Next to petrol station but otherwise don't recommend if trying to go south, most long distance traffic doesn't go throughhere. Had much better luck at the roundabout 15 mins south.

2 hitchers, got a lift towards Oulu

Lot of traffic is Norwegian border shoppers going but to Norway, took longer to find a ride south. Got a lovely trucker after 45 mins though

Maybe this is a new rest place, maybe just unused, but there was very little traffic. After maybe an hour, I found a car going to Haparanda and hitched from there. During the hour waiting, I have seen like 5 cars stop here, so not great. If stuck here, try to get at least a short lift.

I did not really like this place. I tried hitchhiking on the center isle, on the road connecting from the right, and then directly on the main road, which worked for me. But it was a Polish guy, and I'm not sure how long it would take without him. The traffic light changes fast, and the road south has three lanes for three directions, with the one going straight in the middle.

Everybody is going to Sinettä and Rovaniemi. There is a space to pull over at the bus stop, and cars are slow. I got a ride within a few minutes.

This could be the best spot for north since all cars pass through here. It's 50 zone and uphill so they go slow. No roof on the bus stop so in the rain could be kinda sad.

I would recommend this busstop spot for going north since this is where all the passerbys funnel through. It's after an uphill on a 50 zone so the cars are not going too fast either. No roof though.

There are many people from Oulu going to Tornio at all times of the year but idk about how good it would be at night. This is also in the Bible belt of Finland so there is higher likelihood of running into a gooder person who picks you up. Also many Norwegian tourists in the summer who could take you straight to kilpisjärvi or norway

Unless the weather is unbearable I wouldn't suggest asking people inside if you're going north since only southeners stop here. I caught me a ride to the shell 2km north and got a ride instantly. Honestly even with bad weather it's better on the bus stop

I think it's a very good place to get to Helsinki. Many drivers going there. First people (and the only ones💀) we asked got us to Helsinki.

Tried other spots of Tampere trying to go to Helsinki but no luck after like 2 hours. Idk if it was luck but I just feel like this was the best spot since we got it almost instantly. Tampere road infrastructure is hellish so I think this might be one of the more coherent places to get south.

Drivers go slow and the bus stop has a roof. Intersection guarantees maximum amount of traffic. A local nice older lady took us to Pulkkila which was a great place for going further.

It's a bus stop kinda too much in the city. Mostly city drivers and the spot is really unintuitive to pick hikers when going south. We waited kinda long and shit was hopeless but randomly a former military buddy of mine recognized me, picked us up and took us to Rantsila. Could be good for going north to find a better spot but tbh I would just rather take the bus to Ii or Liminka and try there

Most drivers go either long way south or north so potentially a good place. Me and my friend ate lunch on the bench of the ABC outside and asked drivers for a ride(granted we are finnish so that probably helped tremendously with trust and shit) eventually two Toni's took us to Tampere. 5/5 loved the place

Waited for 1,5hours with a sign to Turku before giving up and taking an overpriced bus. Maybe most of them were going to helsinki but there was a lot of cars and it was a good place to stop. My experience about hitchhiking in finland is that eather you get lucky and find a ride in less than 15 minutes or you stand there for hours..

basically that’s the spot for the ferry to talinn i have tried to find a boat before with asking marinas but mostly in the time that i got it was not doable, 100%better with ferry it cost around 40 so a week of waiting will have cost me the same plus it’s around 20h to 1 day of sailing and u need to have good skills, soooooo you can try but ferry could be very useful if u got like 2 days in helsinki before talinn good luck 👍🏼

totally agree, perfect spot to helsinki from tampere lots of cars and plenty of space to stop place yourself before the bus station good luck then :) (kebab in the other way is really good btw)

Cars are pretty slow, and there is a little space to pull over. You can be seen from a distance, and cars are going to Pello and Finland. I got a ride pretty fast, considering the frequency of cars up here in the north.

i think that things have changed since 2012 ahahahah that spot is really good bc spaces for cars to stop and they are getting slow fully recommend it to go finland or hamaranda good luck it will work 100% (use a sign!!) 🤠🤠🤠

definitely not a really good spot if u try to go north like finland recommend to find a cars that can get u to the next gas station (like just hitchhike with no sign and ask for the next gas station) good luck luleå is a bit hard to leave 🫡

I would say its amazing spot because cars drive so slow and there is a lot of space to stop. But i was trying to get to Oulu early at morning like 8. So ig there wasnt a lot of shopper going back to Finland but eventually one lady took me.

