Not a bad spot, you can be seen clearly. Low car traffic the further north you go, but people are more willing to take you in my opinion. There is a gas station nearby, but mostly local traffic.

Same story as my previous spot. There are only a few cars on this road, but they usually travel long distances. You can hide under a gas station roof in case of rain, as I did. In case you need a place to sleep, there is an emergency Laavu (shelter) nearby. There is a large place to stop, and you can be seen clearly.

The deeper you go into Lapland, the fewer cars there are. This is not the greatest spot, but I think you can't get much better. You can be seen clearly, and there is a place to stop. But most of the cars go left, not north.

I don´t think you can get much better when going towards Kittilä. I hitchhiked just behind the crossroads, only to realise there is a better spot not far away.

I would say one of the best spots on the way to Rovaniemi. Basically, all the cars going to Rovaniemi go on this road, and because it is rural, I believe they are much more willing to stop.

Same story as my spot, just further south. Fast cars, but quite a lot of them, and a large place to stop.

I took a shorter ride to a nearby village. Cars are going fast and are not willing to stop. I would advise going from the south to get off at the Pihtipudas gas station.

A great one, a guy got me to Pihtipudas. Large bus station, cars going slowly and north. There is a gas station nearby if you need something.

This spot was great for me, although I think I was just lucky. A car just across from the spot waved at me and got me to Jyväskylä.

Not a bad spot for the ride south. However, I made a mistake and trusted my previous driver, who dropped me off here. I needed to go north, not south. But this guy brought me to a nice spot, where I could turn around.

Absolutely amazing spot, there is an even better one just after the roundabout though. Plenty of cars are going slowly in your direction.

Plenty of cars go to Porvoo. I hitched a boat to this place, and I had no trouble getting from here. You can be seen clearly, and there are plenty of locals and tourists going from the archipelago.

Not much traffic

Pretty area. Not many people driving - you can wait hours between cars if you're unlucky. Might as well walk. But if a car passes, chances are it's a local, and chances are they'll pick you up out of curiosity. Keep an eye out for wolverines :)

This is a university parking lot... The vast majority of cars will be local to Joensuu and surrounding villages. But if you don't care too much where your going, then sure..

25 minutes to get a ride to Niittylahti

We tried at the gas station entrance at least half an hour. Then we walked to this spot and caught a ride after 5 min. It has begun to get dark, both spots might work better earlier. The driver had already seen us at the gas station and take us to Oulu.

Towards Oulu. Better to use the bus stop, asking people at the gas station might work as well. The driver could've taken us to Sievi, but we hopped off at Pihtipudas. (2 of us)

Do you want to go to Finland and have experience of the lifetime? If yes, this is a place for you. Stand by the gate to the pier, there is only one and every boat owner need to come through it. Now just ask if somebody is going to Finland and maybe you will be lucky as I was. Few tips: Good weather helps On Friday and weekend plenty of people are going to Finland and back Summer is prime time Looking clean is useful Absolutely majority of boat owners don't wake up before 10 am. Have your ID/ passport ready.

Good spot to head south from Alta. People can go longer distances to Finland/Sweden. Summer, male traveller

Male, Sunday evening in summer, going south to Sweden. Mostly local traffic, but this is a place where people pass from Norway/Finland driving down to Sweden. Also a gasstation and a store nearby. Didn't need to camp because an elderly couple took me late in the evening to Sweden, but I think there is plenty of opportunities to camp in the forest.

Hitchhiking to Chisinau, Moldova. Perfect spot to Moldova. Write 'Chisinau' to your sign and just wait here👍 I got a ride pretty close to the capital and the border crossing went easily: they just asked one question about declaration. I'm from Finland so I don't know if that has something to do with it. Actually one of my friends had a problem at the border and he recommended to book a hostel or have some proof that you're really staying in Moldova, so I did that just in case. Fast traffic, some space for cars to stop. Luckily I got a ride with a local man working in Finland heading back home to Kuressaare and he had no problem taking me all the way to Roomassaare sadam to catch a ferry across to Abruka. He even showed me around the city a bit with his car. I managed to arrive to the harbour two hours ahead of my time, but luckily the captain accepted my story of hitchhiking here and took me across with the earlier ferry.

Great spot, both by the road as well as asking around in this parking lot, lots of trucks and mainly getting fuel or food, got a ride offer to Finland within 10 minutes and within 40 minutes got truck going a long distance to south, probably best spot for long distance rides anywhere around here

A wise man once said these words about hitchhiking which have been ringing in my head ever since: "It is not popular in Finland." Anyways, it's technically a nice spot with loads of space for cars to pull over, many of which turn west onto the highway. Maybe you'll have more luck than we did.

Direction: Finland. I stood in the middle of the 2 ramps on the gravel and got a ride very quickly. Amazing views too.

After more than 3 hours I accepted the first ride that took me somewhere between Lakselv and Karasjok. Don't be like me! Only accept rides to at least Karasjok. There is nothing in between. After 2 more hours in the middle of nowhere I hitched a ride back north, and took the route Alta->Kautokeino->Finland Disclaimer: it was a sunday, so you might be more lucky on a weekday.

Towards Finland. Speed limit is 110 but you are visable from a good distance. There's a bus stop, so place to stop for drivers and shelter for you. More traffic than the onramp near the town

Towards Finland. In theory it should be a good spot. In practice there was hardly any traffic. After 1,5 hours I walked to the next onramp (15min walk) and got a ride in 15 mins.

Really hard spot!!!! But one truck give me a 2 day ride to Lahti. Hill, double closing line high curb. I thought I would never get out of here. Yet in less than 30 minutes I was already on my way to Finland. Incredible! Thank you P!

Great spot, a lot of Finns coming back from Sweden with snuff. Cars go cca 30kmh, plenty of time to decide if they wanna take you. Got a ride to Rovaniemi Santa Claus village in 30 minutes, dont forget to change your clock one hour forward once you arrive in Finland :)

Not the best spot to get in direction to Kautokeino, all cars ride to the Nordkapp and people who drove in the direction more to the west (Kautokeino) didn't stop and don't understand hitchhiking. One guy from Switzerland saved us after 6 hours, he took us out of this Saami shithole back to Finland. However some people were offering us to ride with them to the north (Nordkapp) or Alta. - One of the worst experience. At least stuff members on the gas station were nice and helpful. More than half of the cars were German Caravans or Norwegian in Teslas riding alone and no one stops, even during heavy rain, the evening in 8°C and same in the morning.

Lot of cars from Norway which were shopping in the Finland, but no one stops, saved us man from sweden during heavy rain.

Lot of cars from Finland or Estonia. Great spot to get a ride to Tallin. Lower traffic but no trucks, only cars.

Got lucky with an estonian truck going all the way to finland from here but otherwise I would've went to the next splitroad just few meters forward from the busstop. Good visib but high speeds.

As the IKEA next to this spot is the only one in the anywhere around northern Sweden and Finland, this is a very good place to get long distance rides.

This is a good place to hitchhike to Finland since a lot of norwegian are going to shopping in Kilpisjärvi
