the only Gas station directly on the highway between Rostock and Greifswald.
It serves both directions but there were more people for direction east. I was ther on a work day noon in winter. There was not super much trafic but some cars would still come. Most people were going to Poland or Stralsund. One person would be driving towards schwerin, one person to magdeburg. Few people were going to Rostock and on a ferry to Denmark. Only few people were going west. It took me 4 hours until a person agreed to take me to Lübeck.
So all in all I´d recomend if you wanna go Stralsund or Poland. If you wanna go further west I'd recomend to get out on one of the parking areas on the highway or to hitch somewhere from rostock. this place sucks.

Late afternoon. Lots of people that take the ferry early next morning and are going to spent the night in Lübeck. Eventually got a ride to Fehmarn. Paid the ticket (20euro) and successfully hitch a ride to Kopenhagen on the ferry.

Waited about an hour on a Sunday (11:30-12:30) and got a ride to Lübeck. I was standing at the Exit with a Lübeck sign. I have the feeling it’s not the best spot for Lübeck but good enough.

Got a ride to the rest station on the way to Lübeck at 8am after 15min waiting with a Copenhagen sign. A lot of people are taking the roundabout, stand with a sign.

Not an awesome spots on early morning. Not a busy place around 8 or 8:30am. Don't wait with a sign, just go and ask people. A nice elder-surfer-rocker with long white hair and beard took me to Lübeck after asking him !

11AM-1250PM on a Friday in August 2023. Tried to get to the ferry on Fehmarn.

More Danes and Swedes than I could talk to. even two Norwegians. But 50-80% have either children in the back or are literally full with baggage. It seems so great with so many Scandinavians, but the baggage situation reduces the relevant options dramatically.
Dutchies also present. Some traffic to Schwerin. Germans always say they're about to switch highways or get off at the next option, local traffic. Sooo many cars with bicycles and camping trailers. The frequency of cars arriving was very high. Obvs a good rest stop.

I got a ride with a family going to Burg on Fehmarn after 110 minutes, from there there's a bus to the ferry, either X85 or 591.

Hard to say whether to recommend this spot for the Fehmarn ferry. Had mixed results as a German asking Danish, some insisted theyd've taken me if the car wasn't full, others were not open at all.

For strategy, keep in mind that people continuing on A1 can drop you off 10min from Lübeck train station. As of July 2023, there is a bus (X85) hourly from Lübeck to Puttgarden. so car rides to train stations in between are acceptable maybe, like Haffkrug, Großenbrode, Oldenburg, Fehmarn Burg.

BAD plan to get there to cross. I almost did it with the truck on the side. But i dont think any car will stop in front of the ferry gate, there are focus on something else, and probably thinking about extra fee. If you want to cross here, the best Wat is probably to find a car more in the inerland. Like a gasstation in Lübeck would be perfect, there you can target danish plate until you find one that cross on the ferry.
Otherwise it's 20 euros to cross as a pedestrian

I was going south to Germany. It was already dark and thumbing did not work, trucks were going directly to the car park. As it was raining, I sneaked past the ramp, luckily there were no guards watching me. Then I was going from truck to truck asking drivers who were going to the ticket booth to pay. The most lovely Belarusian truck driver took me to Lübeck. Good spot, but can be risky if the guards see you.

Was dropped off here in the middle of the night, had a ride on its way to take us to Hamburg but while waiting a guy came up and asked us where we were going and gave us a lift all the way to Lübeck.

I waited for a car in the petrol station two times, both with my girlfriend. First one in November of 2012 to go to Hamburg, we waited one hour. Second one in August of 2015, to go to Lübeck (but with a sign for Lübeck or Hamburg). It also took one hour

Most drivers are taking the A24 towards Berlin or want to enter Hamburg. It is not easy to find people that are heading for Lübeck or want to take the A20

Used this place around 10-15 times for Berlin (average waiting time: 10min, notwithstanding day and time; even at night it works fantastically!), and one time to Lübeck (took me some 30min, even on a Friday afternoon!)

Very good spot to Berlin & Lübeck (way to Copenhagen)
I waited 15' to go to Berlin and less than 5 to get a car to CPH !

Try to talk to everybody in the ferry, because after getting land, cars just won't stop !!! The drivers who took me in Copenhagen told me it was better to stop there as they were going to Oldenburg. I guess if it's possible, don't get drop after the ferry because there are some rush and then nothing and most cars won't stop again. Plus, I was there in the evening, I tried for one hour. Then I decided I'll spend the night in the trainstation. It isn't the worst place for an overnight : it's covered, warm, you can hide, there is a train at 5am going to Lübeck. And it's a nice place to meet some frustrated HH :D

I used a sign with "Lübeck/DK". After just 3 minutes I got a ride to "Raststätte Neustädter Bucht". Good spot, cars can stop both on the right and left side of the road, so you don't miss a lane.

Very good place. There was even a stable hitchhiking sign to Berlin and Lübeck :)

Got there by nightfall. So I tried my luck for a while but finally decided to pitch up my tent at a field near the station. Well rested and showered at the service station I got a ride close to Lübeck. Lots of traffic up north. Look for foreign number plates such as Sweden, Denmark and Norway if you wanna got there.
