People are definitely friendly (although far from a 100% stop rate). The problem is there are very few cars, especially in the direction of the "Instagram tree" where there is only one house. This road kind of sucked for getting back the the marina, although by international standards it was still fairly good. Basically the problem is the locals are going not very far so smile without stopping, not realising that that two minute lift to the road to the marina would actually be kind of helpful while lugging a ton of supplies in the baking sun. They also somtimes realise you are a sailor and don't stop because they are not going to the gas station, even though a lift just to the turn off would be super helpful. There's also a couple of wannabe taxi drivers lurking about who expect $30 for a lift the to marina they are going to anyway.I did this route a couple of times, eventually someone would stop, but by marquesas standards this bit sucked for hitchiking.
Work under the assumption you will walk some/all of it.

The road between the only two villages of fatu hiva is beutiful. The one problem is basically nobody drives it. Be here weirdly early (like an hour before sunrise like the locals do) to start your hitch after that the road is empty. If the one or two cars that drive past don't stop for you or demand $50 like the one did this afternoon, you'll be walking for hours before the next car. Didn't even need to stick my thumb out before I was offered a lift. Beware that the airport is an hours drive from the town, you do not want to walk this, and with no houses here the second the flight arrives you need to be on the road to start hitchiking. A good place if you want to go towards Italy, France and Germany or the Czech Republic. We were heading towards Budapest and we had some difficulties to find someone who was driving in that direction. But a lot can depend on what time you hitchhiking. On the plus side, a lot of trucks and quite a lot of passenger car traffic at the gas station. A good place to stop/accommodate. I tried asking around at the gas station but all the cars were full or we're going towards Salamanca. There are a lot of truck drivers and foreigners (France, UK, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland...) at the gas station, but many are families. After I decided moving to the entrance of the highway, a Spanish guy exited from the highway, and promised me to take me to Valladolid (my sign).
