Took a series of rides to get from here to the Turkish border, worked well. However, I strongly recommend against taking the bus to Analipsi as others have said; I would recommend to take the 83 bus from Thessaloniki, and then there is a stop that is right next to the highway. From there, I would say just climb up onto the highway and stick your thumb out, then get a ride to this gas station/rest stop. The second bus (91A) to Analipsi does not run very often and will require you to go much further north than the highway, when you can just stop and get out right next to the highway instead.

No luck. Sign with Thessaloniki. Ended up taking the bus at 20:00 for 22,70€ after a long day in the sun

Lots of room to stop in the emergency lane, but 2 different police cars pulled over and told me off for standing on the highway, but eventually I got taken all the way to Thessaloniki. Just hope no police come past.

To go back from Mount Athos to Thessaloniki, just make some friends during your pilgrimage/trip. A lot of people come from there and will go back by car. Thanks George and Theodoris!

There is space on the shoulder for a car to stop if they really want to. But the cars are fast and the trucks probably can’t stop and I got super lucky, a guy stopped and started backing up on the shoulder to pick me up. You have to jump a fence to get here. I cannot recommend hitchiking out of Thessaloniki it is extremely difficult in all directions

We (couple) got lucky to quickly catch a ride on a highway on Friday at 5PM directly to Thessaloniki by a Greek driver, worth trying

There is barely any traffic around these exits and entries. On the highway people won't stop because there is no space to do so. I walked to the gas station a little bit north and luckily found a trucker willing to take me in the direction of Thessaloniki.

Great spot for hitching north from Thessaloniki. There are traffic lights so the cars are really slow there. We were 2 guys and had a sign North Macedonia.

Tough one if going towards Macedonia. After 5min had a ride offer to Thessaloniki, unfortunately declined, just to wait almost 4 hours (started 5:55 AM) for the next car to stop that went along the ring road of Thessaloniki, where there was a better spot towards Macedonia. Some tourists, but very low traffic in the early morning hours. Great sleep on the restaurant sofas though.

Was trying to hitchhike to Thessaloniki. Quite many cars, part of them heading in the direction of Thessaloniki. But during the 6h there none stopped to pick me up. One stopped to offer water, but was not going my way.

I second that it is very difficult to get greek people to stop for you. we ended up asking people at customs and finally getting a ride to thessaloniki (by an albanian). not sure what my advice is, it will be difficult, also seems pretty impossible to hitchhike from the highways as there is literally almost no traffic the whole way. might actually be best to stand directly on the highway. from thessaloniki to turkey we ended getting a bus
