Many many many cars towards Cannes and Marseille.
But very tricky to get there DO NOT CLIMB FROM THE EASTERN SIDE.
There is an open gate for service vehicles on the western side. Got there from Allianz Riviera by going to the gas station north of there, crossed the roundabout towards the river and walked until the toll booth.

A lot of cars are heading towards Nice with slow enough speed. Enough space to stop a car or small vans.

Accessible à pied depuis l’extérieur de la station. On a demandé au premier groupe que l’on a croisé et qui nous a amené à Gènes ! Incroyable !

The spot is not too bad but there is actually very few cars there. My advice is to ask to go the next gas station at Isle-d'Abeau. However I got a ride from Jules to Chambéry !

Attention peu de voiture en stationnement dans le direction sud ( la station service est de l’autre côté). Nous avons finis par nous poser à la sortie de la station avec un panneau. Et là nous avons trouvé la pépite qui nous a fait une grand partie du trajet.

Not as much traffic as expected, but there was some. After 30minutes of waiting some guy in his 20ties stopped and picked us up. We were supposed to go only 10km to the next gas station but we've spent 3 hours together seeing Montagne and Monaco because he wanted to show us around. Great guy. We left off at the first city in Italy because he was apparently going there to buy like 30 packs of cigarettes cause they are way cheaper. We ate s baguette together and went further.

Stood there for 2 hours trying to get to Italy but no luck. People were going slow due to roundabout and there was a place to stop, but everyone always seems to be thing about toll station right before the entrance so hardly anybody cared about us. We resigned and took bus that got us to Nicea and to the higway

If you want to cross Cannes and Nicea for god's sake don't go just a next gas station from there. THERES NO gas station's on highway till the end of Nicea and getting out of these two cities back on the highway is very hard.
Many people were very happy that we were asking around for a ride. Plenty of cars coming through, most of them to Cannes or Nicea though.

There was not that much traffic and even if someone was actually going they were usually picking the directions of Montpellier and we were going to Italy's border. Also people seemed to not even look in our direction. But after some time a lovely lady with her elderly mom stopped and they took us to the next gas station on the highway.
Also the guard told us to leave while we were staying right after toll station which was unfortunate as there was a lot of space to park

I believe it's the best place to cross the Montpellier without going into it. There's a lot of traffic in many directions. We've been asking everybody around and many people were going to the next city 60 km away or Lyon, fewer to Aix-en-Provence but it's the best way to Italy and we were heading to it. It's kinda hard to navigate on the map what's the best way to Italy cause there is a lot of roads crossing each other after Montpellier.
We 2 guys got picked up by a father and son from Germany that were supposed to go to Monaco but on our way there the son got so angry he had no cigarettes left that he broke the car (tear out both the mirrors, started to throw things into the car) and told us to leave

Stood there right after the toll station. Cars going to Montpellier might have a problem to stop for you cause they need to cross the way of people on the right. Police came in 15 minutes and told us we need to move before the toll station.
We stood right before the toll station with a sign pointing to people. I believe it's best to just stay on the little brick island between road's lines. Trying to pick someone from roads corner might be trickier cause many people pointing to the right on toll station are going the direction of Spain and we wanted to go Italy. After 20 minutes a nice 20years old solo lady invited us to her car (it was a technogirl speaking no English but loving techno)

Stood there for an hour. Two people stopped to pick us up for 5km to the next town but we refused. Then an elderly man stopped, he spoke no English, and took us to Narbonne right to the entrance to motorway.
We were two guys and the road is pretty busy.

Here we learnt that French highways tend to have these weird places to just park and go sightseeing for a little. There was not much of a traffic, maybe 5-8 cars coming per hour there. We tried to stay before the entrance with a sign but cars go to fast.
Sadly it's hard to find a better spot if you want to go by highway. Maybe an expressway near here would be a better option.
Then switched to asking there if someone could lift us to carcassone. It was already dark and the last person I asked was a mother with two children and she agreed to take us (we already had a tent stood up). It was a blessing as we really wanted to see carcassone while going to sleep.

