Best way to leave montpellier direction north / east. Take the train at Saint Roch direction Nimes, it's only 7 min and no control, end at "Baillargues" and then walk for 10min. You can easly have a lift, did it several times (takes between 15 and 45min) to the closest station ("ambrussum sud") just 15min away and then you're on the highway to paradise ;)

such a pretty rest area, almost didn't want to leave lol
i'd say ~50% go in the direction marseille, 40% in the direction nimes, montpellier and 10% some places inbetween the upcoming highway-split
found a ride in the morning to montpellier quite quickly
also true: great spots to camp and spend the night
not true anymore: dumpster accessability

There was not that much traffic and even if someone was actually going they were usually picking the directions of Montpellier and we were going to Italy's border. Also people seemed to not even look in our direction. But after some time a lovely lady with her elderly mom stopped and they took us to the next gas station on the highway.
Also the guard told us to leave while we were staying right after toll station which was unfortunate as there was a lot of space to park

I believe it's the best place to cross the Montpellier without going into it. There's a lot of traffic in many directions. We've been asking everybody around and many people were going to the next city 60 km away or Lyon, fewer to Aix-en-Provence but it's the best way to Italy and we were heading to it. It's kinda hard to navigate on the map what's the best way to Italy cause there is a lot of roads crossing each other after Montpellier.
We 2 guys got picked up by a father and son from Germany that were supposed to go to Monaco but on our way there the son got so angry he had no cigarettes left that he broke the car (tear out both the mirrors, started to throw things into the car) and told us to leave

Stood there right after the toll station. Cars going to Montpellier might have a problem to stop for you cause they need to cross the way of people on the right. Police came in 15 minutes and told us we need to move before the toll station.
We stood right before the toll station with a sign pointing to people. I believe it's best to just stay on the little brick island between road's lines. Trying to pick someone from roads corner might be trickier cause many people pointing to the right on toll station are going the direction of Spain and we wanted to go Italy. After 20 minutes a nice 20years old solo lady invited us to her car (it was a technogirl speaking no English but loving techno)

We wete two persons and after we missed the bus we hitchhiked to Perols to take the tram from there to move to Montpellier. A friendly woman picked us up and we got the shield from the italian restaurant.

Easy to reach Montpellier from there. You can also cross the highway via a bridge safely. I did it because i came from the other direction and missed the exit to Montpellier aha

A bit harder this time, i waited an hour (average to leave a big city in my opinion) with a sign "Montpellier, Salon". Got a small ride to Aire de Vitrolle (15min away).
I recommend to know exactly your directions since there isn't proper spaces for cars to stop here.

Good place, next to parking, cars going slow and have space to stop. Lot of cars going to Marseille direction or Montpellier. One guy took us (2) from here to toll behind Montpellier, which wasn’t the best idea, because of legality and cars start going there faster. So we jumped the fence and found another place where it was much more safer and comfy. Try to stay on highway if you go long distances and petrol stations as well. Had a sign Montpellier

A lot of traffic going around, but mainly locals, so we (2) made a sign Nîmes, to continue from town to town. There we continued through Montpellier and Perpignan.

Good spot to stop someone who goes to Arles or maybe further. With a sign Arles it was easy. There we continued through Nimes, Montpellier and Perpignan.

Direct way to Arles, but on national road, not highway. Young guy took us to nearest town, where we continued through Arles, Nimes, Montpellier and Perpignan.
