Speeding up lane with a bus stop at the end of it, the only main problem here is not the best visibility, however you'll be able to catch a car within 20-40 minutes still

Bus stop towards Rakvere, okay visibility, the speeds are fine and the new bus stop they are building is pretty long, for now this is a very good place to get a ride further, if your car was headed to Püssi/Kiviõli instead and switch to a new car here, wait times of 5-20 minutes expected

Towards Jõhvi, there is a really wide gravel side here where you can stop anything going the northern direction, low speeds, good visibility, good amount of traffic, wait times of 5-15 minutes expected

Towards Jõhvi, you can also use the bus stop 100 meters south of you however then you'll be not able to catch cars coming from the Rakvere road, the road is really wide here and you can stop anything even if it looks like an odd place, it really isn't so, wait times of 10-25 minutes expected

Towards Jõhvi, this area isn't that good for hitching a car, Mustvee roads system is notoriously built pretty bad for this kind of stuff however you'll still be able to stop someone taking a pity on you within 20-40 minutes

Towards Mustvee, slightly awkward for cars to stop, however just the right amount of traffic density and decent enough amount of long distance cars means you'll be good for finding a car pretty fast, wait times of 5-15 minutes expected

Towards Jõgeva, wide speeding up lane for a road that barely has any cars turning, you should aim for the cars coming from Põltsamaa, as there is really good visibility and enough traffic to stop one of them within 5-10 minutes, probably the best spot along the road

Towards Jõgeva, ideal spot as there is huge bus stop with a gravel side going long enough you could stop an aeroplane if you wished to, cars do tend to speed up a lot and you don't have the most traffic however you'll get someone to stop for you within 15-30 minutes

Towards Saarepeedi/Põltsamaa, uncomfortable for cars to stop however the speeds are low and you have good chance to catch a car turning as well as cars coming from Viljandi, good enough amount of traffic and wait times of 5-20 minutes expected

Towards Viljandi, slightly uncomfortable as there's not the best visibility for the cars however speeds are still slow and wide bus stop guarantees you a car within 10-30 minutes

Locals go fishing here and with a right timing and a good way with words, you'll be able to fit yourself to their car most likely going to Karksi-Nuia, however I'd say there will be around 3 cars throughout the day going by here, so good luck with timing, lovely lake and area though to enjoy your time in

May look like a shortcut to Kabli, but if your goal is to get to Kabli and you have the opportunity I'd much rather recommend going through Häädemeeste and hitch the old romantic route rather than go for the shortcut road as there is basically no traffic on this road, you'll end up walking to the old highway or vice versa before encountering anyone

Towards Ikla, finding a car going further can be a bit difficult as tourists are quite packed and not so many locals anymore, wait times of 40-80 minutes expected on not so great day

Towards Risti/Tallinn, cars stopping here will most likely go at least to Risti, good visibility, and wide enough bus stop, wait times of 5-10 minutes expected, generally good spot all around

Towards Palivere/Tallinn, a small bus stop with okay visibility, you can also try the wider roadside by the Taebla school's turn, however a bus stop seems to be working a bit better here, wait times of 20-30 minutes expected

Towards Aovere, (Tartu), if a car comes from Tammistu they'll have perfect speed to stop for you, however they are most likely headed to Tartu, if your goal is to go further, ask for Aovere (would be a 2km detour if they would take the shortcut road otherwise), not the best for the cars on the main road but still good enough of a visibility, wait times of 5-15 minutes expected

Towards Savikoja, low speeds, not the best for cars to stop, but due to it being such an odd place almost always you get one of the first cars stopping for you, loads of locals and small distances to be expected however wait times of 5-15 minutes

Ideal spot towards Tartu, long speeding lane in 70km/h area with a bus stop at the end of it and great visibility with just enough cars, what else to ask for? wait times of 5-10 minutes expected

Towards Räpina, you can either stay in Mikitamäe however there isn't an ideal spot over there or walk a bit further outside of the place and have a good visibility area for yourself, due to low traffic you'll probably catch a car anywhere along the straight parts of the road, wait times of 5-20 minutes expected

Towards Estonia, really hard road to catch a car, tried since Koni by the side of the road, however it is very uncomfortable road with no roadsides for cars to stop, as well as very little traffic and those that do pass you are either with full cars or lorries with high speeds, wait times of 30-80 minutes expected

Just didnt feel right this spot to go towards Estonia. Most of the traffic goes down to Daugavpils it seems more likely. Also two lanes and the first one is often occupied by trucks

Quite a shit spot. Akward for cars to stop. We got offered two shorter rides to surrounding areas but a guy on his day off offered to take us to the A1 right after Riga. Seems mostly local traffic. Not much people going onwards to Estonia

brilliant spot to get to Ivangorod and cross the border to Estonia. to get here, take metro to "prospect Veteranov", then get on the bus 145/145Э.