We came here from a different spot. This is a roundabout but it's very wide and there's a lot of space for car to stop. 2, guys, a solo late took us near Narbonne.

Tried for an hour to go to Narbonne but no luck. A lot of cars going through but the only place to stop is on a pretty width entrance to fastway. Also a lot of cars might be going few different directions

Really bad spot for the cars to stop their, but a lot of cars going in. We started with a sign Nice, but ppl told us you should first go to Aix and then go to Nice from then.
Finally, a guy took us to Aubagne.

Biggest parking for trucks I've ever seen, maybe 200-300 of them. Every single one was going to France or Spain so it was s perfect spot to catch someone that direction. But we were going further into Italy
There was mostly traffic from trucks but also a few cars going through. We've been waiting there for 2 hours asking around and caught a 300km ride somewhere around 23:00 by a guy that drove a Porsche there for some rich kids from Monaco
For me the best spot in that neighborhood to go hop on the highway

Been left there by Italians living in the area that told us many France people go to this station because the gasoline is cheap. And they were right, foreigners were there, but like maybe 5 cars per hour around 15:00. Eventually after an hour guy took us to France but we had to pay.
We were 2 guys

In a normal country for hitchiking it would be a perfect spot. But in Spain we waited 3 hours till some Italian guys took us. My mate was even talking Spanish and asking people around the gas station but everyone seemed to be afraid to take hitchikers. Been asking around gas station, staying with a sign on a bus stop near gas station and also trying to get someone on the entrance to highway and not much luck. Police came and said that we got to leave the highway's entrance. A much more traffic to Barcelona though so maybe it would be better and we were trying to go to France

The spot is alright, with a lot of space for cars to stop. Iwas a bit afraid for my first hitchhiking experience in Spain as I read that it would be significantly more difficult than in France. I was on my way to a village close to Girona which is a bit of an awkward way from Puigcerda so I wrote Ripoll and Vic on my cardboard. Eventually someone stopped and said he would take me to the place where the road to Ripoll starts. After talking a bit it turned out he would be going all the way to Girona in the afternoon after having lunch with his wife. I had to kill a few hours but was very lucky with my direct ride.

Spot alright, rather quiet though on a Thursday morning. I had a sign saying Mons, France and asked the people that were there. In the end an older lady stopped and brought me to a petrol station about 100 km before Paris.

We were trying to go toward Zaragoza. Took us a while to realize that wasn't going to happen. Most people are going either to France or Barcelona. Around lunchtime we decided to accept a ride to Barcelona and ask a drop off before the highway exit. But by that time there were almost no cars coming through, and the ones that did weren't going to Barcelona.
One truck driver accepted to drive one person, but we were two and wanted to stick together. In the end we took a bus to Figueres and then a train to Barcelona.

Last gas station in France before the border. I wouldn't recommend to stop to the border. I would recommend to have at least few sentences in spanish and portuguese to ask driver, it makes a huge difference (see hitchwiki.org)
I luckily got a ride to Burgos. end of august

Not so busy, we tried to ask people for Nice / Marseille direction. A Swiss older couple on Tesla took us before Nice, above Monaco. From there it was easier because we were finally in France. Good luck.

banger, i find this one reliable to go far into france direction reims. heading northwest, don't bother taking rides shorter than aire du haut-koenigsbourg. there's plenty of ppl going long distances, especially luxembourg/belgium. also loads of german cars.

traffic is not crazy, but this is still my pick of choice to get to england from france. i've had varying luck ranging from rides in 2h to, this time, getting there at 18:30 and only getting a lift at 10:00, with only 4h spent sleeping. i strongly recommend asking around, maybe with a sign.
not huge amounts of traffic but very solid proportion of UK cars (seasonally dependent). i've found that many english cars can be downright mean and are often full, but don't get discouraged! there are also some nice ones worth waiting for.
easy enough to give up and go to calais if you're in a rush.
indoor bits close at 22:00 but i believe the one opposite stays open.
someone called the cops and staff lady vouched for me so they apologised and left me alone
