Direction Coimbra. I was not going there (to Lisbon instead) however a young Spanish couple in a van stopped on that lane to offer me help, despite i was waiting on the lane to the highway. They were driving the very first vehicle who passed by and after i declined, no one else stopped. And no one really drove through my lane, so i walked back to Abrantes direction national road till a man picked me up for some km.

I was going to Lisbon and came here from Castelo Branco northern district by Linha Azul bus (1€). You should drop off before this road intersection, you'll have to walk back longer otherwise.
I waited on the western side of this previously pinned point, facing Schreiber (look at the map).
After 20 minutes a spanish expat living in Coimbra picked me up. He's one of the many drivers avoiding the nearby highway. He dropped me near Vila Velha de Rodao where the road to Coimbra begins northwards. It was hard to leave that mentioned place, as no car enters the highway to Lisbon. So if you're here in Castelo Branco, make sure your driver doesn't take you to a village. Or choose a highway entrance.

This is a good spot for patient hitchhikers who get rides city by city and not to their destination. I came here on the way from Chaves to Coimbra by bus 51, paid 1,55€. Buses 5 and 31 are also coming and do stop closer. Good traffic, most of them are workers going to other small towns, one offered me a 15km ride but had me refusing when he warned me very low traffic is leaving that village, so I should wait here for a longer ride.
After a hour I opted for a Rede Expresso bus to Coimbra for 10€ through the app.

Very good spot to continue the hitchhike to south. A water spring is available. Drivers smiled, 2 cars stopped within 40-50 minutes and the second one dropped me in Vila Real.
However, if you are going to Viseu/Coimbra, don't drop off on the western side of Vila Real where the bus station is, or you'll need a city bus to A24 entrance (5/31/51, cost 1,55€). Also if you wanna continue to Porto or the west, that highway entrance in Vila Real city centre looks steep and uncomfortable to wait at, so you'd better check the map for a better continuation.

Here might be good northward as well.

Very good spot to leave Chaves towards south, you should come here by bus to Boticas and ask the driver to drop you at Autopista before Casas Novas (i departed from Boticas at 7:30am and he made an extra stop for me).
You should wait on the short lane where cars have just turned left and had time to see you. Most of drivers smiled. After 40 minutes a man in a modern pick-up took me to Vila Pouca de Aguiar and offered me 15€, this has been the first time within European continent :D
İn Vila Pouca, drop off at city centre highway entrance, easy to continue. Water spring available.
İn Vila Real, don't drop off at city centre entrance, or you'll need a city bus (5/31/51) from nearby bus station to continue towards Viseu and Coimbra.

Nice spot. Heavy traffic means a lot of people pass you, but we were picked up decently quick and taken to a gas station at Aveiras de Cima, probably wouldn't recommend accepting any shorter rides if going to Coimbra or further north.

Hey :) my goal was to leave Coimbra to Aveiro. After 1h30 waiting in Casa do Sal with a sign I didn't have luck and I decided to walk for 40 min to the next point. I waited in this gas station (Galp), asking people if they were going in Aveiro' direction.
After 50 min I got a ride to Aveiro from a very nice man :)

Hitched a ride from Arganil to here. No shade while waiting and quite dead around lunchtime on a monday, but eventually caught a ride to Coimbra from there. Lots of space to stop though.

Arrived here 15.12.2017. Fences are quite okay they fixed the hole where with a hitchhiking sticker on. Agree with all the above there were only local traffic, and some language barrier sometimes.
Asked around people a while and eventually gave up and stood with the sign. 1 hour later got an offer from a German lady to Coimbra and from there got a direct ride to Lisbon easily.

It's not the best nor the worst spot, average, and does worth a try. Once you got out this spot it should be better in my opinion. Low traffic on a Friday afternoon as well.

saturday afternoon, to people, 15 minutes to coimbra. i think it's a good place because people pass by and aren't that fast, thus those who want to stop will do it. and the gas station has traffic all the time :)

Just at the town limits. Enough space to stop a car. Got a ride all the way to Coimbra from here.

Just next to the famous cafe, O Afonso, the fist car that passed gave us a ride to Coimbra.

A small gas station on the way to Coimbra. Not a lot of traffic, but since the road out of Montemor didn't look very good, we decided to try our luck here and the first driver asked gave us a ride to our destination, Tentugal.

Direction Condeixa/Coimbra. After traffic lights, lot of space for a car to stop. I tried this spot, so close from the town because it was the closest one from where I stayed, but there should be some place closer to the center.

Another try there, 2 h to get a ride. My boyfriend and I were going direction Coimbra, another hitchhiker we met on the station - to Santiago de Compostela. The two of us managed to find a ride from a driver going to Braga, who also agreed to take the other hitchhiker. Speak, speak, speak with the drivers, be as polite as you can, they might not be very familiar with the idea of hitchhiking, but when addressed personally in the right way they are very friendly in majority of the cases.

Heading to the south with a friend, we thumbed here about 1 hour until a family (driving in a convoy) stopped and took us until a service station near Coimbra. There wasn't a big traffic, and most people I asked were heading to some villages/smalltowns nearby. Still, best option to leave Porto.
