We were trying to go towards Savona, after a while a police car showed up and fined us.
Some people stopped to take us to Torino though, so if you're going there this might be a good spot.

Small station, not a lot of cars stop here.
I was lucky to get pretty fast ride to Savona from here.

Not a really good place because all of the cars can’t see you and it’s quite dangerous to stand somewhere closer to them. We get a ride in an hour. Our direction was Imperia/Savona.

In 40 minutes, 3 cars stopped. We wanted to go straight to Nice, or they had only one place, so we didn't accept but it is a good spot to go to the south if you want to reach Savona / Nice.

Good spot to go to France, but step by step and not directly.
I asked to people who stopped at the gas station if they went to Savona or Imperia, I just had to wait 15 minutes.
I was then taken to a gas station inside the highway and immediately found a car to Marseille.

it's a perfect spot unless there is polizia stradale controlling traffic. in that case it's hopeless, since people fear it a lot. and bastards robed me of 7 hours waiting there. when they were gone i got a ride to imperia with a sign saying "sv" (savona) in 15 minutes.

In fact you were in the direction of Savona. To go to Piacenza, it's the A21 one !

For me this was a good spot to go to France as there was a lot of traffic (we've been waiting for 30 minutes). But you're still in Italy, so make sure that the city on your sign isn't that far (Imperia or Savona). It's a good spot to get on the highway and as you'll know, once you're their the sky is the limit.

Heading to SAVONA. After waiting 1,5h at the Reststop of the A4 before this turnoff I got bored and I wanted to try this toll station, somebody had told me about. I walked behind the guardrail along the highway - don't do this, dangerous! I had to cross a bridge that had a low traffic 3 lane highway beneath me. I couldn't walk on the inside, no emercency lane/shoulder. So I held onto the fence from the outside and walked on a 30cm wide path. In the middle of the bridge on of the flagstones was loose and tilted, a few crumbs fell down, no cars underneath - yet very scary. I made it safely to the toll station and had a sign SAVONA - a bit too small. After 10 min a car stopped but since they didn't go south and couldn't take me to the next southbound gas station I let them go. After a total of 25 min the police showed up and was super friendly with trying to speak english :) They said it was too dangerous for me to stand there so they took me to a bus stop to go to the city and take the train to Savona.
So as a car had stopped, if you can get there and have a sign probably not too bad. Just don't walk along the highway.

Came here from Direction Milano on my way to SAVONA. I hoped someone would take me to the gas station on the southbound highway A6, but with only 1,5h of patience on a Thursday afternoon I didn't get lucky. Somebody said there's a toll station one km from here, so I started walking behind the guardrail along the highway direction Savona. Not such a good idea - dangerous! Best idea if you end up here is probably to hitch into the city and try to get close to the beginning of A6 direction Savona.

I was dropped here on the way into Genova, but I easily crossed to the other side by carefully walking one carriage to the next right by the toll bridge.

The area where I've place the mark is huge and there's plenty of space for any car or even truck to slow down and stop.

It's very convenient for anyone going west to Savona/Ventimiglia/France or north towards Milano.

If you're travelling towards south-eastern France or Italy, the "Aire d'Ambrussum" is a very convenient service area: about 10 km away, near Nmes, there's the turn for the A54 to Arles (and on to Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Nice, etc.).

The area is huge, with dozens of trucks and hundreds of cars, so it's a good place to catch a long ride.

It took me 1,5 hours to get a ride (which took me all the way to Savona, Italy) as I tried most of the time to get a car, and most of them where packed with holidaymakers (it was August 1st).

For heading west there is a gas station here that is open 24 hours. Zoom in and check out the satellite view. Directly north of the station there is the entrance to the highway that catches traffic coming through the station as well as from the main road. Just stand at this point with a sign for Varazze or Savona and get off at any big service station along the way. If you are downtown, to get to the gas station get on bus no 1 and just say to the driver "Autostrade Genova Ovest" or hand him a note. I had poor luck after 6pm (which is why the 24 hours station was handy) but caught a ride quickly in the morning. Don't make a sign for too far west or the locals will think you're crazy. Baby steps. Good luck!
