Great gateway-spot. I waited 15 min and a woman took me to the gas station up the hill in her Jaguar. From there I quickly found a ride to London (could've gone to Luton if I wanted)

Medium petrol station, decent spot to get out of London. I got a lorry to Swindon early morning.

A relatively good starting spot since it's easy to reach with the overground from London proper. However not too many cars stop at the gas station and they are not stopping for a thumb. I did find a ride that was able to take me at least a bit further on the highway in the direction of Dover for higher chances to find someone to take me further.
This was around 10 am in mid August.

Busy gas station with lots of traffic from the UK. Found someone to take me on the ferry and straight to London from here. This was in mid August around 4 pm.

We spent a long time in the gas station speaking with people, but everyone was going to London, so when it stopped raining we crossed the road and got a car to Luton.
The M&S crew is lovely and can help you

Staples corner: good spot for going north up the M1. Used this as a starting point for a London - Lake District trip. Short wait with sign 'North' + thumb, standing just before the mechanics that drivers can pull into before getting on the motorway.

Very busy, asked around in the Service Station for a while and then stood at the exit with a sign. Got a ride just South of London after less than an hour

Seemed like an awesome spot to get a ride across the channel. First car with a UK licence plate i asked agreed to take me with them on the euro train and half way to london. They have to add you on their ticket, but they can do that on their phone on the app where they have their ticket.

I live in London and have used this spot a few times, in fact it's where I started my first-ever hitchhiking trip. Never had to wait more than 20 mins with an "M20" sign (I've always been here around 9-11am). This is the ideal spot to start hitchhiking towards Dover/Europe in my opinion!

The spot is not the best, but the cars can pull on the side to the island with the pedestrian crossing. I was hitchhiking to Central London with a sign "London A40" people stop there at the traffic lights so they have enough time to see you. All traffic goes in the direction of Central London. So pretty good, 4/5 because for hitchhiker it's not the top spot but there is no better at this place. It's safe when you stay on the island on the road.

Hitchhiking with sign "London M40", the traffic is pretty fast, but I think it's the best spot to get to London, most of the traffic goes that direction. Got 2 cars at once asking me if I wanna go.. wasn't all the way to Central London but was quite close

Scored a ride very quickly with a sign for Maidstone. Ended up helping a couple workers deliver sofas in London for a few hours before getting where I wanted to go, good fun and great spot. Just smile and look friendly as us English are sceptical.

I stood infant of the entrance to the petrol station. A truck stopped me on the road and took me closer to Gent. I reached London the same day.

Direction M11 / London Stansted Airport

High visibility, a lot of cars (a sign saying "North" or "M11" is still very useful).
