Not too many cars at 6pm but I got lucky. Not sure if it's better here or at the big roundabout on the border before the tunnel. Trying in the city was a waste of time as 90% of the cars were just heading up to this gas station and then turning back to France.rating: 3/5, wait: 20 min 👍, ride: 15 km ←

Hitched to la messana with the first car - a guy that went to Arinsal. Cars don’t go so fast and can stop at the bus station.Good visibility if there are not a lot of cars parking before the bus stop. In my case there was one.
There’s only the issue that they don’t have much room to stop. There’s a a marked bus stop but that’s it.

I was sat sipping a coffee after my first menu du jour since leaving Spain, glancing at maps and figuring out how best to get to Toulouse that day, where I intended to stay with a friend. Annoyingly for me, it seemed the best spot to leave Ax was the place I was dropped off at in the first place. Fantastic. The cool Andorran air was well gone at this point, especially since lunch had carried me into the hottest part of the day, so the walk to the spot felt like a real slog.
Upon arrival, a second thing hit me, this spot is great…for the other direction! Going north you have a big open car park with more than enough space to pull over. On the south side…a grassy ditch. Oh well, we roll with it!
This is a spot where a sign would be beneficial, much to my lack of forward planning. I wanted to make the most of the steady stream of traffic leaving Andorra, but the problem is they're headed all over the country! (a quick glance at the number plates will show you the true appeal of cheap cigarettes and alcohol.)
Eventually, I was picked up by a very nice man in a very nice car with air conditioning that felt like heaven. He wasn't going straight to Toulouse, but to Béziers instead, meaning he would turn off of the motorway before any service stations came up. Much to my chagrin, I agreed to be dropped off at the Peage just past Pamiers. He was kind enough to give me a marker and some cardboard, though, to make leaving Pamiers just that little bit easier; for which I am incredibly grateful!

This is a surprisingly nice spot for something before the border. An open road with ample space to pull into the roadside car park. Lots of French traffic too since a lot of people go to El Pas De La Casa to for cigarettes and alcohol, then turn round and go home. The bus here from Andorra la Vella is deceptively long, and surprisingly more expensive than the other routes; so in my case, getting here from La Massana was a proper headache. Andorra's public transport really is nothing to write home about!
After a short walk and a talk with a very confused supermarket security guard, I was picked up by a mother and daughter from Ukraine, who took me to L'Hospitalet. Sadly, I never got their names…

A good spot… but a bad spot.I waited for over two hours in the direct sunlight in a heatwave for a ride to Andorra. In the end, a fisherman gave me a ride to the border, where I proceeded to walk through.
After waiting for an hour on the other side to no avail, I decided to go on foot. The blistering sun suddenly changed into a powerful rainstorm, the same storm the next day would go on to completely flood Andorra la Vella. Look what we've done to our environment.
I waited out the worst of the rain in the roadside McDonald's on the outskirts of Sant Julia; this would prove redundant, as soon as I started walking, the rains returned and soaked me through to my skin. In the end I took a bus, and got a bed in a cheap, albeit empty, hostel in La Massana. The next morning, fearing the return of the rain, I got straight on the bus to El Pas De La Casa and the French border with a Belorussian family on holiday.
Andorra was certainly gorgeous, and cheap, but definitely a place to come with a car. It would also help to be better prepared for hiking than someone who has just come from the Valencian interior in a heatwave, and who doesn't even have proper shoes.

My heart wasn't really in this one. It was late enough to know I wasn't going to reach Andorra by nightfall, but I thought I'd give it a quick go before heading into the little restaurant for dinner, and setting up camp for the night. The spot is a big straight road with excellent visibility, featuring a big, long gravel car park that goes straight up to the road with no barriers, so it's incredibly easy to pull over.
I set a fifteen-minute timer, that's all I wanted to wait. Lo and behold, as soon as my timer rang, a car pulled over. I was picked up by Martina, an older lady who was apparently a DJ back in the 90s, and now organises country music camper van meetups in the Pyrenees!
She took me to La Seu D'Urgell; in retrospect, I shouldn't have taken this ride. I should have camped, as the only accommodation still open in town by the time we got there was way over what I was hoping to pay, for a truly awful, filthy room.
Oh, well… you live and learn.

