPARE ITINERARY. Despite all this negativity, I was invited several time and people are so welcoming. I actually loved so much hitchhiking to Mörön from there ! A real adventure ! Because it was becoming dark and the border closes the evening, I asked a lady to help me find a ride to Hovd. Unfortunately it was too late and no truck was going there. The last ones just sleep close to the border for the next morning to leave, but on a different road, they don't pass through Bulgan. So instead I got a ride to Bulgan with two soldiers ~M40 and ~M50 in a van. In Bulgan, around my ending point, there is a "hotel" where I slept on the ground for 20.000MNT (5€). Check iOverlander. DIRECTION MÖRÖN 🇲🇳 : Here you can eat and sleep (for free actually, I just asked the guy in the shop on the right and he said ok). Very few people will go that way so be prepared to wait. Eventually, someone was going to Tsagaan-Uul, the village on the other side of the mountain and took me with him. Thanks Muggi ! We encountered on the way 3 people that got a problem with their car, and I spent the night at Muggi's grandma house. Next morning he paid for me a car that was going to Mörön. DIRECTION MÖRÖN 🇲🇳 : Here, my plan was to sleep at Naranbulag because it was almost dark. At my end point, you can sleep for 30.000MNT. Look iOverlander. Very little traffic but people will eventually stop. From this paved road you can get direct lift to the capital. Bus, M40 Deo gratias !

DIRECTION MÖRÖN 🇲🇳 : One of my best rides ! A couple with their baby brought me on a side quest in the middle of nowhere. They joined their family in a ger to kill a sheep, get the meat, have lunch and tea, then go to the intersection on the paved road.

DIRECTION HOVD 🇲🇳 : It will be hard to find a ride to Hovd. If you write it on a sign, peolple will just jump on you to be your personnal taxi. Do not hitchhike at the gas station ! There is almost a mafia that wants to put you in a taxi and make you pay 20$ the ride. Instead, go a bit further on the road without any sign, just use the thumb. Have a paper wrritten in Mongol (Kazakh also helpful) where you present yourself, that you want to get a ride for free to your next destination and also that few kilometers are helpful. Your objective is to go further a little by little. At some point you should get for free a ride to Hvod. Car, F35 Deo gratias !

DIRECTION MONGOLIA 🇲🇳 : Somewhere here is a truck driver place where they go in direction of Mongolia : either Hovd or Ölgiy. If you go there you can talk to them and ask if someone goes there and can take you all the way to Hovd. I managed to do that but because of miscommunication, the truck driver just wanted to drop me at the border. That was not good because it was already end of afternoon and there is no warm place to stay at the border on Mongolian side. Also, I could just find a ride earlier. Truck, M45 Deo gratias !

DIRECTION MONGOLIA 🇲🇳 : Prepare yourself to wait for long. There will be very few vehicles on the highway and even less going in this rest area but eventually you will find a ride to Qinghe where you can go to the border. DIRECTION MONGOLIA 🇲🇳 : Once at this toll station, police officers will help you find a ride that goes to Fuyan or Qinghe. You can find rides that goes in other directions also. If your objective is to go to Mongolia, ask to be dropped at the rest area before the turn of the G680. This is a ideal spot because you can spend a night for free there. There is also a shop inside where you can buy food, just in case. Minibus, ~M55 Deo gratias !

DIRECTION MONGOLIA 🇲🇳 : The objective is to go at the toll station Nord of the city on this highway. Not the best spot tho. I waited 2 hours, got visited by Police (that just wanted to help me). The problem here is that there is too much local traffic. Majority of cars take this road to go inside the industrial area from another entry point. I think it is possible to get a ride but you can find a better place, look my other spot. Deo gratias.

DIRECTION MONGOLIA 🇲🇳 : Objective : the toll station on the G7. It is not an ideal spot but it worked for me after half hour. It is better spot than my other one because, at least, here you can filter the cars that goes on the nothern direction. Cars that go out of this industrial zone are also slower so they can see you. DIRECTION URUMQI 🇨🇳 : So here I hitchhiked not on the toll station but on the Gas station that is actually closed with nothing in it, but somehow a truck stopped for me and took me all the way to Urumqi. I arrived at night, check "Hostel on the way" in Urumqi, the owner is really good and can arrange late arrivals. It's a new hostel and I paid only 6€ a night. ~M55 Deo gratias !

