DIRECTION MONGOLIA 🇲🇳 : Somewhere here is a truck driver place where they go in direction of Mongolia : either Hovd or Ölgiy. If you go there you can talk to them and ask if someone goes there and can take you all the way to Hovd. I managed to do that but because of miscommunication, the truck driver just wanted to drop me at the border. That was not good because it was already end of afternoon and there is no warm place to stay at the border on Mongolian side. Also, I could just find a ride earlier. Truck, M45 Deo gratias !

Because it stopped directly, my drivers talked with him and the guy was asking for 30RMB (which is the price for a full shared taxi from the city center). I negociated 20RMB. DIRECTION MONGOLIA 🇲🇳 : Prepare yourself to wait for long. There will be very few vehicles on the highway and even less going in this rest area but eventually you will find a ride to Qinghe where you can go to the border. Just ask the people with a translated message. If you're unlucky, you can sleep for free here. Staff told me they can give me a room, but anyway you can sleep inside. Thanks Ma Liu Yi, M32. You can also pay shared taxis from Fuyun to Qinghe if you don't mind. Deo gratias !

DIRECTION MONGOLIA 🇲🇳 : Once at this toll station, police officers will help you find a ride that goes to Fuyan or Qinghe. You can find rides that goes in other directions also. If your objective is to go to Mongolia, ask to be dropped at the rest area before the turn of the G680. This is a ideal spot because you can spend a night for free there. There is also a shop inside where you can buy food, just in case. Minibus, ~M55 Deo gratias !

DIRECTION MONGOLIA 🇲🇳 : The objective is to go at the toll station Nord of the city on this highway. Not the best spot tho. I waited 2 hours, got visited by Police (that just wanted to help me). The problem here is that there is too much local traffic. Majority of cars take this road to go inside the industrial area from another entry point. I think it is possible to get a ride but you can find a better place, look my other spot. Deo gratias.

DIRECTION MONGOLIA 🇲🇳 : Objective : the toll station on the G7. It is not an ideal spot but it worked for me after half hour. It is better spot than my other one because, at least, here you can filter the cars that goes on the nothern direction. Cars that go out of this industrial zone are also slower so they can see you. DIRECTION URUMQI 🇨🇳 : So here I hitchhiked not on the toll station but on the Gas station that is actually closed with nothing in it, but somehow a truck stopped for me and took me all the way to Urumqi. I arrived at night, check "Hostel on the way" in Urumqi, the owner is really good and can arrange late arrivals. It's a new hostel and I paid only 6€ a night. ~M55 Deo gratias !

DIRECTION URUMQI 🇨🇳 : Is it possible to hitchhike in Xingyang ? With the help of God, everything is possible ! Hitchhiking in this province is actually lot of fun : I had no problem going from Khorgos to Mongolian border even though police visited me several times...to help me ! If you want to join Urumqi easily : 1. Use a sign with this : 搭便车 (HITCHHIKING) and get a ride on the expressway (not the highway, the road that go beside it) to Qingshuihezhen. Police visited me, very kind, just asked me where I was going and they even added 乌鲁木齐市 (Urumqi) on my sign. 2. Once in Qingshuihezhen, hitchhike on the entrance of the G30 (personally I paid a taxi 1+€ to go to the spot but you can walk). 3. Get a ride to the toll station in Guozigoukou and you should find a direct ride to Urumqi. If you can get a ride from Khorgos that goes directly to the toll of Guozigoukou it's even better. ⚠️YOU SHOULD AVOID THE SOUTHERN ROAD⚠️ Some reports (2026) says that it is not accessible for hitchhikers. DIRECTION URUMQI 🇨🇳 : Low traffic but will eventually work. This place is 99% legal and you won't have any trouble. Actually, I was hitchhiking on the main road before the turn but the Police gave me a ride to here hahaha. Your objective is to join the toll station in Guozigoukou. I would moderate the previous review on this spot, it won't easily take you "anywhere". We wanted to go in Guizhou province, no one seemed to go. Maybe 30 or 40 cars stopped, almost all going to Jishou. We had to switch plans with a loft to Huaihua, I don't know if it will be easier there but at least there are trains.

Standing before the tollgate worked great for us to find a ride in the direction of Furong or Fenghuang.

Directions : Shanxi, Henan, Shandong, Beijing, Terracotta Army, Huashan. It took us some time to figure out this spot, we would have left in 5 minutes if we had understood that you can use the Terracotta Army traffic to your advantage no matter where you go. If you come in the morning, there are many cars going there. You can ask them to drop you on the first service station 7km down the road. There, you will have more long-distance traffic. Our goal was to go to Pingyao, someone heading to Shandong quickly picked us up at that service station and brought us to a service station near Huashan, where the road splits between Shanxi and Henan directions. So this spot is also really convenient if you are trying to go to the Terracotta Army or to Mount Hua !

