At the traffic lights now a good spot to the north (Eindhoven) and east (Heerlen). There is now enough free space besides the road to ask the drivers for a ride. The traffic lights stay red for about 45 seconds.Spot will be gone in 2016 (tunnel).

Caught a ride to Heerlen in about 15 minutes here, but that distance might have been a bit lucky,I also got a ride to Krefeld (A77, Germany) here in about 20 minutes, so the place seems to be fine for both directions.

Hitchhiked several times to get to The Netherlands from here. Usually rides less than an hour to get a ride (mostly to southern Limburg (Maastricht/Heerlen), but sometimes also towards Venlo).―Maxim1110, November 2014

For direction to Aachen the locals from Heerlen will more likely take this road than the highway so we tried even if it looks like there is not enough space but there was and we got a ride pretty fast! For Maastricht try the other spot on next to the gas station.―Thejourneyramino, August 2014

At the traffic lights you can ask for rides towards Sittard or Heerlen. To Liege from here is senseless.

Easiest way to get to Maastricht is to find a driver going to Belgium or Eindhoven over the A76 in the Netherlands, then get out at A76 exit Geleen and hitch with sign Maastricht. To get to Maastricht you can also find here any driver going to Heerlen-Eindhoven-Antwerpen, after crossing the border let the driver take the exit N281. Parallel road, the N281 has an exit Maastricht (with a petrol station at the beginning of the A79!). Then driver goes on on N281 towards his destination. This costs driver about 5 minutes extra driving time.

Hitchhiked from here about a week ago. The fuel station doesn't help you as everyone stopping there will go towards Eindhoven. The spot is good for thumb-hitchhiking towards Weert, Roermond, Maastricht and Heerlen. This spot is not advised if you want to go to Belgium/Heerlen, then you should search for a spot on the Aalsterweg, which is west of this road, or if you can find a way to go there, to the fuel station on the side of the highway A67 between Eindhoven and Eersel.―Stormhond, July 2013

UPDATE JULY 2013 !Estimated VERY good spot towards Eindhoven, (Utrecht), Heerlen and Venlo, (Nijmegen).
BEST SPOT!
Crossing N2 with Professor Cobbenhagenstraat/Voltastraat.
At this crossing there is an exit lane for the road works traffic. Here drivers can stop very easily. The whole flow of north-south traffic passes by.
The spot exists since around 30 June 2013 (and can disappear in half a year).
