After about 5-10 minutes, I noticed a sign behind me. I can't read Italian, but I assumed it said somehting about being fined for parking in the bus lane. So I left, deciding to try the parking lot of the grocery store. When walking to the parking lot, this gentleman and his girlfriend offered me a ride to the train station to get into Milan (my final destination). I found it difficult to refuse Italians, so I condede! They bought me some snacks in the store, which was incredibly generous! Additionally, another gentlemen who I had jokingly hailed on a bicycle told me he was heading to Milan in a few hours and that I would be welcome to hitch with him then. So two offers in 10 minutes!

Originally I tried to hitch from the petrol station just down the road from this bus stop. However, early hours in the morning, it was absolutely empty (although the first guy offered to give me a ride, but going down the wrong direction). Tried to take the bus to the on-ramp of the autobahn, but while waiting for the bus I managed to hitch a ride. Got incredibly lucky, went all the way down to near Milan!rating: 4/5, wait: 10 min 🪧, ride: 472 km ↓

The spot is good but there are lots of people going to Nicea. It's really the best spot to get a ride to Italy or to the east because there aren't really any other spots that are closer to the border.Do not settle for a ride to Nicea or Monaco if you want to get to Italy because there arent any more stations on the highway later on until Italy.
We didn't see much succes on the gas station itself but we got a ride to Milan with a trucker from the parking. There are lots of trucks going far.
The service is very nice and you can power your phones and other devices in many places in the station. There is also a lot of space with tables and chairs on the outside to cook and eat.
If u dont manage to get a ride until the sunset, there is a good place to sleep behind the station by the revolving door in the bushes. It's hidden from the bigger road but seen from the smaller road on which there are almost no cars. To get there you have to get around an old fence. No need for a tent because there are almost no mosquitos. The station closes at 2 am and opens at 3am so when we asked they told us we can sleep on the couch or somewhere in the inside of a station but u would have to leave at 2am and wait an hour and u can come back at 3am.

I asked my ride to leave me here on my way from Milan to Brescia since I didn't want to enter Bergamo. I was surprised to see that many cars were passing through this gas station even on a Sunday night.Eventually got picked up all the way to Brescia relatively quickly.
P.S. On this Autogrill I came upon a couple of foreign backpackers that were headed to Venezia. They were standing with a sign on the entrance to the gas station, which didn't bring them much success since I found actually asking the drivers in simple Italian way more profitable.

So this is the spot №1 from the "how to get out of Milan" guide. At least that's how I got here. The instructions were mostly clear and intuitive, though some things have already changed since the article was written. As such, for some reason the metro train wasn't going all the way to Cologno Nord station. Rather it stops at Cascina Gobba and from there you have to take a bus to the desired metro station. The ride was about 20 min long and I didn't even pay for it.When I got to Cologno Nord I followed the instructions and walked for about half a mile in the northeast direction until I saw the big electricity pole. To get to it, I had to jump over a 2 meter wide trench (it's more convinient if you cross it at the car gate to your right). Then I had to make a jump over a yet another trench, this time just below the electricity pole. Though I found the doors to be closed with padlocks so I had to jump over the fence from where you can just casually walk downhill to the gas station.
Advice: watch out for the stingy bushes, wouldn't recommend going this way if you're wearing just shorts and a t-shirt (you're likely to scratch yourself badly due to the dense vegetation that stands in your way).
After I got to the station I got picked up pretty quickly. The driver gave me a lift all the way to Bergamo from where I went with another car to my destined city of Brescia.

Great spot if you want to get to Venice or in direction of Slovakia/Austria. Likewise for Milan, Trident.Incredibly bad spot if you want to get to Bologna and further - we had to spend the night. In terms of sleeping: I recommend going through a gate and turning left, there’s some bush - we set up a tent and spent a night there without any problem, and we used the toilet at the gas station during the morning. Station’s staff was nice and they didn’t cause any problem.
But if you’re going to Bologna etc, I recommend catching any hike in direction of Milano / Padua and getting into the next autogrill (gas station) between Venice and Padua - Ristop |Arino Ovest. Amazing spot to catch a long ride and it’s not that far!

I did this in December 2015, and it's perfectly doable AS LONG AS you're very determined. Refer to this link to see the path I used: http://1drv.ms/1PxI6eu When Via Capoliveri ends, go straight into the bushes. You should be able to see a very narrow trail, that splits up almost immediately. If you go right, it's a dead end, so go left and just follow the trail. The bushes are dangerously thorny, so make sure your clothing is appropriate. When you reach the highway, turn left and walk down the road (behind the guardrail). The path will get steeper and narrower (you might fall and roll down the hill into the highway if it's slippery), so go back into the trees (circled in blue). The trees are pretty thick, but still, you can work your way until you reach a metal fence that's been obviously climbed over a thousand times before. Go for it and you're on the bridge. Cross the bridge and then it's really easy to reach the gas station. Nothing dangerous to report about that part.It took me 15 mins to find a direct ride to Milan!

It is a very tricky spot because depend on where you have to go,you will find many people that doesn't go in your direction. From here you can go east through Piacenza, North to Milan and north West to Turin and Suisse.―Anonymous, August 2015

There is a toll station where cars go either in the direction of Milan or Torino.I tried for two hours to catch a car in the direction of Torino but without success.
End the end I walked to the near motorway service area, but it was quite dangerous and I can't recommend it.

Waited 2 hours early evening for a lift to Milan (returning skier from the alps). In that time 4 different police cars stopped, one informed us that we shouldn't be hitching from there but left us alone, the rest just ignored us. Whilst the police were there most drivers ignored us. Very friendly petrol staff though who asked friendly truck drivers if they could take us.―JoeMclo, March 2015