I was feeling tired at the end of a long day on the road, and this spot was exactly what I needed! It was getting late, I arrived around 19:20, but the cool mountain air gave me a new boost of energy to push for Andorra before nightfall. This turned into one of my favourite hitchhiking spots of all time. Thanks to an incredibly lucky combination of attributes, you get to thumb a busy road, and a busy supermarket car park exit at the same time, all with ample space to do it.
In the end, I got a ride from Maria, a Spanish lady picking up supermarket sushi to take home to her husband. She left me at a roadside restaurant, which would be a lovely place to camp…

After an all too brief visit to Barcelona, I decided to begin my journey north, back towards my home. The original plan was to follow the coast, but being right in the middle of one of Spain's worst heatwaves in years, I decided north to Andorra would be a wiser (and prettier) option. I took the train with a Greek girl I met to Montserrat, where she promised a cable car, a very scenic train, and a monastery, how could I say no! After arriving, she told me she was staying that night in the monastery, and I decided to accompany her to help translate since she didn't speak any Spanish. This lead to a fantastic lunch with the monks and priests amongst the Dia De San Joan celebrations!Upon leaving, the bridge seemed like the most logical place to try to stop traffic. However, after an hour of shouted remarks from the patrons of the café across the road, and plenty of middle fingers from passing cars, my patience was starting to ware thin… After a quick beer to recharge, a refill of my water bottle, and another half hour wait, I got a lift from a very loud Spanish man up the motorway a little ways. Despite my pleas to drop me at a service station, he insisted in dropping me in his terrible hometown, Sallent…
If you choose to hitch from here, I'd still say the bridge is the best option going, and the train to the monastery is probably one of the most scenic options for getting out of Barcelona. However for your own sanity, definitely do not leave the motorway, get yourself dropped at a service station!

This is a tricky spot for andorra.I’ve been here at the evening and slept here and at the morning got a hike almost to andorra.
I’ve talked a few hours with the staff, this is my reconnoissance findings:
Multiple cars a day are Andorrans going straight to andorra. Mainly in the morning 9-14.
Spaniards also go here to Andorra.
If you’ll be patient, you’ll find a hike to Andorra. It’s also easy to go to manresa, but if you go to andorra you shouldn’t waste this place.
There’s woods right in front you can sleep there.
The staff at the gas station are super useful. If you see Oscar tell him Yuval sends hello!

This is usually empty. Especially in weekend (so does the staff says).I had luck with an exceptionally nice man who took me to a great CESPA gas station located on the c16 which has traffic that goes to Andorra.
If you’re headed to Andorra and found a hitch to Manresa you’d better ask the driver to stop in the gas station I described - area de servicio monserat.
There’s usually multiple cars a day going straight to Andorra. (Especially after 9-10)

This is maybe the best gas station in the area. It’s open 24h and has a (great) restaurant. It is super known and frequented by trucks. There’s also a fair amount of tourists that do 100km+ rides. The trucks literally stand in line for you.
A lot of trucks go to valencia.
People do go to Gandia from here, also trucks, but you’ll need to search for it.
I haven’t been to the other side of the highway but it seems identical for those going west.
Eventually a couple from Andorra (approached!!) to pick me up to valencia.

Perfect spot to andorra. Huge service station for cars and trucks. We were two (M and F), and it took us 5 min to get a direct ride to andorra. Also, I think you can directly ask to people, but we were too lazy to live the shade, so we just waited at the exit of the parking with a sign

Its a little bit difficult to reach this place, I take the metro B and in "Ramonville" I start walking in this direction. I saw one spot first, in the roundabout, but didnt like it, so i continue walking next to the road (its seems "dangerous" but is not). When ir reach the Peage, I ask there and they told me to wait on the right. I was with a sign to "Andorra" but if you go to Andorra you can try to use a sign to "foix" (The girls who catch me up didnt know where it was Andorra, they just stop and ask me). I wait for 45 minutes, lot of cars going, the peage make them stop a little bit. Good luck!rating: 4/5, wait: 45 min