DIRECTION URUMQI 🇨🇳 : Is it possible to hitchhike in Xingyang ? With the help of God, everything is possible ! Hitchhiking in this province is actually lot of fun : I had no problem going from Khorgos to Mongolian border even though police visited me several times...to help me ! If you want to join Urumqi easily : 1. Use a sign with this : 搭便车 (HITCHHIKING) and get a ride on the expressway (not the highway, the road that go beside it) to Qingshuihezhen. Police visited me, very kind, just asked me where I was going and they even added 乌鲁木齐市 (Urumqi) on my sign. 2. Once in Qingshuihezhen, hitchhike on the entrance of the G30 (personally I paid a taxi 1+€ to go to the spot but you can walk). 3. Get a ride to the toll station in Guozigoukou and you should find a direct ride to Urumqi. If you can get a ride from Khorgos that goes directly to the toll of Guozigoukou it's even better. ⚠️YOU SHOULD AVOID THE SOUTHERN ROAD⚠️ Some reports (2026) says that it is not accessible for hitchhikers. Actually, I was hitchhiking on the main road before the turn but the Police gave me a ride to here hahaha. Your objective is to join the toll station in Guozigoukou. DIRECTION CHINA 🇨🇳 : To come here, you can take different buses (check 2GIS/Yandex) it should take 1h30+ from city center considering traffic in Almaty is chaotic. Here, cars and trucks will go either North either East. Personally, I have catch a small truck that was going East to Shelek and asked him to dropped me in the rest area before the town, so I could catch a longer ride. DIRECTION CHINA 🇨🇳 : Not the best spot but will work in the end. There is room to stop but trucks are going too fast. If you go for launch or dinner there will be many vehicles parked. You can eat, toilets, not too bad neither. I was taken by Omka to Jarkent where you need to pay a bus to go after the border, in a shared taxi that agreed taking me for free because I said I was hitchhiking all the way from France. Even the other people inside were joyful of helping me. I waited long time but I would say that you can find faster than me. My driver was driving at 140km/h so it was no problem hahaha M36

Here is quite a bad spot and actually all along the road until the end of the city. The sidewalks are tall and there is absolutely no room for the cars to stop. There is some small roads but I felt like I was going to wait for a long time here. Of course it is impossible for trucks to stop here, so if you search long distance on the road to Almaty, better to go further. What I did is walking to the end of the city (30mn walk) and I got instantly a truck to Chimkent.

This toll is good spot to go to Khujand. Personally it took quite long for me but in the end you will find someone. Lot of taxis. There are restaurants around but it is quite cold place to wait. Taken by a couple for 45 followed by another car with family. Rahmat Alekhan!

In Servoda you should walk after the city because there is a crazy amount of taxis that will harass you. We were 2 hitchhikers, taken in no time by a truck driver to Ayni where we separated. Inoha went left and found instantly a ride for Pamjakent and I found a ride further direction Khujand! M55

3 hitchhikers ! We waited a hour to get a free ride be Tadjik tourists, but you can also pay to go there. Some people will scam you asking more than 10$ but you can probably find a shared taxi for 1 or 2$ if you want to go faster ;) Rahmat Max and Sonya Couple~55 Also in this spot people that work close to the gate were super nice, helped us morally and gave us dry apricots. DIRECTION DUSHANBE : So easy. Just ask the guards to find you a car for free to Dushanbe. Plenty cars and trucks. Personally, I was in a truck and because of this I cannot go further for 7 hours : the road was blocked because president was in Kulob. That's why I ended up here. DIRECTION DUSHANBE : Every truck passing by will go to Dushanbe. This is a very long way. Count one day to arrive in Dushanbe. One truck stopped for me in the middle of the town but you have more probability if it's outside of the town. Even better if it is at the bridge before Rushan where there is a military checkpoint, but this is far away. My truck got unfortunately stuck at a military checkpoint further on the road because the President was in Kulob. I stayed there 7 hours and finally hitchhiked a car. Thanks Askidin, M22.

