I stopped there today, i guess you can try a but everywhere 'cause it's not fast and busy but here looks line the best place, visibility, space to stop and even a little parking to turn back. Ok it's before the turn left to eymoutiers but no care, after this spot there is no much space and the cars starts to accelerate

couldn't agree more with the review below. this really sucked towards switzerland, most ppl were going east to the french alps. ended up taking a lift to the tolls 5km further and had much better luck there. it is however a useful stop to ask for a big piece of cardboard to make a sign for the toll, the bigger the better - staff kindly helped out.

traffic is not crazy, but this is still my pick of choice to get to england from france. i've had varying luck ranging from rides in 2h to, this time, getting there at 18:30 and only getting a lift at 10:00, with only 4h spent sleeping. i strongly recommend asking around, maybe with a sign. not huge amounts of traffic but very solid proportion of UK cars (seasonally dependent). i've found that many english cars can be downright mean and are often full, but don't get discouraged! there are also some nice ones worth waiting for. easy enough to give up and go to calais if you're in a rush. indoor bits close at 22:00 but i believe the one opposite stays open. someone called the cops and staff lady vouched for me so they apologised and left me alone

your average highway service station, not huge traffic, fair bit of english cars

did not feel very nice bcs you can only hop in as the drivers pay at the toll, there is no rest area. also clearly illegal. this also means drivers might feel like they need to help you, so good to get ahead to a better spot not far. hitch at the ticket booths where they have to lower their window :) avoid the automatic gates where cars can just drive through. there is a big highway security building right next to it that seemed inactive and did not bother me even though i lingered for a while before thumbing. also, there is a pedestrian underpass connecting the toll gates so you don't need to actually walk across the motorway if it's really busy.

Easy ride out to A1 toward north and Belgium , some traffic and trafic light for cars to stop. Picked up in 20 with a cardboard that said A1. Should be easy to get north once you are on a highway stop

Nice spot to go to Montbéliard, cars see you from far away, they are slow because of a traffic light and they can easily stop because there are parking lots, recommend

Traveling alone. Tried both sign and thumb+sign. Came all the way here from Lyon center. It was NOT worth it. Tons of traffic, but very few cars going towards Geneva (or they simply did not want to take me) Early in the morning it probably works better because many people work near Geneva and live in Lyon

close to highway leaving lyon in all directions. Better to stay before the stoplight where many cars stop, otherwise cars go too fast and can't stop.

spent 30 minutes at this spot standing by the advert at the edge of the roundabout, got taken directly to Bordeaux. Not the best spot as drivers don't have much time to consider their decision, but should serve to take you south out of Nantes. We took the 4 to Bourdonniéres and walked there.

banger, i find this one reliable to go far into france direction reims. heading northwest, don't bother taking rides shorter than aire du haut-koenigsbourg. there's plenty of ppl going long distances, especially luxembourg/belgium. also loads of german cars.

Not ideal stopping space, there is on the other side to go to Andorra, but to get into France less so, but it wasnt busy so I got a lift fairly quickly

I just landed in Geneva Airport and tried to get BlaBlaBus to Grenoble, but it got canceled :/ So I just found this spot on Google maps and decided to give it a try. There's enough space for cars to pull over, but not for trucks. And the road turns directly to the highway. A lot of French drivers, who work in Geneva and live in France go this way. Took some time but got a great company on the way and it was easier once in France.

Spoke to people getting out of Decathlon to get back to Fort-de-France. An employee getting off shift took us

Stood right behind bridge to head north-bound. Plan was originally to hitchhike to Fort-de-France, but driver suggested to take ferry. Cost 7€ but was money very well spent. Arriving in the capital by boat was lovely, recommendation :)

[Young male solo-traveller] It's not ideal because hitchhiking is prohibited at toll booths in France (the police won't give you a fine tho), but I was fortunate and got picked up after 5min. Cars can stop at the rest area to pick you up, and you can also ask drivers there.

traffic mostly going to switzerland via basel, however i can't think of another option for france. can be a bit of a wait to get someone who goes at least to belfort and can drop you on the porte d'alsace. it's worth the wait. male, early 30s, alone

Great place towards Pontarlier. Preferably wait for a ride to France and not Le Locle, from then on its not difficult. Enough space to pull over, this spot seems much better than everything I've seen while walking from the train station.

May favourite starting spot to get out of the area to the Netherlands/Belgium/France. So far has worked out for me fairly quickly every single time. This review is super late, but I was there in May in the afternoon and found folks going my direction in half an hour by asking around. It only took half an hour because they wanted to finish their meal (which, totally fair.) I think the finding itself only took about 10 minutes.
