So... It's 2025 and we tried to hitchhike to Algeciras. This is the place where you usually get a ferry ticket. First we tried to enter the "export access" for trucks which is very close by but even a guy who works there told us that the driver needs the name of the passenger on his ticket so we didn't try more. Later we heard around 3 a few busses would arrive and maybe those we could have asked but in the end we just decided to not wait 3h and bought a ticket. I would have loved to try it somehow but my wife was lazy :D. Good luck for anyone who will try nowadays. I would love to know if someone will manage it!rating: 2/5, ride: 34 km ↑

Not much shade, seems to be a bad spot to go longer distances as this is the route into the city, but still managed to get a ride out of Algeciras with sign and thumb. Cars slow down after roundabout which is good for visibility.rating: 3/5, wait: 70 min 🪧

Firstly we tried to hitchhike on the A7, in the bus stop, it seemed impossible so we started walking to this roundabout and we instantly got picked up. It was a good idea because people from San Roque leave the city here. Travelled to Algeciras. (our sign said Tarifa i guess)rating: 3/5, wait: 30 min 🪧, ride: 16 km ↙

many cars passing, a bit sketchy to stop but got quite lucky. Maybe you will find a much used plastic sign to Gibraltar/ Algeciras on the ground :) (Oktober 2023)rating: 4/5, wait: 20 min 🪧, ride: 108 km ↘

first i was standing next to the mall on the roundabout that is also marked on this map but i couldn't get a lift for a 1 hour i think.... then i asked the first campervan on this parking and got a ride from a nice people to Algeciras! so i think at this spot it's good to mix it together, parkings and roundabout+ gas stationrating: 4/5, wait: 10 min 💬, ride: 179 km ↓

a bit sketchy, but best spot to go to Algeciras from this road. any further there is no room to stop, and couple roundabouts earlier nobody stops, I spent an hour standing, before deciding to come here. the other comment probably got the location wrong.rating: 4/5, wait: 15 min, ride: 102 km ↘

I was hitchhiking towards Algeciras. Good spot but probably they will drop you in Malaga, so be careful and ask the driver (in case you want to keep south) to drop you in a petrol station.―Anonymous, July 2016

FERRY LIFT: alright, this is the place where you wanna go if you're looking for a free lift on the ferry. Coming from Tangier, if you get dropped at the passenger terminal roundabout, don't go left, cause that's the passenger terminal and you don't need to do anything there, don't go right where you see the truck sign cause that's just a parking lot I guess, GO STRAIGHT, where it seems like you shouldn't go, but that's where you want to go, walk a couple of kms, you'll get to the place where trucks are scanned before boarding (on the right hand side). There you'll find all the trucks waiting, start asking all the drivers for a lift to Algeciras, remind them they are allowed to take one more passenger on the truck for free, the port staff is friendly, won't give you any trouble. It took us just 15 minutes to find a ride for me and my girlfriend, it was a three drivers turkish company, they were happy to take us with them.
Alright, second step, getting your passport stamped, that's the hard part, before entering the scanning area, you need to pass through this toil boot-looking gates, where you'll need to go to the customs office on the left and get your passport stamped. there may be different officers, the one that was on shift got us into tight jams, he didn't want to stamp our passports, we told him we were trying to hitch hike a ride because we didn't have any money, and that what we were doing was totally legal, he said he didn't have the permission to do it, and told us to go to the main police office at the passenger terminal (that's a long walk), if it happened to you, DEMAND him to call his chief and INSIST ON IT, otherwise you'll have to go all the way back to the terminal. After half an hour we finally got our passports stamped and green light to go.
Third step, long wait for the truck to be scanned, and for the drivers to get all their papers, took us HOURS. Finally we could leave and go to the embarkation place, but be aware that tourists cars have the priority on boarding, so trucks will have to wait till there's room left on one of the ferries.
At the end of the day, it took us just 15 minutes to find a ride but 7 hours before touching spanish land (the ferry is just one hour).
NB: trucks pay several hundreds of euros for the ferry (12 hundred my truck), so hitchhikers being passengers usually get one free meal on board.

Well... I stood here for 2 hours. No luck. Cars are going too fast. Eventually some nice woman approached me and offered to buy me bus tickets to Algeciras.―Rytis9, May 2015

Works well also for the direction Jerez/Cadiz/Algeciras. If you're going to Algeciras, it's recommended to find a direct ride here rather than taking a shorter ride along the highway towards Algeciras.―Ewelinalucy, April 2015

directly at the campsite El Sur. You can ask people from there or you stand at the highway as I did with a sign direc. Algeciras. Much parking space―Anonymous, May 2013

I arrived at this petrol station, sat down to eat some lunch and make a sign, and a guy walked up to me whilst I was looking at my map and gave me a lift directly to the front doors of the ferry port in Algeciras, without me even having to actively do anything. Easiest hitchhiking experience ever!―Anonymous, February 2013