Going back to Rushan/Douchanbe: Go there for 9AM. The first tourists to go back from Jizev will pass at ~10. I waited 50 minutes for the second car to pass, who brought me back to the main road. HITCHHIKING TO JIZEV : in this village, stay in front of shops. There is one here and one before after the bridge. People will try to help you. I got a ride in an old Soviet truck directly to the bridge for Jizev. Try at least to go closer to Bagu, the last village before the beginning of the trail. HITCHHIKING IN THE BARTANG VALLEY/JIZEV : Is it easy? With the help of God, everything is easy ! Once in the intersection to Jizev, it is easy to go to the next village people will bring you there for free, this is what I did and was invited for Plov, kebab and tea by a family. I however waited long time for a direct ride and just accepted to go a bit further which as a great idea. 1h30 passed but I was there for noon so I begin to hitchhike for Zijev around 2.30PM then I waited maybe 45 minutes, villager talked to me I said I was going there and he said this truck (who just stopped when we were talking) is also going, he talked with him and got the ride for free. What I mean is, go to the village, stay in a place (like close to shops where people stop) and they will somehow try to help you find a solution ! Anyways I'm Jizev I was later invited by the locals to drink tea, eat, play music and sleep. I cannot recommend enough going there. Thanks Nourali and Alidot, two M 55~

DIRECTION RUSHAN/DUSHANBE : if you want to go as fast as possible to Dushanbe, stop at the bridge before Rushan where a military checkpoint is located. There, you should be able to find a direct ride to Douchanbe. In a truck it is very long. To leave Khorog, no need to go too far. Several cars will stop for you here. Tried to go to Ishkashim. I waited...4 hours ! I could go faster if I was willing to pay a shared taxi but I miss the first opportunity. I basically walked outside the city, hitchhike with no success for maybe two hours, then came back to the police office and I asked the soldier to find me a car. First he was asking how much and I explained him the project. He found me a car long time after all the way to Bibi Fatima, crazy! And for free! I was in a shared taxe with a whole family but so funny ! Deo gratias. Use iOverlander to see hidden places you can sleep.

Here start the long road to the Wakhan valley. The roads are bad and there is not much hitchhiking opportunities if you're willing to not pay for rides, so expect low progress. DIRECTION KHOROG : Here is very nice spot. It is in front of a supermarket where many trucks stop, as it is the last stop in the city to get food and drinks. That way you can ask if they go to Khorog for free, but it is good to give them something or buy dinner to them. If it does not work well for you you can still sleep in town. There is plenty of room for cars and trucks to stop anyway. Don't waste your energy on city cars, most likely they are just locals that won't go that far, or if they will they will make you pay. Yes, trucks are slow (mine took 15 hours to Khorog) but it is part of the experience and it is lot of fun in my opinion. You can also hitchhike a 4x4 and do the way in 7 hours but it is more uncommon to catch one. It is however so much easier than Sary-Tash and Kara-Kul !

Update September 2026 : there is a police control. It is good place because maybe you can ask the police to find you a ride, and you can wait with them. But it is a long walk to get there and if you are unlucky with hitchhiking you have to go back to the city, except if you wanna pitch the tent. Anyway, IMO closer to the city is good.

DIRECTION DOUSHANBE (end of September) : Kara-Kul is hard spot to stay because it is windy, cold, very low traffic, expensive accommodation and food. It is not the kind of place you want to pitch the tent, except if you have good gear for winter. If the weather is bad you can try to stay here in this Guesthouse, spotting cars coming from Sary-Tash. The day I arrived, maybe 3 cars only came from Sary-Tash to Murghab and they couldn't take us. Interestingly enough, there was more traffic in the opposite direction. Some cars will however stay for the night in guesthouses before leaving for Murghab the day after. Try to talk to these people somehow. In my case we were... 5 hitchhikers in the same spot ! So we decided to pay the guy from the Guesthouse and share the cost (80$ total, very good deal). If it is hardly working for one, imagine for five !

