I had a ride straight through, but seems like a good spot. Don't carry anything illegal. Police were nice but searched my bags for drugs, even asking questions about vitamins and over-the-counter meds.rating: 5/5

First tried to hitchhike north from here at 1pm, and failed utterly - gave up after three or four hours in the freezing wind, trying various spots in the immediate area. Came back next morning at about 11am and got a ride all the way to Puerto San Julian where I had a couchsurfer waiting for me. I recommending standing west of the highway interchange, as cars are emerging from it. Under the bridge some of the cars will be going slower, but the ones coming from town are in the wrong lane and the ones coming from the bypass are distracted by having to merge onto the highway. Whether you're going north or west, consider accepting a ride to the "Güer Aike" (pronounced "Where I K" police checkpoint about 25km west of here, which is before the split and the police are reportedly helpful.rating: 3/5, wait: 20 min 👍, ride: 348 km ↗

This is not the actual location of the border posts - the Chilean control is several kilometers west, and the Argentine one is about 15km east. I didn't actually hitchhike here (my ride from Rio Grande took me all the way through), but the border officials on both sides have no problem with you telling them you're hitchhiking. As of 2025 there's theoretically a hotel near each border post, in case you get stranded and have money.rating: 4/5

You'll want to get to this place if you're hitchhiking to Rio Gallegos or Punta Arenas without approaching drivers at fuel stations. But be aware that there is no fuel station here, and it's a bit of a walk to any shelter. Stand where cars are coming out of the "rotunda" (roundabout) headed northwest. I failed to get a ride here in the late afternoon, but then succeeded the next morning (with snow coming down hard - maybe I got some pity points). Ride was headed all the way to Gallegos, and even offered to take me as far as Caleta Olivia the next day. Also tried a couple kilometers up the road at the Mision Silesiana, where there's also a good place to pull over, but it seemed like most cars were going too fast.If you're hitchhiking in the winter without cold-weather camping gear, be very wary about taking rides that aren't going all the way to your destination - the route is mostly uninhabited except for scattered cattle ranches and border posts, and you could get stranded overnight in some lethally cold, shelterless areas (potentially including the junction where traffic splits going either to Rio Gallegos or Punta Arenas).

If you travel by approaching drivers at fuel stations, this is the place. If you're using only thumbs on the roadside and trying to go north (as I was), stand across the "circunvalacion" (bypass road) from the fuel station, where traffic from both southwest and northeast is funneled into the northward route. This was where I got the most reactions (and eventually a ride), even with the sun at my back. And if you're not using the fuel station to approach drivers, consider accepting a ride that just goes to the rotunda (roundabout) at the north end of town. If you're trying to get to Rio Gallegos, start in the morning - I spent a whole afternoon here and was only able to get to the other side of town. Most drivers start early because it's a long drive, especially in the winter when daylight is short and road conditions can be bad.rating: 3/5, wait: 100 min 👍, ride: 10 km ↑

Got a late afternoon ride to Rio Grande in the winter in about half an hour, thumb only. I think I stood about 100 meters north of where the dot is, where the wide street meets the highway from the northwest, though the ride came from the highway itself.rating: 4/5, wait: 30 min 👍, ride: 108 km ↖

We were two Backpacker going to direction SanJuan and Salta. The intersection is great spot and wide place to stop for cars. We got ride aroud 35 km to Lavalle. ( We realized there is a bus is going here Number 300 ,who want to get a bit far from citycan consider this option)There is a Police check point in This town which cars stop too.
We might say hitchiking is tough in Argentina and takes long times, drivers most of time does not seems friendly.

Route 14 - Buenos AiresWe were two and as we failed we decided to split and after that we find ride in 30-60 minute.
Be insist with your tumb to truck drivers.
If you are lucky you can find a ride to Capital but most of cars split after Zarate so if you stuck in Zarate intersection ask people for 194 Bus station which is 3500 Pesos.
As we experience waiting long time is common in Argentine.

Good place, most traffic to argentina passes by here. End of season time is longer as traffic is reduced. The day you see the pinguins you can sleep at the camp, and go in the morning hitchhike.―Victor-c, March 2015

All directions, either south to Santiago, north to La Serena or east towards Mendoza in Argentina. Emergency lane at the entrance to the motorway. You can get nearby by micros (mini buses) from Valparaiso or Via del Mar. Ask for the ones going to Quilpue as they all pass near Jumbo Hipermarket in Via. Get off near Puente Lusitania, cross the bridge and turn east. Another option is metro to the station Chorillos (electronic card needed, no single tickets).―Anonymous, October 2013

CEASA: There's a train (CPTM - ESMERALDA LINE) that takes you here easily. You have to take the YELLOW LINE of the METRO and then do the combination. Get down in CEASA station. (In every station you can ask for a map of lines). Here is not the best option for those who want a fast ride. Take your time, be amazed with this huge (HUGE!!) space full of truckers, fruits, greens, fish, and lots of other foods and talk with EVERYONE. When I say everyone, i mean EVERYONE (not only truckers). Say them where you want to go, ask if they know where people who go that way, usually park their vehicles or in which tent inside CEASA they have their lunch. People who works here knows lots of people, and if they like you, chances are HIGHER for you to find a trucker going to RIO, CURITIBA, PORTO ALEGRE, CHILE, PARAGUAY, ARGENTINA, MANAUS, PORTO VELHO. EVERYWHERE! Truckers here can go everywhere!!!When I tryed to hitch a ride from here, I was looking for Rio de Janeiro, I couldn't find anyone going there in that day (only in the next one) but I received offers of truckers who were going to LOTS of other places.
