Still a very good spot. Caught a ride to Manchester at 2am after about an hour's wait after I had already caught a ride here at 9pm -- unfortunately the truck driver gave me bad info on where he was going, fortunately he passed by here again three hours later to bring me back...

I've used this spot twice, both on a Saturday morning. You can very easily catch a ride to Burtonwood services from here, or all the way to Liverpool or Manchester. Recommend a sign saying M62, and either Liverpool or Manchester, but if you're going to Manchester and get offered a right to Burtonwood services take it, you can get to Manchester quite easily from there.

How do you get stuck for 27 hours? Anyway, I got a ride in about 5 minutes going around, asking drivers in the dark. The guy asked me to show him my ID, but took me almost home in Manchester.

For some reason or other the Midlands have some of the worst services in the country. The Spaghetti junction you shouldn't use, because you will never get a lift. If your heading towards manchester, try to get a train or bus to Stafford, and hitch from there, the next few service areas Northbound are horrific for rides Northbound, you could end up in one of these old fashioned services for over 24 hours...train / bus stafford, believe me, it will take the strain of hitch hiking off you, north stafford and you wont have problems going north,

I waited at the entrance of the gas station shell and waited less than 3 minutes to get a ride ! There is a lot of traffic, especially to Manchester (whre i was going to) and people go to get some gas before driving. A very good place !

I managed to get a lift yesterday from the first person I asked all the way up to nearly Manchester

I waited somewhere on this road to go South to Bristol and it works well. There is a lot of trafic and it's the best place to go to Manchester or South !

I waited here to go to Manchester and I didn't waited that long (I don't remember exactly ^^)
But this is quite a good place to go north !

We got a ride to Manchester within a couple of minutes. We may have been lucky though, as it doesn't look like a typical good spot.

Not always good for Manchester here - we tried once with sign 'MANCHESTER' for 2 hours without success. Walking to J19 and hitching from there got much better results.

Have used this place multiple times and never got a ride in less than 45mins. On one occasion it took over 3 hours. However, I've always got a ride, and there's not many other options in Manchester. If you do decide to try this spot, any ride going vaguely in the direction you need will probably result in you finding a better spot than this one, so it's often worth taking the chance on any ride offer from here. Getting to M6 J19, or M6 Knutsford Services from here is definitely worth it.

We waited about 45 mins., holding a sign "Aberdeen". Many people just shook their heads, saying "no", many pointed at us and laughed as if we were animals in a zoo. Only one guy stopped, but he told us he's for Manchester.

Good spot to go northbound.
Someone took me from there to Manchester.
I had extraordinary luck there, got picked up literally the moment I walked out of the station.

Slip road onto the A1 - good area for cars to safely pull over, and a lot of people driving long distances south. My longest wait here has been 45 minutes, but they took me all the way to Manchester, so be patient and you'll do fine. You can get the 21 bus here, get off at the Eighton Lodge stop then walk around the roundabout and along the grassy verge to get onto the slip road. I've gotten lifts with and without, but a sign really seems to help here, and have hitched with success from this spot as a pair and by myself with no problems.

Frankley Service Station.

You can get there by taking Bus #22 getting off at final destination. Then you have to walk the road further on, to the motorway. There is a bridge so you have access to both southern and northern directions.

EDIT:
From this spot I already hitched to Scotland, Cornwall and Wales. You can even get to the Northeast from here by following the M6 to Manchester and then turning eastwards.

Good spot for going to Liverpool or Manchester (except when there's a football crowd), but you'll be hard pressed finding anything going further south.

Good spot for getting a ride south. If you've come from Manchester but your ride only goes to somewhere in Cheshire, then ask them to leave you here.

Took us a long, long time to get to Edinburgh from here, but a lot of people seem to be going to Manchester. Another upside is that you can cross the motorway from here. Also, you can easily camp just behind the bushed on the west side.

Depends where you're trying to get to

Avoid if you're trying to get North of Manchester! - go back to Sandbach and then up.
Ok for getting lifts into Manchester, sometimes liverpool or toward Leeds.