HITCHHIKING ON PAMIR HIGHWAY : 1. Take warm clothes. 2. Accept only a direct ride to Karakul, you don't want to get stuck in the snow. 3. Start early in the morning if you want to be more successful. 4. Consider paying fees for the lifts. In that setting, it is a normal thing. Think that anyway, hitchhiking and paying for the rides will be so cheaper than renting a car or paying a guide. You have to accept you actually need help on that trip, everything is remote and you can't do everything by yourself. Yesterday, late afternoon (3.30PM) I tried for two hours to hitchhike with no success : 3 full cars passed by. I pitched my tent after the bridge and by 7.30 AM I was on the road, prepared to hitchhike when a car stopped for me. It was 3 Kirghiz going to Karakul. I usually ask the price before entering the vehicle, but that day was my last visa day and I was willing to pay just to go out of Kirghizistan so at the end I gave them 30$, which is a good deal IMO.

I made this mistake thinking that a road was going all the way there (thank you Google Maps, idk why I did not use 2GIS). I'm not sure there is one after Ugut and anyway there is no traffic. First of all it is important to remember that God is good. Hitchhiking to Söl-Kuul is completely doable. Was actually really easy for me. You could wait long time because it is mainly private taxis or full cars but will work in the end. Easier for sure if you're alone (in my case, I could not enter the two rides I had if I was with someone else. I woke up at 6AM at Ak-Muz, which is the last village where you can get internet, food, guesthouse. After that place, most cars that go on the way will go to Söl-Kuul. I was walking alone on the main road close to the center when I saw an old UAZ-452. I raised my thumb, he stopped. Thanks Bart, brought me for free 20km from the lake and 10km from base camp. I did again HH and was taken by the 4th car to base camp. As the other user said, try to do your best to be as close as possible to the base camp. There is an easy hiking trail to the lake and this is really stunning place to be. Also don't forget your permit. It should cost you only 30~€ to hitchhike there if you have food, tent and warm clothes.

Direction Tashkent. Lot of cars will ask you for money so make sure it's free. I have hitchhike after the place where everyone else is hitchhiking. To go there I took bus 101 and then a minibus t'as goes there. Just ask the locals in the city. It is a spot where locals hitchhike to Tashkent. If you want to get faster, it is fair to give few euro to drivers. I found a shared private taxi but I felt a bit bad and gave like one euro to the driver at the end.

Direction Samarcand. Good spot don't use a sign "Samarcand". Some people got lucky and got a direct lift for free : good for them. Reality is you will get harassed by lots of taxis and locals to pay for a trip to Samarcand. This is just how people here do. I stop using the sign and got a lift further for free where I got someone directly for Samarcand. Just try to get out of here, this is a station with taxis and public transports where it's just weird to ask for free rides. But it can also work, this is just advice to get faster a direct ride. At the Russian checkpoint, you need a car to cross it. E-VISA DOESN'T WORK HERE (2026). I just asked the first car and they accepted, they were 4 nice people inside ! You need to stay with them until you cross the Kazak checkpoint so be patient. Also, the Russian soldiers were really cool, I was worried about having lost my migration card and got nothing bad.

To go here from Astrakhan, you need to get the bus 109 from the Bus Vokzal (to "Krasnyi Yar" at the right of the train station. I did not really understand where to go out so I just quit the Marshrutka in the middle of Krasnyi Yar then walked maybe 20 minutes. It was nice tho, and doing stop there was quite pleasant. I think here is not a bad spot but try to get a lift to at least Tver or a gas station far from Moscow where you can catch some truck doing long distance. Maybe it's even better to take a train that goes far away from the city to start HH, incredible amount of local traffic. I did the mistake to accept a ride from a actually good guy, Vladimir, but I lost almost 2-3 hours with him because I thought he was going to Saint Petersburg and he invited me, showed me around etc. He dropped me in a empty gas station where most of people again were locals.