Lots of traffic, everybody goes south. Once you resch here, you’ve made it to guangzhou. People were so friendly and interested. Layout of the station is compact but lot’s of parking for trucks too. Took less than 5min. Great spot!

Big station with bad layout. Lots of people and traffic but you won’t be able to cover even 50% by standing on one door. It took me 30min and some asking around to catch a truck driver. Trashed cabin but took me far.

Small station but lots of traffic and great layout. All the cars will pass on one lane with enough space to stop. Worked great with a sign.

Toll station. It seemed like the last resort but even this failed. I don't think it's possible to go from CQ to East/South via this route. Two cars stopped but they went to CQ. Friendly people but wrong direction. We gave up and took the train. What a wasted day - anyways, the next day will be better :)

Mid station. Not much traffic but at least the stores were open. Some shade and people. Nobody was very useful tbh. Going to CQ to South/East through this route seems bad. Better try Guiyang/Guilin. A english teacher picked us up and got us off the highway.

DIRECTION CHINA 🇨🇳: I confirm that bus is mandatory to cross into China. When at the border, kazakh soldiers controlled everyone's ticket. Also, you have to take two times the bus again to cross the entire border. You can hitchhike this part I believe if you ask the guards to put you on the next bus. For men : they might ask you to shave your beard. Happened to two friends of mine. I shaved mine the day before because I did not want them to ask me to shave my moustache... Once you arrive on the Chinese side, look for a place to sleep on iOverlander or Trip.com. There H+2 with China so most probably you will arrive late. DIRECTION CHINA 🇨🇳 : To come here, you can take different buses (check 2GIS/Yandex) it should take 1h30+ from city center considering traffic in Almaty is chaotic. Here, cars and trucks will go either North either East. Personally, I have catch a small truck that was going East to Shelek and asked him to dropped me in the rest area before the town, so I could catch a longer ride. However, there is not a perfect spot but it will work. I waited almost an hour, trucks go too fast to stop. Rahmet Shakh! M46

DIRECTION CHINA 🇨🇳 : Not the best spot but will work in the end. There is room to stop but trucks are going too fast. If you go for launch or dinner there will be many vehicles parked. You can eat, toilets, not too bad neither. I was taken by Omka to Jarkent where you need to pay a bus to go after the border, in a shared taxi that agreed taking me for free because I said I was hitchhiking all the way from France. Even the other people inside were joyful of helping me. I waited long time but I would say that you can find faster than me. My driver was driving at 140km/h so it was no problem hahaha M36

We camped a few kilometers before the border and showed up there in the morning. A Kirghiz tour guide on his way to pick up tourists helped us through the Kirghiz border - which was smooth and friendly - and then drove us through the Kirghiz no-man's-land until the beginning of the Chinese area. This part is several kilometers long, and I don't think they'll let you walk it so my guess is that in case you're not lucky as we were, you will need to ask someone to bring you along. At the Chinese doors, we started to walk and an officer immediately stopped us. He told us to wait aside and asked a car to take us to the Chinese customs office, again a few kilometers further. We met the car again after the checks and they offered to drive us to Kashgar. If not, I guess you need to arrange the trip with a truck or a taxi drive, or maybe the Chinese officers will offer help as they were all very kind. The passport and security checks were quick and easy, no deep searches of any sort as we had heard many times. All in all, crossing there by foot without an organized trip felt totally fine and didn't cost us anything, although I think we got a bit lucky that it went so easily. Make sure to come in the morning as the two hours difference with China makes the day much shorter than it should be. We were also told that it's closed on weekend for travellers.

Lots of traffic and toll station staff. No shade and it took suprisingly long to catch a ride. Some cars stopped and asked for money (which never happend to me in over 2500km of hh in China - not sure why this is different). There is a long distance bus stop with regular busses to Shangri-La / Lijiang (if you ever wanna give up). We were not allowed to stand behind the toll gate but there is enough room (chinese stop everywhere anyways lmao) for cars to stop. It might (??) be more traffic south then north but still a good spot.