Ask around from the truckers stopping here to take you further, if you get lucky you can find a direct ride to Estonia, all of the lorries here go distance, but you have to be lucky in timing because this parking next to the petrol station only can have about 2-3 trucks at once stopping.

The hitcher's deadpoint, even though almost everywhere else in Estonia a straight road on a rather decently driven road would mean easy stops, this place seems to be cursed, so far I have yet to meet a person who has been picked up on the Karksi straight including me, best bet is to walk til the curves come by in in couple of kms, best of luck

Truck parking for lorries headed towards Estonia, would recommend coming here early in the morning from Riga and talk with the drivers, other times probably not so great

Fast traffic, but a kind family did manage to stop within the space. They gave me a short intra-city ride to a better spot for rides North to Estonia.

Maybe I was greedy, but finding a car to Estonia was almost impossible. Not really advised, but I believe this is the best place going north from Riga.

Perfect place, just check the ferry arrival times, lots of trucks to Latvia and Estonia.

Towards Strenci, perfect spot, very wide shoulder, one of the first cars will stop, be aware of very low traffic though, always works for me, I'd recommend going to Strenci and then head to Valka if you are going to Estonia, wait times of 5-25 minutes

Maybe i am lucky, but literally first truck took me to latwia-estonia border

Moved here from the other spot next to the Sillaotsa bus stop (waited there 2,5h). From here I got a ride in 10min directly to Ikla (Estonia-Latvia border). Stand next to the motorway at the traffic lights, use a thumb preferably. 16 Jul 2025

Get there by bus no. 57, after hour i get car to estonia. But we had a lot of chances to get to panevezys. Just walk around gas station and ask them where they are going to.

Amazing gas station for either direction, try to find PL cars for going Poland and EST,LV for Latvia/Estonia, a lot of international cars around here, ask around, you'll most likely find someone going your way sooner or later, usually sooner, within 10-20 minutes. You can also hitchhike next to the gas station towards Panevežys if you find no cars going your way (north), still a very good bus stop also

More local traffic, but some people head from Rapla to Tartu, so I was counting on that (as I personally like to take this route with my car to Tartu). Walked from the centre of Rapla to here. A couple stopped and took me from here to all the way to Tartu with a quick stop in a graveyard in the middle of Estonia where they planned on stopping and I had no problem with that as I just wanted to be home by the evening.

This is so far my best, fastest and coolest experience in Estonia! So an undercover/secret service agent who was on a mission to drive towards Ida-Viru, took me, even though he was in a hurry, as they had just captured some criminals that needed to be interrogated there. He had done hitchhiking himself when he was younger and that’s why he had stopped. So he told me that he’d get me to Tartu very fast and that he will speed and he cannot be fined (going waaaay over the speed limit lol) as it’s a work reason, though he was in a normal civilian car (we got to Tartu in less than 45 min instead of an hour). I won’t and can’t get into details but he told me lots about his previous work in the police, chasing criminals, those high-speed chases, loopholes in the law etc. He obviously wasn’t allowed to give me any information on his current job though I tried my best to feed my curiosity. I really felt like I was in an action movie, so I truly loved this experience in my home country with this lovely man working for the safety of our nation! 😎

Welcome to Hiiumaa, the best area for hitching in the whole Estonia in my experience, here go a bit further down from the bus stops, there's 2 lanes for a long time and just wait until a ferry comes, you'll most likely get a ride but be specific where you wanna go, wait time; whenever the next ferry comes

Really great spot if headed to Tartu or Tallinn (lots of summer enjoyers from north estonia in here during that time), not the widest, but reasonable bus stop, waiting time 5-20 minutes