A better hitchhiking spot probably doesn’t exist. It’s the entrance to the road that connects north to south Sweden. Tourists, locals, workers, really anyone going to Sweden has to take this E4 road. Stick your thumb out, or make sign if you really want to be specific, because this will help you get far into Sweden, wherever it may be. It might even be better if you take this road if you are planning to go to Kiruna or/and Norway, since the road from Töre has more traffic then the ones in Finland and the Swedish road next to the Torneå river. ==> highly recommend!

Do you want to go to Finland and have experience of the lifetime? If yes, this is a place for you. Stand by the gate to the pier, there is only one and every boat owner need to come through it. Now just ask if somebody is going to Finland and maybe you will be lucky as I was. Few tips: Good weather helps On Friday and weekend plenty of people are going to Finland and back Summer is prime time Looking clean is useful Absolutely majority of boat owners don't wake up before 10 am. Have your ID/ passport ready.

Male, Sunday evening in summer, going south to Sweden. Mostly local traffic, but this is a place where people pass from Norway/Finland driving down to Sweden. Also a gasstation and a store nearby. Didn't need to camp because an elderly couple took me late in the evening to Sweden, but I think there is plenty of opportunities to camp in the forest.

Hitchhiking to Chisinau, Moldova. Perfect spot to Moldova. Write 'Chisinau' to your sign and just wait here👍 I got a ride pretty close to the capital and the border crossing went easily: they just asked one question about declaration. I'm from Finland so I don't know if that has something to do with it. Actually one of my friends had a problem at the border and he recommended to book a hostel or have some proof that you're really staying in Moldova, so I did that just in case. Fast traffic, some space for cars to stop. Luckily I got a ride with a local man working in Finland heading back home to Kuressaare and he had no problem taking me all the way to Roomassaare sadam to catch a ferry across to Abruka. He even showed me around the city a bit with his car. I managed to arrive to the harbour two hours ahead of my time, but luckily the captain accepted my story of hitchhiking here and took me across with the earlier ferry.

Great spot, both by the road as well as asking around in this parking lot, lots of trucks and mainly getting fuel or food, got a ride offer to Finland within 10 minutes and within 40 minutes got truck going a long distance to south, probably best spot for long distance rides anywhere around here

A wise man once said these words about hitchhiking which have been ringing in my head ever since: "It is not popular in Finland." Anyways, it's technically a nice spot with loads of space for cars to pull over, many of which turn west onto the highway. Maybe you'll have more luck than we did.

Direction: Finland. I stood in the middle of the 2 ramps on the gravel and got a ride very quickly. Amazing views too.

After more than 3 hours I accepted the first ride that took me somewhere between Lakselv and Karasjok. Don't be like me! Only accept rides to at least Karasjok. There is nothing in between. After 2 more hours in the middle of nowhere I hitched a ride back north, and took the route Alta->Kautokeino->Finland Disclaimer: it was a sunday, so you might be more lucky on a weekday.

Towards Finland. Speed limit is 110 but you are visable from a good distance. There's a bus stop, so place to stop for drivers and shelter for you. More traffic than the onramp near the town

Towards Finland. In theory it should be a good spot. In practice there was hardly any traffic. After 1,5 hours I walked to the next onramp (15min walk) and got a ride in 15 mins.

Really hard spot!!!! But one truck give me a 2 day ride to Lahti. Hill, double closing line high curb. I thought I would never get out of here. Yet in less than 30 minutes I was already on my way to Finland. Incredible! Thank you P!
