11AM-1250PM on a Friday in August 2023. Tried to get to the ferry on Fehmarn.More Danes and Swedes than I could talk to. even two Norwegians. But 50-80% have either children in the back or are literally full with baggage. It seems so great with so many Scandinavians, but the baggage situation reduces the relevant options dramatically.
Dutchies also present. Some traffic to Schwerin. Germans always say they're about to switch highways or get off at the next option, local traffic. Sooo many cars with bicycles and camping trailers. The frequency of cars arriving was very high. Obvs a good rest stop.
I got a ride with a family going to Burg on Fehmarn after 110 minutes, from there there's a bus to the ferry, either X85 or 591.
Hard to say whether to recommend this spot for the Fehmarn ferry. Had mixed results as a German asking Danish, some insisted theyd've taken me if the car wasn't full, others were not open at all.
For strategy, keep in mind that people continuing on A1 can drop you off 10min from Lübeck train station. As of July 2023, there is a bus (X85) hourly from Lübeck to Puttgarden. so car rides to train stations in between are acceptable maybe, like Haffkrug, Großenbrode, Oldenburg, Fehmarn Burg.

June 2018:Direction Hamburg/wherever that's not Denmark:
Try to get a ride before you enter the ferry from Rødby. It's a rush of cars each time the ferry arrives, but absolutely no opportunity for them to stop except the last cars, unless it's a nearly empty ferry.
We just gave up, got a ride from the camping place to Oldenburg in Holstein the next morning but that was just sheer luck.
It was also 3 other hitchhikers stuck with us. At least the weather was nice.
Puttgarden also don't have a grocery store, but the ferry terminal got a soup vending machine, so I strongly recommended bringing your own packed lunch if you plan on getting stuck here.

If you want to travel in the direction of Oldenburg/Leer, just go to the crossing B322 where the cars have to turn left to get on the autobahn. I waited less than 10 minutes there. The Shell and McDonalds are really senseless, mostly local people there and some travelling in the direction of Hannover. (tried 1 hour there...)―Anonymous, January 2015

Try to talk to everybody in the ferry, because after getting land, cars just won't stop !!! The drivers who took me in Copenhagen told me it was better to stop there as they were going to Oldenburg. I guess if it's possible, don't get drop after the ferry because there are some rush and then nothing and most cars won't stop again. Plus, I was there in the evening, I tried for one hour. Then I decided I'll spend the night in the trainstation. It isn't the worst place for an overnight : it's covered, warm, you can hide, there is a train at 5am going to Lübeck. And it's a nice place to meet some frustrated HH :D―Couleurmate, August 2014

Many parking lots where cars can stop, slow traffic because there's still a speed limit of 50. Good to get in direction of Oldenburg/Meppen/B401.―Anonymous, July 2014

Autohof Apen-Remels. Lots of locals. There is a big truck parking and a restaurant.
In case you can't get away at all, there is also busses going towards Leer/Groningen and Oldenburg/Bremen who stop here.

We got a ride (direction Oldenburg) here very quickly (5 minutes or so), but since it's a bit dangerous place to stop for drivers, and most drivers don't go directly to Bremen, be prepared to be dropped of at a bad point (we got stuck at a rastplatz for 2 hours)rating: 3/5
