Not that much traffic going there, lots of walking and waiting in the heat - most rides that took us just took us to the next village where the waiting game started anew. Couple of hours later though a van driver picked us up and brought us very close to Tbilisi!rating: 3/5, ride: 146 km ←

Direction: Akhaltsihke (east)Mostly local rides, it might take a while to cover substantial distance (took us almost 10 rides to Akhaltsihke.
Public bus number 12 can get you there for cents (tap your card, Yandex Maps app can show the route).
The other marked spot is right in the city.

How come noone reviewed this place yet. Its along the only east-west highway and at a round about. So everyone who is going everywhere is there and driving slow with lots of little cabins with vendors where people can pull in so easily and you have food for the worst case. 1 Minute with a Batumi sign and I was in a car in Kutaisi direction.rating: 5/5, wait: 1 min, ride: 128 km ←

Didnt really try to be honest cause this street is just chaos and stress. For 1 Lari take Bus number 1 up to Surami there is the perfect place to either Tbilisi or Kutaisi/Batumi.rating: 2/5

Getting out towards north is difficult. Theoretically a good spot but people didnt stop for 40 minutes. So for 3 Lari I hopped on a Marshrutka to Tbilisi that let me off in Khashuri (which is also not a great place)rating: 3/5, wait: 40 min

Stand close to the coffee stop but not too close. A bit behind so people can see and think about you already. After 10 min a group of people checking their car there for a few minutes spotted and discussed me during their wait and decided to take me to Borjomi. Loooots of room for cars to pull over.rating: 5/5, wait: 10 min, ride: 39 km ↙

Take the bus there, you can check it on G Maps. Its best to go to Armenia because it has no inner city traffic. Literally took me 1 minute. Lots of space for the driver and they are still slow due to a traffic light a few meters before the stop. Sign to Yerevan got me to Marneuli.rating: 5/5, wait: 1 min, ride: 25 km ↙

All cars going to Yerevan from at least Tbilisi come through here. That is why the spot is great. But it doesnt mean there are many cars in total. Walk the road a bit to find a good spot. Took me 30 min with an Armenian driver but there were like 10 cars per minute so be prepared for a little wait.rating: 5/5, wait: 30 min, ride: 168 km ↓

Its a border town so everyone stops at the street to eat. The road is one big parking lot. Super spot. 4 colourful wanderers, we camped in Areni floodgate and came here at 11am brought by a friend's car to find a direct ride to Iran. After 5 minutes playing music and singing by smiley food vendors, two armenian trucks stopped for us and drove all the way to Agarak, which border i really missed since 2 years ago.We had signs to Meghri but they were really useless, as everyone would understand we're going as much south as possible. I'm in Samuel Hostel in Agarak, Iran will see me again in winter, going back to Georgia tomorrow!

We crossed from Georgia to Russia on a Monday morning in July 2024, then back on a Sunday afternoon. Some things for hitchhikers to note:-It can be cold and rainy even in summer, be prepared.
-Line of cars were backed up on both sides all the way to the borders. It's very far from one border to another, but the traffic was so bad that it was faster to walk. For the love of all that's holy, if the traffic is backed up all the way to customs, WALK!!!! You are SO lucky, you're the only person who is not tied to waiting for a car. On the return trip we stupidly decided to stay with our ride and we spent over 9 hours in the line. Just get out and walk, please.
-We'd heard you couldn't cross the border walking, but nobody stopped us on the Georgian side. You just need a car to cross customs on the Russian side, after that, say thanks to your ride, and get out and walk..
-There are two tunnels. At the first tunnel we got in a car going to Vladikavkaz, but ended up sitting in line for hours, we should have walked.
-We ended up getting out and walking after a while, but were stopped within sight of the Russian checkpoint, so we got in another car at the front of the line. Probably saved an hour or two by just getting out and walking ten minutes.
-If you choose to walk the tunnels, wear a facemask, the pollution inside is quite heavy, but you can cross in 15 minutes or so, so it's doable. Ideally have a flashlight too, as tunnels are quite dim, and there are a lot of broken bottles on the ground. Make sure to walk on the right of traffic against tunnel wall,NOT in the middle, as cheaters cut the line and zoom around very recklessly.
-Go to the bathroom BEFORE you cross. There are portapoties on the bridge, but they have poop piled up since the time of the tsars.
-Exchange any money you need before crossing. In Russia, foreign bank cards don't work, and you can only exchange money at banks for very bad rates.

April 2022. After a whole year travelling across Turkey and learning how to become a nomad while waiting for Iranian border to re-open as well as escaping pandemic, after a whole winter in Georgia. Finally i came again to Doğubeyazıt and got a relaxing ride by a truck. I was so excited and speechless that i even fell asleep on the way to Gürbülak. You have to leave the car and walk through the border, that's quicker. I found the same truck on the other side and they hosted me in Marand.Let the safest, most welcoming and freeminded population guide you across Persia!

Right after the roundabout direction Poti - Kobuleti - Batumi. There might not be plenty of space for the cars to stop right after the roundabout, but this is Georgia and they always find the way :) . Nikortsminda is a historical village in Racha, Georgia (country) with XI century church in a village center, near a village are cave ,,Sakinule" and cave swimming pool cave, the river originates it's river ,,Sharaula". Also there are ,,Shaori" reservoir and place ,,Leknari" for two days hiking. Hitch Hiking is very easy in Nikortsminda, almost every point are good for stop a car and go to Oni or go to Batumi or Tbilisi through Terjola.―Anonymous, October 2015

Excellent place for going to Georgia! Waited here for a ridiculous 2min until a car took me directly to the border, from where the first car took me straight to Tbilisi. Cars are really slow here and I assess the overall hitchability as insanely great! There is public transport from Vladikavkaz but I forgot which minibuses go there. Ask people or add it here.―Anonymous, May 2015
