We (couple) got lucky to quickly catch a ride on a highway on Friday at 5PM directly to Thessaloniki by a Greek driver, worth trying

There is barely any traffic around these exits and entries. On the highway people won't stop because there is no space to do so. I walked to the gas station a little bit north and luckily found a trucker willing to take me in the direction of Thessaloniki.

Great spot for hitching north from Thessaloniki. There are traffic lights so the cars are really slow there. We were 2 guys and had a sign North Macedonia.

Tough one if going towards Macedonia. After 5min had a ride offer to Thessaloniki, unfortunately declined, just to wait almost 4 hours (started 5:55 AM) for the next car to stop that went along the ring road of Thessaloniki, where there was a better spot towards Macedonia. Some tourists, but very low traffic in the early morning hours. Great sleep on the restaurant sofas though.

Not much traffic, but got a truck that drove to Thessaloniki within the hour.

Was trying to hitchhike to Thessaloniki. Quite many cars, part of them heading in the direction of Thessaloniki. But during the 6h there none stopped to pick me up. One stopped to offer water, but was not going my way.

I second that it is very difficult to get greek people to stop for you. we ended up asking people at customs and finally getting a ride to thessaloniki (by an albanian). not sure what my advice is, it will be difficult, also seems pretty impossible to hitchhike from the highways as there is literally almost no traffic the whole way. might actually be best to stand directly on the highway. from thessaloniki to turkey we ended getting a bus

I think durring season IT IS a good place but the people there hesitate to Pick you Up. We waitet around 1 and a half hours Till we got picked Up by an Albanien Guy directly to Thessaloniki

We used a sign with "Serres" as a Destination. Got picked up by a friendly Family after 15min and dropped of Close to the Highway going to our real Destination Thessaloniki

The spot is great (great visibility and place to stop), but I ended up waiting for quite some time to find a ride to Thessaloniki. When asking around, I even talked with a man my age who said he was going to Thessaloniki, but "refused to take strangers into [his] car because of all the problems with imigrants". Funnily enough, I was picked up by an Albanian who emigrated to Greece a few minutes later.

Didnt have a sign & spot isbt too easy to reach (takes 2 hours) from thessaloniki center. Still, worked. Lots of slow traffic

The easiest and quickest spot to go to Thessaloniki. The police at the borders and the people at the bar will tell you to take a taxi for the first town, don’t listen to them and put your thumb up, you’ll get a ride before noticing

We started from here to go to Thessaloniki but we wrote Blagoevgrad on our sign and someone took after waiting some time

One of the best spot to go to Thessaloniki from Athens. Got a ride in 15minutes but it is illegal to hitchhike there

-----2024---- I tried to hitchhike from here, there's an area where cars can stop, but not many people stop. After 3 hours, a car finally stopped on the motorway to let me in; I strongly recommend taking a train out of Thessaloniki.

200 meters after the border, I got the ride to Thessaloniki by a Turkish truck driver

best way to go to Turkey, ask the Turkish truck driver. It may be complicated to get there from Thessaloniki city centre, you need to take the bus to Analipsi and from there walk to this rest station in about 20 mins

Finally! Took about 2 hours and 3 different spots, but here we got a ride to Platamon. Best to walk here instead of the gas station if going direction Thessaloniki, because about half cars turn right here and go to villages, so you avoid those and only get the ones going far.

Waited for about 40 mins until a very friendly guy stopped and helped me go to Thessaloniki!
