Update as of March 2026 The guy is still here and he'll probably be for a while as I believe he's the manager. I got here in early afternoon - he wasn't here at first. I stood next to the entrance and started chatting with the drivers, as I do most of the time. He arrived after a couple of hours and straight told me to leave his property. I didn't even have time to speak to him before he assumed I was refusing. He went to his car to drop what he had in his hands, and came back aggressively towards me. I had already put my backpack on, but he grabbed my other bag and started to push me. Even when I was on the road, he yelled at me to go further. I was honestly really shocked by what happened. It started to get late in the afternoon, and I couldn't get to talk with the truckies anymore, so I hitched back to Broome. That's the craziest thing that happened during my whole trip around WA and I was feeling really bad after it. Don't stop here, this guy is mad and the biggest asshole I've ever seen - you won't be able to talk with him. That's ridiculous but you've got to go on the side of the road.

It's honestly a pretty dodgy spot. No shade, no water, no traffic, and it can get really hot. The parking bay down the road is desert and useless if you want to stay on the highway. BUT I had the best luck and finally got a lift all the way to Broome.

Not much traffic. I wouldn't recommend accepting any lift that wouldn't drive you at least to Port Hedland (ie. someone taking the turn to Newman).

If going east, I think this is much better than the other intersection. Although no shade or water, but if you come early you should be fine.

As another review says, it is mining country - people don't really care about your adventure. Most cars here are going west. I tried going to the truck parking at 5.30 am but didn't get lucky. You might want to go see the drivers even earlier. You can camp and take a free shower at the service station. Finally got a lift to the next intersection by another backpacker camping here.

Karratha is not far. Got a ride immediately by a worker - they were doing some renovation work at the roadhouse. There might not be anymore in the near future.

Waited a whole afternoon and 3 hours next morning. Just in front of the BP, talking with the drivers. There is shade, some kind of bench, and the staff was kind in filling my bottle with cold water. I bush camped next to the truckstop. 9 cars/trucks out of ten were going south, some even all the way to Perth. So you'll be fine if that's your direction. Finally accepted a ride to Nanutarra Roadhouse. I'm sure if you come during the dry season it would be a great spot.

It is honestly a pretty bad spot. The service station is permanently closed (don't believe Google Maps) so almost nobody stops. Cars go really fast, and going north they can't see you well. No shade. Bore water at the public toilets. Got lucky with a lift all the way to Carnarvon.

Maybe I got bad luck, but it was harder than expected to get a lift from Kalbarri to get back to the highway. I waited a whole afternoon and finally I cheated and posted a message on the local Facebook group. The next morning a guy going to Geraldton drove me.

Wasn't easy to get out of Perth by hitchhiking. You can get here by train + bus + walking. You can also camp in the bush next to the substation and start early. Cars go fast and not much space to pull off. The traffic light down the road is not in your favour. I also tried walking further up the road but it wasn't good either. I reckon here is the best spot as there is a turning lane to the strawberry farm where cars can stop if they want to. Got a short lift just to get me out of here.

A quick ride to the center, fantastic way to save money compared to a taxi

September 2022, 11:00 a.m. It took extreme long - 6 hours, but then a long ride to Alice Springs in a giant truck

Most drivers wouldn't look at me, or would just smile and go, the truck driver that gave me a ride told me that hitchhiking is not that common - he only took me because he was used to hitchhiking from Australia

Heading out to cross the Nullarbor, this BP station is strategically the best spot to look for a lift. Unfortunately, the roadhouse owner is one of the biggest pricks one can meet in Australia and will promptly kick you off the property (and then yell at you for an additional 5 minutes). It's best to avoid the property itself and stand adjacent to it, or you may get the cops called on you. Should the owner decide to bother you anyhow, there's no use reasoning with him, so just tell him to lick a camel's ass. Anyone planning to cross the Nullarbor should also note that the Ceduna IGA is the last reasonably priced grocery store that you will find for a long, long time, so stock up.

If heading westward, do yourself a favor and turn down the ride offer to Penong. The same traffic will be passing through Ceduna, where there is a grocery, relatively inexpensive (for rural Australia, anyway) bottle shop, and a nice beach. Penong has none of these things, and both the petrol station and general store are very expensive. (The flies are horrible and there's hardly any shade, either.) If you are stuck here, camping spots aren't hard to find, and the pub is a friendly place to relax after a day of hitchhiking failure.

This is the port Augusta "Train station". Catch road trains to Darwin and Perth, or the other way to Sydney, Adelaide, etc. If going North or West, don't settle for anything less than a ride all the way to where you are going. Good luck. This spot is excellent, compared with elsewhere in Australia.

Seriously couldn't find a better hitching spot that this in australia. Anyone would get a lift in less than 5 mins. Anywhere on this road is good, but especially on the bit near the BP petrol station. Traffic will be going either North (towards brisbane) or West (to Lismore)
