Mixed feelings about this spot. It's a service area/gas station/restaurant and onramp combination but you can't cover both. Minimal traffic and most people ignored me (not even talking to me) and busses/tours/minivans won't take you. Also most people just head to the closeby scenic areas.
I ended up standing little further on the onramp and a lovely truck driver took me all the way to Kunming. It's a hilly ride, pretty views and great road to hh. Be aware: (Car) Traffic further west is suuuuper light. At some points almost zero. Maybe the newer highway is better (more cars, even less trucks) if you can't find a ride all the ways. Trucks use this highway tho but can be super slow. Good luck!

It's not on this map but it's a service area/restaurant/gas station. Lot's of traffic but mostly tours (busses or minivans) which take tourists around. I did not have luck hh them.
A nice family took me for a few kilometers. As usual: Asking around works the best

This spot did not work for me. The staff at the toll station was very strict about hh. The requested me to stand before the gate where cars go very fast (way more dangerous than after the gate). The told me that the Minister of Transport will visit the highway on this day. Maybe this had an impact. I waited 60min and then decided that it's a dead spot.
Just took a quick taxi to the next service area.

Gas station and medium to low traffic. Staff helped me to build and write a small sign. Lovely people and then the showed me pictures of prior hh that stopped there. Funny shit!
I only use the sign to show that I want to go somewhere. Ususally it's not thaaat helpful as many drivers have trouble reading it or just don't care.
I ended up speaking to a few people and they agreed to take me. Horrible ride as one of them smelled like a homeless person (nothing against the poor) and the driver was watching TikToks (chinese version) on full blast. They refused to drop me at the city entrence and took me too far.

The police of my last ride took me to the next police checkpoint. Here I had to wait again but they bought me food and water. No way to reject it.
They told me to wait and organised a nice truck driver who took me. Horrible ride as the mountains are steep so try to catch a car. Took over 3h for a 2h car ride. Nicce guy tho and police called me to make sure I reached safe.

Big station and a lot of traffic - but as usual the police is not a big fan of it. I had to wait for two team leaders to come, had a 1h discussion only for them to take to the next reststop. They tried to tell me that hh is not allowed in China - just stand your ground.
You can take the Metro Line 3 to the closest station and then taxi to the road left to it. From there you can hop the fence and sneak past the police. Don't worry, they will come anyways.

First couple I asked took me for 6h. They had a very comfy car and invited me to Hotpot with their friends + free accommodation. Pengzhou is a big hub for fruit and veg import/export. I had a look around the market.
After getting few rides in China:
1. Don‘t use a sign - just wave
2. Talking with translation apps works good
3. The chinese are incredibly hospitable

Took less than 5 minutes to catch a comfy ride. Again, first they say that they won‘t to Chengdu but end up driving in the direction for 2+h.

Big toll station. Had a discussion with the police if I could stand there. Usually it‘s fine but those guys were annoying. After getting cleared I walked behind the toll gate (usually work better) but then the staff harassed me. After 30mins of discussion they understood and allowed it too.
Pro Tip: Don‘t reject rides in China. They will tell you that they won‘t go towards your direction but they do. Don‘t use a sign, just wave at them. Medium traffic on a workday morning.

Some traffic around but always the same issue. First they say it‘s free but then want money. Little bit annoying. We just hopped out.

Lot‘s of annoying taxis and people who want money. Right when we wanted to get a taxi outside the city a nice lady stopped. She took us fishing and dropped us afterwards. 10/10

ONLY GO WEST
After being denied by the police the hh back the next day. Medium traffic in the morning but we only waited 10min. The guy said it‘s free but then demanded money. We just got out.

DON‘T come here!!!!
There is a very serious checkpoint. They told us it‘s a military area. While they were very friendly, they informed us, that we can get arrested for 10 days. They forced us to turn around with a driver they stopped. He had to bring us to the next police station in Nalati.
At the police station we were treated good. They forced to check us into a hotel and told us to bugger off in the morning.
They are building a new highway rn, so passing might be possible in the future. Double check with a police station before trying. They are serious.