Never had such problems with hitchhiking. Looks like perfect spot but there was a big problem with gas so lot of queue. You can think that lot of people will be able to see you and take you further...well no : nobody on 8 hours took me even when I was talking to them. Direction Moscow : plenty of cars but nobody stopped and a lot were full. Voronej ? Nobody stopped. ROSTOV ? Nobody was going there (at least, from what they said). I met another Russian dude that was working there, Nikita, and like me he needed to go to Rostov. We tried so hard and nobody stopped, not even the Mashoutka on the highway and of course internet was not working in that zone so even getting a taxi took us 2 hours. Gas problem was impacting so much the drivers psychology it's insane!!! Anyway, it was interesting experience tho hahaha

This sound like a random place but it's the best to go to Rostov on Don easily. I asked the soldiers to find me a car that goes there and they said ok even though they just found a car going a bit further. So I used a sign and after 15 minutes I found a Gregori, Belarusian truck driver that took me all the way to Rostov-on-Don. I also sleep in the back of his truck xD Deo gratias ! June 2026 : you need a car to go to the customs. Just go to the military outpost where all the cars are waiting, they checked my passport, talked and laugh with me (they love Italians) and the soldiers even took a picture all of us xD They said I need a car and I just asked if they can help me finding one so it was pretty easy. At the customs, read this well : I got down and asked if I can pass, the soldier said I need a car so I got back in the previous one. No one want to pass the customs with a foreigner (especially in Russia) so I know I had to get out at some point. However, the guards called all the passenger to get out of the car and pass by walk, perfect ! I was just asked where I plan to go, my backpack wasn't event checked. Everything very easy but I know it has been not the same for everyone. Kind of weird because today the situation is even more risky than before with drone attacks. Deo Gratias!

June 2026 : no problem at all to get out of Georgia by walk. Guards said nothing, I even asked if I can walk and they said yes. Just pass by the duty free building on the right. Guards will ask if you have a Russian visa. Personally I got a tourist visa back in Paris before starting my trip. You can basically walk the whole way to the Russian side BUT the tunnels are dangerous IMO. There is kind of a sidewalk but it's very narrow and you can fall from it in the total dark so I preferred to hitchhike, a Georgian truck driver took me until after the two tunnels. It's up to you but don't take any risks please 🥺

So the spot is not that bad but only one car stopped in 2 hours and he was not going in that direction. We have been picked up by Tiberiu which is a truck driver, imagine how possible for a car it is to stop for a bit. But nobody did... Got a lift to Tg. Mures, we will see there to go to Cluj. I think it is the best spot in the city and we might have been unlucky BUT I advise to go outside the city maybe and try at the next gas station I think it's reachable by foot

Ride for Timisoara thanks Bogdan. Lot of traffic and slow speed thanks to the roundabout, good room for cars to stop too :) Use a sign, I can tell I had more feedback with than without.

Waited there half hour, pointless. Cars from Bucarest or the periphery. Even going to Ploiesti you won't find a lot of cars going there. Better to take the bus to the airport!! Way easier especially for Ploiesti, can bé lucky for Brašov top. Actually someone was going there but asked for money like often in Romania.

Got a lift to Ploiesti thanks Drago. Way more plate with PH (Ploiesti) and BV (Brasov). IMO better option than the marks before. People care more about you in this case station. Get ready because it's hard to get out of Bucarest lol. We waited +2 hours in the bus station Gara Baneasa.

Good spot but not a lot of room for cars to stop. We tried for 30 mn walking from Costesti but nobody stopped. Good to go to Constanta. We asked to be dropped in Lazu because there is the highway and a gas station to go to Bucarest.

Ok so I guess I was lucky to have a couple of kind italians taking me to Ventimiglia in like 10mn of waiting. BUT I think, if it wasn't them, I could wait a lot. There's almost no room to stop, it's just after the border so there are some cops & carabinieri and it puts a negative atmosephere for hitchhiking which reflects on people attitude. Also a lot of fancy cars and tourism which won't likely be the kind of person taking you for a ride (it's valid for the whole coast of Liguria IMO). Grazie Marco e Sofia :)
