Took me 7 different ride to get to tbilissi. 10 hour streight of hitchhike. Got a couple of ride right on the side of the hwy, georgia is pretty friendly

Excellent spot for leaving the city. We went to Batumi in one car without waiting for too long

Horrible place to hitchhike. There were not a lot of cars, people are rude and there is no shade at all.

it was already getting dark, but a young woman picked us up and drove us to the central bus station in Kutaisi (there were four of us)

Waited for close to two hours there with and without a sign reading ‘Kutaisi’ in both languages. Not much room for cars to pull over but many do (to pick up their relatives etc) and buses as well. Not much traffic but Matshukas come every 30min or so in the worst case. Eventually got a dude to take me to Khashuri

Have to agree with the previous comment. Hard to HH out going North. Tried this stretch for like 15min before going at the next junction 1km or so father down the road. I’d advise doing the same but it’s really not perfect either. There’s less room for cars to stop at the junction but most cars coming from the city center didn’t continue through towards Khashuri and there you also get cars coming from Bakuriani.

Easy spot out of the roundabout for a ride towards Borjomi/Tbilissi. There was quite a lot of traffic when I was there, with place to pull over + as it’s slightly uphill cars don’t drive too fast. There’s a bus stop there so don’t be surprised to see ppl wait. They didn’t mind that I hhed from there.

As good a spot as any. I walked North with my thumb up and someone eventually stopped on their way to Akhakalaki. The road is NASTY (especially after it’s rained) so don’t be surprised if your driver takes a shortcut through the fields lol There’s also a bus stop along the way, you can wait there if you feel like it :)

Good spot going North or West. Going to Brookline I initially waited opposite the gas station so as to be seen by all drivers going North or West (the western route is longer but faster) but the worker there told me to focus on cars going West. Apparently the driver going North stop after a village or two. Anyway I found a ride 5 min after relocating, to Akhalsikhe.

Some random offered to take me to Sulda However it’s not a particularly good spot, I’d recommend walking to the city anyway

Friendly people but there are very few cars going down the valley. You might have better link in the morning when workers go to the city

Got a crazy ride all the way to Batumi with a stop in a random mountain village.

Easy pick up to Tbilisi (and to Truso Valley a few days before)

Good spot for Kacheti direction, but 100 meters down the road might be even better, because there is a traffic light and a gas station

Cars have to slow down here, because of crossing the tracks and there’s a gas station right next to it.

Not a perfect place for a car to stop, but we stopped a car right away (witch went to Tbilisi - not our destination) and than the next car stopped and took us to Batumi.

Came out of Oscar restaurant after two beers and stopped a car to Poti right away. Enough space for a car to stop..

guy dopted us off here, cars going fast but we got a ride to senaki in max 30 min

If you plan to go down the valley on foot, it might be worth to ask somebody for a ride to save yourself a few kilometers of a gravel road

After asking around in the village, some folks were willing to take us with them to Akhmeta. Younger people tend to speak a little english here.

A nightmare on paper but eventually a great place because people here are great. A truck driver picked me up within minutes (it was dark already) all the way to Kars and offered to take me to Georgia/Azebaijan (which is eventually my destination but I wanted to visit Kars). Anyway, as good a spot as any and if you end up there you won’t have much choice <3

there were four of us, and we caught a ride very quickly. we were standing there holding a sign that said “Gjumri,” heading toward Georgia, and a nice man gave us a ride to Vanadzor

June 2026 : no problem at all to get out of Georgia by walk. Guards said nothing, I even asked if I can walk and they said yes. Just pass by the duty free building on the right. Guards will ask if you have a Russian visa. Personally I got a tourist visa back in Paris before starting my trip. You can basically walk the whole way to the Russian side BUT the tunnels are dangerous IMO. There is kind of a sidewalk but it's very narrow and you can fall from it in the total dark so I preferred to hitchhike, a Georgian truck driver took me until after the two tunnels. It's up to you but don't take any risks please 🥺

Perfect spot to go Trabzon, ok traffic and lot of visibility and room to stop for drivers. If you are lucky you might as well get a lift to Georgia I believe. Thanks to Ibrahim and Oussama (?). My precedent drivers helped to find a drive but not that successfully lol, too bad

He drove us 30 minutes extra to give us a good first impression of Georgia.