Border crossing is still only possible by bus. I hitchhiked to the border and tried to walk. They would not let me. The guards were not friendly at all. But as it is always the case in asia, there will be some very friendly locals who are happy to help. You can try to hop on a bus from right before the border but most bus drivers will want to see a ticket (which you get in zharkent for 5000 tenge). there was a lady charging 2000 tenge to help you get on the bus, which seemed to be necessary, because none of the buses wanted to take us people waiting infront of the border. granted most of them were probably full. in total you would have to pay 7000 tenge to cross from here (5000 + 2000). i don't know how but i ended up not paying anything to cross, the others told me not to worry about it. but i am guessing someone payed for me. the crossing took a long time. 2-3h i would say. it is probably smartest to hitchhike to zharkent and take the bus fron there. have fun in china<3

This is not a hitchhiking spot. This is very good park for making money by music performance - busking! Although forbidden for tourists in Taiwan, guards in the park can accept you and let you continue unbothered. Many buskers on weekends and occasionally on weekday evenings. Also ask for art villages where taiwanese tourists go at weekends, like Luojin village in Lukang township. Another great spot at the train station just few metres east of the train symbol on Google Maps - bus stop Taichung Station Dazhi N road and walk 50m south if busy) Busking in hot summer days made me book ferries to leave Taiwan to Fuzhou and slow trains to cross China. Winter can be more helpful as well as more hitchhikable.

Just stood at the highway entrance with a 河口 sign and got a ride relatively quickly. Mengzi railway station isn’t too far if you fail to get a ride and need to get out of China asap

Not sure, but I ended up paying for the ride from here (5 Euro). He commercial driver took me right to the border. There are some checkpoint on the way. They will ask you some questions and tell you that you kinda need to cross if you go further. I'm not sure if it's legally allowed to hh across those checkpoints (they are further south, before the city), but taking the commercial ride which was arranged by my last drier who took me for free, was a good idea. The border was open at 6pm (chinese time) and should be open till 10pm. Chinese side is very modern and quick, Vietnam is rather slow but works too. I really enjoyed this trip across China and can recommend it to anyone (as long as you're not bothered by the police and politics, don't close your eyes too much and always be aware of the background you're moving in)!! After soeeping here overnight me and my friend managed to catch a free ride with the buss that runs from the shukov statue to Arxan in China. The buss driver refused to accept payment as we where the first forigners to come this way according to him :)

Qhen qe got here our previous driver talked to the peopple at the industrial plant and got us a ride towards the chinese border. There are oil trucks driving all morning and evening towards china though. It is a asphalt road.

Had a sign for Wuhan (武汉), a truck driver going all the way to Henan stopped for me and gave me a ride to the last gas station before Wuhan, dinner, and recorded me saying “China number one” for his douyin

Big station and a lot of traffic - but as usual the police is not a big fan of it. I had to wait for two team leaders to come, had a 1h discussion only for them to take to the next reststop. They tried to tell me that hh is not allowed in China - just stand your ground. You can take the Metro Line 3 to the closest station and then taxi to the road left to it. From there you can hop the fence and sneak past the police. Don't worry, they will come anyways.

First couple I asked took me for 6h. They had a very comfy car and invited me to Hotpot with their friends + free accommodation. Pengzhou is a big hub for fruit and veg import/export. I had a look around the market. After getting few rides in China: 1. Don‘t use a sign - just wave 2. Talking with translation apps works good 3. The chinese are incredibly hospitable

Big toll station. Had a discussion with the police if I could stand there. Usually it‘s fine but those guys were annoying. After getting cleared I walked behind the toll gate (usually work better) but then the staff harassed me. After 30mins of discussion they understood and allowed it too. Pro Tip: Don‘t reject rides in China. They will tell you that they won‘t go towards your direction but they do. Don‘t use a sign, just wave at them. Medium traffic on a workday morning.

NO A HITCH Busses to China leave from here. You can‘t hitch the border. The last bus of the day goes at 6pm (THIS MIGHT CHANGE). It costs 5000 and tickets can be bought with card. Crossing was easy and took 2-3h (+3h time difference). Be ready to take out all metals from your bag. Good luck!

Took less than 10min to catch a ride. He demanded money at the end. At the spot there is a restaurant and a bus stop. We just stood on the highway to catch all the traffic. Be there early, more cars will go to China.

tried to hitch a ride to china, only had to wait about 5 minutes to get a lift, I think they got the destination wrong though because I was dropped off at some weird camp where they made me do a bunch of work and beat me up a lot

Can't cross border now as a pedestrian!! (as of sept 2025) Need to book a bus from China to Zharkent. 8€ and took like 3-4 hours all together (waiting for the bus to fill up and crossing the border)

Hitchhiked the Pamir Highway. It's very possible but slow and cold (early october). It took me only 5 days from Sary-Tash to Dushanbe. I didn't do much sightseeing/detours etc. Some locals and some European overlanders. After Murghab plenty of trucks from China driving to Dushanbe but they drive ~20km/h because how bad the roads are. Don't expect to make much progress in a day. Plenty of guesthouses even in small villages, iOverlander offline map is handy for that^^
