Not a lot of south going traffic.
We were picked up by a big truck that had already picked up 5 other hitchhikers

We were 7 people trying to get out of time. The girl that had waited the long had waited for more than 3 hours.
We spread out a couple hundred meters from eachother. Luckily we were picked up first by a car that passed some of the others.

The cars are driving fast, but they are able to see you from far away. Our sign was probably a big help here.
Cars can pull over in the bus lane

There was a police check when we were here. The police was nice and asked the cars they stopped if they could take us to Coyhaique.
Everyone said no, and the cars they didn't stop did not want to stop next to the police.
We walked 300 down the road and was picked up in 10 minutes

Cars were speeding past us. If someone is going here, ask them to drop you off in Villa Santa Lucia where the cars are driving slower

Luckily I just passed through with a ride I already had, but it could be a bad place to get stuck overnight in the winter, with sub-freezing temperatures and no public facilities (there are a few houses nearby, in an emergency). Remember that if you're headed south, both the ferry and the later border crossings close later at night (9 or 10).

December 2024, 10:30 a.m., Some people are very nice in Chile, but maybe the stupid military is stressful. I would recommend walking 700m south so that you are out of sight of the stupid soldiers and can continue hitchhiking south without any problems.

This is a truck depot for agricultural goods, all heading to Iquique. Great spot to ask around.

Got a lift back after the cerro castillo day hike. Not much traffic but enough people/tourists going back to coyhaique to easily get a lift

Lots of shade from trees, refreshments from the gas station. Picked up very quick by a local driving all the way. Many trucks stopped to take us halfway to the road that splits off to Chile border but that is in the middle of nowhere.

We were not able to catch a ride here. Because of the political situation and a lack of petrol there was very few traffic. We were waiting over 4 hours and gave it up. 4 other locals tried to get a ride here too at the same time, so if you go hitchhiking, this might be the spot - direction Chile

really, really good spot to get over the Andes to Chile and directly to Santiago. My original plan was to go South but I had no luck finding a car going there so I ended up taking an offer to go west.
The employees at the fuel station are nice but the won't allow you to ask the drivers directly.

There's a YPF service station with Wifi, Cafe, toilets (closes around 10 pm). Northwartds to Bariloche and westwards to Chile Chico should work easily.

Si vas a Neuquén, te conviene venirte hasta este cruce así agarrás a los que vienen desde Chile/La Angostura, funciona rápido! NO hagas dedo a la salida de Bariloche, es más dificil!

1 hour to get a ride to the next camping site, about 15 km further on.
Generally a road, where compared to the rest of Chile, it was more difficult to get a ride.
Chileans were most of the times on vacation here and full, argentinians didn't stop once...

border of san sebastian. i waited 2 days, border guards are nice though and let us sleep in the unused office. there is a small town a couple kms towards chile, don't walk there and hitch from there. drivers more likely to pick you up at the border, especially if you talk to them

Good Spot. It's a gas station that has a lot of traffic.
If you prefer, you can walk to the roundabout, and choose to go north to Formosa/Paraguay or West to Salta and Chile

Checkpoint of Gendarmeria. Speak with the officials and they can stop a truck for you. Lots of trucks from Paraguay going to duty free zone in Iquique, Chile.

Spot for hitching south to Formosa. Many Paraguayan trucks, most going all the way to duty free zone in Iquique in Chile. If someone offers you a lift to the checkpoint of Gendarmeria go for it, they can help you finding a lift with truckers.

Ideal para ir hasta Uspallata/ Chile.
Importante: no pararse a Potrerillos.

CEASA: There's a train (CPTM - ESMERALDA LINE) that takes you here easily. You have to take the YELLOW LINE of the METRO and then do the combination. Get down in CEASA station. (In every station you can ask for a map of lines). Here is not the best option for those who want a fast ride. Take your time, be amazed with this huge (HUGE!!) space full of truckers, fruits, greens, fish, and lots of other foods and talk with EVERYONE. When I say everyone, i mean EVERYONE (not only truckers). Say them where you want to go, ask if they know where people who go that way, usually park their vehicles or in which tent inside CEASA they have their lunch. People who works here knows lots of people, and if they like you, chances are HIGHER for you to find a trucker going to RIO, CURITIBA, PORTO ALEGRE, CHILE, PARAGUAY, ARGENTINA, MANAUS, PORTO VELHO. EVERYWHERE! Truckers here can go everywhere!!!
When I tryed to hitch a ride from here, I was looking for Rio de Janeiro, I couldn't find anyone going there in that day (only in the next one) but I received offers of truckers who were going to LOTS of other places.

There is a petrol station situated, where you can find rides to Chile as well as to the north of Argentina and Bolivia.
