Bad spot. Although there is a lot of trafic everyone stayed in Cartagena. Several people came up to us to tell that hitchhiking is not common in Spain and advised to take the bus. After 3 hours we gave in and this nice lady brought us to the train station. I think it's possible to find a ride to Murcia but we were too hungover to be persistent.

Quite a good spot to get to cartagena. Drivers can stop on this roundabout at the exit to this fenced off area. Loads of traffic and after a 20 min the first Spanish person to ever take me brought us to cartagena. Shoutout to him for repairing my trust in the spanish

We tried to get to cartagena from here. Not that much trafic and most people stay in the neighbourhood. After 30 min a guy took us to a better roundabout a little closer to cartagena

A small gas station with not a lot of traffic and many people don't go far. Nonetheless, there are some tourists on this route and we (2) ended up finding a ride within 30 minutes or so to Murcia (could have gone further to Cartagena and continued the next day with them to Málaga).
In the end we decided to visit Málaga and take a BlaBlaCar from there.
The A7 is challenging to hitch-hike, because there are very very few service stations. If there are any, they are often off the highway. Had we not found a ride straight to Murcia, I think we might have been stuck there.
However, if you want to go further (Granada, Málaga), try to find a ride that takes you at least to Granada. This will be hard to find, but probably worth it.

If you can get there, it is a truck-drivers resting area, ideal spot for hitchhiking. They all go to Medellin or to Cartagena in the other way, they drive super slow, you have a lot of space and you can go ask directly to drivers having a break. The exact point is behind "Restaurant La Patrona, Planeta Rica, cordoba" on maps.
Took me 10mn to get a ride to Medellin.

Road toward Cartagena. There is a toll, we waited one hour. If you are offered for a ride to Sincelejo, be carefull, we got stuck for many hours there. We ended up taking a bus to Toluviejo (2 dollars) and from there we got a ride to Cartagena.

Setting: two guys, one Latin looking, the other one obvious foreigner

On our way to Cartagena we had a really lucky shot here. After standing here for about an hour, seeing ourselves already stepping back to the centre of the village where buses are leaving towards north there was suddenly one of this big container trucks stopping for us. The driver assinged us to sit behind the container in the very back. One of the most amazing rides I ever had! The driver told us that in case that the police would stop us he had claimed that we would have jumped illegally on the back and he wouldn't know about us. So we feared every time when the police was standing at the verge of the road but seriously, they've seen us more than three times, a police car overtook us, military motorbikes passed by and no one was interesed in the fact that we sat there enjoying the panorama and the feeling of freedom. Thanks to the unknown driver for this great adventure!

Setting: We were two guys going to Cartagena. One guy looked Latin like, another one obvious foreigner.

Now: This is the place where the 2nd peaje (toll collect station) is where all the cars and trucks are passing. Don't try to walk there as it is mentioned in the description of Medellin, it would take you hours! Take a bus from the final metro stop Niquia to there and tell them to drop you off at this place. There is also a Esso gas station just after that. We found it general pretty hard to get a ride and we only found someone by talking to him while filling up. Hitchhiking in Colombia is not really fun I think. We didn't make very far and had to take a bus later. This is always a good option when you get stuck somewhere as they stop wherever you stand. So you need definitely time and patience.

Toll north of Medellin, to get there take the Metro de Medellin and get off at the last station called Niquuia, then take a bus to the toll, I did it in 2008 with good results, did not reach my final destination was Cartagena but forward enough and I left another good place to hitchhike.