Got ride towards Kutaisi, but left us on highway. Apparently it is common to hitchhike on highways in Georgia.

Cars go a bit fast and my driver had to turn around to pick me up the second try. Otherwise good spot for going to Georgia. After 20 minutes picked up to Ardesen.

Its a border town so everyone stops at the street to eat. The road is one big parking lot. Walk the main road, not the one near the boardwalk into Georgia direction and find a free parking spot for people to stop. 5 minutes took me to Kemalpasa and I had a sign that said Gürcistan.

First car picked us up. It's the kind of remoteness where that can happen. Girl from Georgia on a cross-country odyssey was shunpiking to Laramie.

Super spot. 4 colourful wanderers, we camped in Areni floodgate and came here at 11am brought by a friend's car to find a direct ride to Iran. After 5 minutes playing music and singing by smiley food vendors, two armenian trucks stopped for us and drove all the way to Agarak, which border i really missed since 2 years ago. We had signs to Meghri but they were really useless, as everyone would understand we're going as much south as possible. I'm in Samuel Hostel in Agarak, Iran will see me again in winter, going back to Georgia tomorrow!

We crossed from Georgia to Russia on a Monday morning in July 2024, then back on a Sunday afternoon. Some things for hitchhikers to note: -It can be cold and rainy even in summer, be prepared. -Line of cars were backed up on both sides all the way to the borders. It's very far from one border to another, but the traffic was so bad that it was faster to walk. For the love of all that's holy, if the traffic is backed up all the way to customs, WALK!!!! You are SO lucky, you're the only person who is not tied to waiting for a car. On the return trip we stupidly decided to stay with our ride and we spent over 9 hours in the line. Just get out and walk, please. -We'd heard you couldn't cross the border walking, but nobody stopped us on the Georgian side. You just need a car to cross customs on the Russian side, after that, say thanks to your ride, and get out and walk.. -There are two tunnels. At the first tunnel we got in a car going to Vladikavkaz, but ended up sitting in line for hours, we should have walked. -We ended up getting out and walking after a while, but were stopped within sight of the Russian checkpoint, so we got in another car at the front of the line. Probably saved an hour or two by just getting out and walking ten minutes. -If you choose to walk the tunnels, wear a facemask, the pollution inside is quite heavy, but you can cross in 15 minutes or so, so it's doable. Ideally have a flashlight too, as tunnels are quite dim, and there are a lot of broken bottles on the ground. Make sure to walk on the right of traffic against tunnel wall,NOT in the middle, as cheaters cut the line and zoom around very recklessly. -Go to the bathroom BEFORE you cross. There are portapoties on the bridge, but they have poop piled up since the time of the tsars. -Exchange any money you need before crossing. In Russia, foreign bank cards don't work, and you can only exchange money at banks for very bad rates.

Perfect to be seen by drivers and very good to stop for any kind of car or truck. Ifyou want to go to georgia or artvin

Undoubtedly a crappy place to hitchhike with nowhere to pull over but they don’t seem to care in Georgia. busy road and got a ride almost immediately

April 2022. After a whole year travelling across Turkey and learning how to become a nomad while waiting for Iranian border to re-open as well as escaping pandemic, after a whole winter in Georgia. Finally i came again to Doğubeyazıt and got a relaxing ride by a truck. I was so excited and speechless that i even fell asleep on the way to Gürbülak. You have to leave the car and walk through the border, that's quicker. I found the same truck on the other side and they hosted me in Marand. Let the safest, most welcoming and freeminded population guide you across Persia!

Waited 20 minutes. 4 cars stopped and the 4th was going where I needed to. Georgia has great hitchhiking culture!
