Motorway service station, not possible to walk to/from.

Not too trafficed on a Sunday morning in January 2023. Extremely nice staff at the café gave me a coffee for free and said I could just go inside if I needed to warm up.

Unfortunately Netflix launched a documentary about a hitchhiker and axmurderer right before I went on a hitchhiking trip, so a lot of people in England said they were to scared to pick me up.

Two middle-aged women wasn't going my direction but bought me a sandwich.

Eventually some guys from Romania going to Leeds picked me up and dropped me off at the station outside Newark-On-Trent.

Unfortunately neither of us was completely familiar with the left driving and I was headed towards Lincoln, so I ended up in an inconvenient spot and ended up finding a car into Newark-On-Trent from there, but that was mainly my fault.

Waited for around an hour before getting a lift to Leeds on the M1 North. Slow cars, decent amount of traffic and space to stop.

10 minutes direct ride to leeds... seems little bit dodgy.. maybe dangerous and difficult to get there.. good luck.

Got a lift in ~1 hour down to Leeds on a Tuesday morning (0900 - 1000). Had camped at the North end of the car park previous night.

Lay-by on way into Leeds. Got a lift in 30 seconds (someone who had just stopped to add some oil)

Hitched into Leeds - Got a lift in 30 seconds from here, makes it hard to judge if it was a good spot or if I was just lucky!

Exit from roundabout, which leeds the direction to Germany. You will meet a lot a of people going only CZ and showing you thumb down, but if you are lucky, you can get to Svata Katerina, (which is the biggest petrol station + Mc Donalds on D5 before Germany) or even further to Germany. We got a car after 30 mins to Svata Katerina.

I just hitched this August 8th North to Leeds and I agree most people were going to London but others were going to Northampton and things like that, so it was okay to get to a better service station. Bloody far to walk with a backpack from Edgware tube though. Staples Corner better I agree.

Depends where you're trying to get to

Avoid if you're trying to get North of Manchester! - go back to Sandbach and then up.
Ok for getting lifts into Manchester, sometimes liverpool or toward Leeds.

this service station seems to be highly frequented by other hitchhikers. there is a huge sation on the side which leeds to the west and you will be able to find a lift in direction dortmund within a few minutes to the west, this is almost excellent). a bit more difficult is to find someone who changes to motorway to the a7 to the north. and even more difficult to find someone heading to the south from here. there is a small service area on the other side on the motorway which enables you to find a lift in direction east (berlin) too
