Traffic to the highway goes slow or onto the road here and can see you. They have to stop in the road tho so have your things ready. Luchi the legend drove us to the border and bought us a whole table of food<3 2 males

People are afraid ro take strangers. Most people juts ignore you. Asking at the gas station is also not helpful because they were unfriendly .However, I got a ride by a nice man in the end

Good spot, alright traffic towards the Turkish Border, Police wont mind you if they pass, (they just looked at me weird)

This interchange looks like a nightmare, but if you are heading to Plovdiv it’s possible to get to this disused bus stop by walking across the bridge and cutting across a couple lanes of traffic. I recommend a sign saying “1 km” because if you get anyone to take you to the Rompetrol down the road there will be many more cars. I waited here a long time but it was bad luck, it’s a good spot with space to pull over and cars going relatively slow

Not the best spot to hitch, we got pretty lucky with an amazing driver. I would recommend hitching closer to the border

I hitched a truck to the border immediately. Just be aware that hitching at the border checkpoint is a pain in the ass.

Maybe I just got unlucky, but I stood here for more than an hour. For the first 50 minutes, I stood here with a sign SRB. After that, I switched to Dragoman and got a ride to a gas station there in half an hour. I would say a lot of local traffic. The traffic light is 30 sec green, 30 sec red.

I think this is an awesome spot. If you have the energy to ask, there are a lot of people stopping here for a quick bite, if not, just thumbing with a sign worked pretty decently for me. I really cool dude stopped for me and brought me all the way to Sofia. The cars are slow, and there is a place to stop easily.

The first guy I asked brought me all the way to Obnova on his way to Montana. Looks like a decent gas station with nice traffic. With a bit of luck, you can find a ride here all the way to Sofia.

A decent spot for directions to Pleven and Sofia. I found a car in a while. The staff was really friendly and cool with me asking around the gas pumps.

good spot before A1 enter to Sofia sign, one man gave me a ride, wanted to continue to highway to Serbia, he thought he knows a better spot but left me on a very very wrong place on the other side of Sofia city

Good Spot, only one road leading south through the Mountains, we (M22 and M20) had a sign for bulgaria and got a Ride after 30min to Ramnicu, probably better to put „Bukarest“ on the sign, enough Space for cars to stop

Wonderful Spot, especially for going to Brasov, two people stopped when we (M22 and M20) had our thumbs out within 10minutes around 1pm on a friday. With our sign „bulgaria“ we got a Ride for a few Kilometers south :)

Solo female. Asked around for Skopje but many cars were going to Bulgaria or were full (with kids/pets/grandparents). Maybe because it was a Sunday during the summer But idk if there's another spot near Niš that could be easier, since there's no gas stations on the southbound highway until almost Vranje Eventually found a big truck who dropped me off just outside of Skopje because he had to stay on the Ring Road highway

Tried to hitchhike at night. 9pm (the sun had set) in August. A truck driver took me to Pirot. Nice but there are no gas station on the highway between Nis and Pirot so then I had to spend the night there (completely doable). At night I’d advise on pushing farther than Pirot if going to Bulgaria. Ps : gas station accessible on foot from the city, you have to climb a fence coming from the west.

Good spot to get to Nis. I was going to Bulgaria so it wasn’t really adequate. Some random woman came up to me when I was packing to bring me to the other side of town. Thanks to her!

Good spot to get a ride, but if you want to go to the E80 (for Bulgaria) make sure you don't go to Çorlu from here.

A fair number of cars coming through and a spot near the end of the onramp for cars to pull off but a car just stopped right in the middle of the road for me. He was going to one of the last towns along the coast in Bulgaria so I had him drop me at the gas station spot just before the road going south.

This is the exact spot I used to get out of Istanbul towards Bulgaria, there isn’t much room to stop, but drivers merge onto the highway slowly, and theres a steady flow of cars

Got dropped off here by a local saying I could walk to Greece, which was not true, so I had to wait for a guy to drive me to the other side. I was very lucky to be picked up by a very sweet German guy travelling all the way to Gernany, although I had a intention to go to Bulgaria, so we spent two days together in Greece and Samothrace, after which he dropped me off at a road going to Bulgaria.

Not that much space for cars but somehow it works. Guy from Bulgaria picked me up after 5-10 minutes of waiting.

All the traffic at this point is crossing the border, now that both Romania and Bulgaria are in Schengen, no border checks either, and the cars are going pretty slow and do stop to ask where you're going. Be aware that at the time of my crossing, the bridge was getting renovated, and only one way was open, might be difficult to cross on foot if you wanted to, and might make the waiting times longer. But you can walk up to people and ask to take you!

Lol didn't even had the time to write my sign (used the thumb while few cars were passing by) that a car with two Macedonians asked me where I go : "South, North Macedonia...Bulgaria?" "Come in!". Indirect ride to Skopje because they invited me at a generous grill restaurant! Had no problem to pass me trough the border, even though I was heavily controlled

Lots of space to pull over, definitely possible to get a ride directly to Bulgaria as many cars have Bulgarian plates. With my BG sign I got taken to Giurgiu, the driver offered to take me to the bridge toll booth but I got off at the Kaufland because I needed food instead.

Unbelievably bad, not traffic towards Bulgaria but if you have to it’s doable, don’t try to go farther than KP. Stand all the way on the highway that way there is a chance for the highway people to stop. Eventually a guy stopped on the curve for me. Only saw like 20 cars over 45 mins

Do not recommend, cars are going fast and not wanting to stop to go towards Bulgaria, that being said there isn’t a better spot so I agree with the other commenter saying eventually you will be picked up. Use a sign that says KP

Easy to get to kumanov and closer to the Bulgaria border

Good spot by the poll station to get a ride to Sofia/Bulgaria. There were a few policemen doing controls but they weren’t interested in us and didn’t stop us. You can even reach this spot by foot (that’s what we did) from Dimitrovgrad by hitchhiking to a spot on the local road nearby and then there’s a path to the toll station. (check out the map) There was a fence around the station but it had big holes you could claim through and toll station employees and police didn’t mind.

Good spot, found a ride to Bulgaria in seconds (he was going all the way to Burgas).

Good spot because a lot of traffic was at the start (5pm) but then dropped very fast (6pm). Was standing with a sign bulgaria/k.palanka. Maybe a bit far saying signs but there is no other place kinda to go there on that road. Also maybe i was not that lucky because i was trying kinda late in the evening. But eventually very nice truck driver who was paying a toll(stramge because all others had the autamic one) took me all the way to sofia.
