Stood here for a good 6 hours trying to get a lift to Zagreb. We weren't offered a single ride (even after dropping our sign), until we finally got one all the day.
The driver (a local from Budapest who apparently often drives from Budapest to Zagreb) said it's probably not a good spot for people wanting to go to Croatia.

All the car traffic from the border goes through here. People drive very slowly and there is lots of space for them to stop. Got picked up by a Turkish family on vacation and they took us all the way to Belgrad. They even wanted us to go with them to Budapest the next day but we were cramped for time.

Pretty good spot, but not so many cars on Wednesday afternoon. Was staying for an hour near the gas station, with the Budapest/Györ sign, two guys approached me, and suggested to take me to Györ for 50€!!! After an hour I decided to start approaching myself. In half an hour found a really nice truck driver who took me to Bratislava. Overall okay spot

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from Budapest to Arad in Romania (successful).
It looks like a very good spot. I was waiting at the end of the last grass island (by the very exit there wasn't enough space to stop) hitchhiking sometimes with a right hand and sometitimes with a left one. Occasionally with both so I looked like Jesus 😁
There is no shade. The toilets are free.
After 25 minutes Romanian lorry drivers picked me up and took to Arad.

A very good spot. I was waiting only 5 minuys and I got a lift to the last petrol station before Seged from two women and a young girl.
I was waiting at the exit of the petrol station hitchhiking with a right hand cars leaving the station and with a left one those driving along the ramp joining highway. So sometimes I looked like Jesus 😁
There is no shade. The toilet and internet are free at the station.

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from Budapest to Arad in Romania (successful).
A very good spot. At the very end of the petrol station there is little space, so I was waiting a bit closer, at the end of the last grass island, hitchhiking once with a right another time with a left hand. And sometimes with both, and then I looked like Jesus 😁
No shade, quite busy traffic, both cars and lorries. There is free internet, but the toilets are paid.
After 15 minutes a lorry took me to another petrol station 55 kms along the highway. There were some road works so it took as nearly 1,5 hours 🙄

A very good spot. Legal coz it not a highway yet. Others already described this spot. I only add that place is a bit uphill so lorry drivers may not be keen on stopping here. A 100 meters closer to the center there is a flat and long exit from the petrol station, but it's after a curve so visibility is limited. The choice is yours.
No shade, cars coming in waves due to the traffic lights a bit before.
After 15 minutes I got a ride to a petrol station 27 kms along the highway, from where quickly I got another lift.
The couple even forced a chocolate bar on me 😊

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from Brno to Budapest (successful).
It looks like a really good place. At the end of the petrol station. Enough space for cars and lorries to stop. No shade (luckly it was a bit windy that day).
I got dropped here by a previous driver a bit before midday and after 25 minutes a Serbian lorry driver heading home picked me up and dropped on the outskirts of Budapest.
Due to road works on the highway it took us over 3,5 hours to reach the outskirts of Budapest. It looks the construction will last for quite some time.

One male 40+, with a sigh "BRATISLAVA", one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from Brno to Budapest (successful).
It looks like a good place. The entrance to the pertol station, with loads of space (enough for 2-3 lorries). After the traffic lights, so people drive slowly, and can see you easily.
There are also downsides. It's before the big junction, and cars go everywhere, to Prage, Viena, Bratislava, Ostrava (and Poland) and also locally. So, I'd say that a sign is necessary here. The traffic is constant, so you'll not have time to rest your arm. In the morning no shade.
After 25 minutes a woman stopped, but she was going only locally (she didn't see my sigh).
After one hour I started loosing my hope a bit. I gave myself 0,5 h more before moving to another spot. 5 minuts before the deadline a man stopped and took me to Bratislava. He said that he saw my sign, so I recommend having one here.
The driver was kind enough to drop me at a petrol station south of Bratislava, where quickly I got a ride to Budapest.

There wasnt so much traffic when we were here (monday afternoon). We asked around trying to get to Budapest, luckily a kind gentleman from Netherlands offered to take us all the way to Barcs, south Hungary, which was nice as we were trying to get south eventually anyway.

It isnt so bad. I understand, that trying to get a ride to Vienna or Budapest from here might be quite a hard task. However, it was just fine for hitching out of Bratislava. We used sign Jarovce which worked great and got us to the OMV petrol station in Jarovce (on D2, southbound).

I mean its all right. We got a ride to Bratislava after 10 minutes but I think we were very lucky, most of the traffic is austrian taxis, few cars from Slovakia but I wouldnt try getting a ride to Budapest or Hungary for that matter, almost no hungarian cars.

Caught a ride to Budapest, with a sign saying WIEN. Also tried stopping cars with a thumb up briefly, some drivers reacted. Good spot for hitchhiking, lots of traffic, also u have a place to hide in the shadow.

We got lucky and found very friendly young Hungarian guy after going close to cars with sign. Good spot for both highway directions (Budapest and Romania), from what I know most trucks go to Romania by this road. There is water + toilet and shade from trees.
