We were stood with a sign for “A8 Nice” which was a dodgy move given the circumstances. Everybody was stopped for lunch, and we absolutely needed somebody who was passing Aix-En-Provence because there’s nowhere to stop before there and you don’t want to be caught in the city, the majority of the trafic is headed on the A7 to Marseille so for there you’d have no troubles at all! Eventually we were approached by this lovely hippy family who gave us a ride up the motorway to another service station on the A8.rating: 3/5, wait: 45 min 🪧, ride: 130 km →

L'endroit est génial pour faire du stop. On peut legalement se placer avant le péage.J'ai fais du stop ici à deux reprises pour deux differentes directions et n'y ai attendu que 5 minutes les deux fois.

Good spot to catch a ride because the highway coming from Toulone and from Aix-en-Provence join in unique one. So respect to the service station before there are more cars passing by.―Anonymous, August 2015

We thought it's a perfect spot cause it's just before the highway, cars go slowly (there's a traffic light and they have to turn) and there's space to stand there. Nevertheless it took us at least 20minutes to find someone to Aix-en-Provence―Anonymous, March 2015

Took me 5 min to get a ride to Aix-en-Provence. Large station where you can get very good food (out of the rubbish).―Anonymous, August 2014

to go down south towards sisteron and further to aix-en-provence and marseille. stand just after the Total gas station, cars arrive slowly and there is space to stop. i guess you can take bus 1 towards serviolan (gap buses are free !) and stop at les terrasses if you don't want to walk.―Anonymous, September 2013

Heading to Nice by myself: I can confirm that there is not humongous space for cars to pull over and yeah cars already get quite fast so there is very short time for drivers to decide. Very few cars stopped but no chance to get someone for my direction. I gave up after 90 minutes and took the bus to Aix-en-Provence which was def the right decision! So my recommendation: Take the bus (5,20 Euros) from the bus station at the Gare St. Charles, hop off at the first station in Aix (the bus stoppes also before the main station there, station called BEAUVALLE) and just walk back a few hundred metres to the entrance of the highway where the bus just came from. There is a round-about just before people enter the highway where there is a good spot for drivers to stop.―Travelrebel, May 2013

We were two girls going to Aix-en-Provence. We waited here less than 5 min and got a ride. However, the place wasn't that good since the cars were already driving quite fast and there weren't that much space to pull off. Over driver told the same thing. In addition, walking and standing on the highway makes this spot a bit dangerous.―Anonymous, March 2013

If you're travelling towards south-eastern France or Italy, the "Aire d'Ambrussum" is a very convenient service area: about 10 km away, near Nmes, there's the turn for the A54 to Arles (and on to Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Nice, etc.).The area is huge, with dozens of trucks and hundreds of cars, so it's a good place to catch a long ride.
It took me 1,5 hours to get a ride (which took me all the way to Savona, Italy) as I tried most of the time to get a car, and most of them where packed with holidaymakers (it was August 1st).

Direction : Marseille, Aix-en-Provence.The spot is before the entrance to the highway A50.
There is enough space for cars to stop. To go there, walk from the city centre for 45min/ 1h. There is also a bus station just near this place.
The spot is after a traffic lights so when the light is red, people in car have time to see you. Use a sign to help.
I got a ride to Aix-en-Provence in 15 minutes.