YOU CAN‘T GO TO URUMQI FROM HERE
(might change)
We stood less than 5min before getting picked up by a solo lady on her way to Korla.
DON‘T go past this point, there are two issues:
1. At the drop location: There is a very serious checkpoint. They told us it‘s a military area. While they were very friendld, they informed us, that we can get arrested for 10 days. They forced us to turn around with s driver they stopped. He had to bring us to the next police station in Nalati.
2. At the pickup location: Opposite the road there is a big and serious police checkpoint. we did not see it as we came from the rural road. They asked a lot of questions on our way back. The civilian that was forced to take us to the police station helped us explaining the situation.
They are building a new highway rn, so passing might be possible in the future. Double check with a police station before trying. They are serious.

The highway is closed off. Only a few trucks travel on it. There is a big police checkpoint in the direction of Urumqi. They will not let you pass (as we found out later).
We took a tractor back to the main road.

We took a taxi to this spot. The police stopped us, we explained our plan (go to Urumqi) and they told us to wait. After 5min they found a car to Nalati Apricote Blossom. Two nice chinese kazahchs took us.

This is where trucks leave after passing customs from Vietnam. I didn't personally have any luck here, but that could have been because I got there late in the day and they weren't going far. Also locals there getting picked up, but seemed to be prearranged.

NO A HITCH
Busses to China leave from here. You can‘t hitch the border. The last bus of the day goes at 6pm (THIS MIGHT CHANGE). It costs 5000 and tickets can be bought with card. Crossing was easy and took 2-3h (+3h time difference). Be ready to take out all metals from your bag.
Good luck!

tried to hitch a ride to china, only had to wait about 5 minutes to get a lift, I think they got the destination wrong though because I was dropped off at some weird camp where they made me do a bunch of work and beat me up a lot

Can't cross border now as a pedestrian!! (as of sept 2025) Need to book a bus from China to Zharkent. 8€ and took like 3-4 hours all together (waiting for the bus to fill up and crossing the border)

Hitchhiked the Pamir Highway. It's very possible but slow and cold (early october). It took me only 5 days from Sary-Tash to Dushanbe. I didn't do much sightseeing/detours etc. Some locals and some European overlanders. After Murghab plenty of trucks from China driving to Dushanbe but they drive ~20km/h because how bad the roads are. Don't expect to make much progress in a day. Plenty of guesthouses even in small villages, iOverlander offline map is handy for that^^

Trafic flow is low, but atleast every truck driving here goes to Murgab or to the Chinese border. In our case a truck driver drove to the Chinese border! But since the pamir highway and the road is so shit, be prepared to drive for 14 hours to the China border! At one point our truck driver got tired and we had to drive the truck ourselves for over 6 hours. Good spot, got here by shared taxi which was 50 somoni from Khorog.

After 3,5 hours got only a 10km ride. After trying to hitch from the other spot we surrendered. If you plan to hitch in China anywhere else then the Tibetan areas (where locals will pick you up in no time) your best best will be truckers

First time trying to hitch in china. Only taxis stopped asking for money. I was told by locals that there's no way ill get a ride, i decided to surrender and after 4 hours of no luck i took the train to Xishuangbanna.

Best spot to get north from LPB
Cars need to slow down because of the roundabout and bad road conditions. Many trucks would go all the way to China

Coming from China, right behind the border post, many trucks are stoping for rest or gas refill. Easy to get a lift to Osh here, but be aware of the border opening times (It has a lunch break of several hours where everything stands still). Some small shops and restaurants are there to stock up on food while waiting.

Towards Zharkent. After crossing the border, just walk 15 minutes until you come to the end of tow. Traffic is very low. Unlike in China. make the money issue clear before you get in the car.

I agree, easy to walk there from the old town. Pingyao is a small town, so not much traffic, but this is China and hitchhiking is easy even with little traffic.

If you are going in the direction of China remember to take big supply of water as you may spend sometime waiting for the ride. There is also no place to hide from the sun !(It gets hot and there is at least 3km to the city)

To Murgab: From Sary Tash town, walk down the towards Tajikistan, the road splits at a police stop. Wait there for cars going left towards the snowy mountains. Alot of trucks from China to Tajikistan no longer go through here and hitchhiking (for free) is incredibly difficult. Even for paid transport to Murgab, waiting times are long.

Follow the road towards China for about 2km from town. Walk past an empty customs terminal to the new one. There will be alot of Chinese trucks in the morning, they stay there for an indefinite time for 'processing'. Some of them will sleep in Murgab, some go to Khorog, some go all the way to Dushanbe. They all leave around a similar time.
