Not a great spot. I stood on the grass just beyond the bus stop. There was space to pull over and ok traffic flow, but nobody stopped. The cars are coming in bursts due to the traffic lights and also while trying to merge. In the afternoon 4pm -5:30 pm there was a lot of traffic on the big road and it was a traffic jam, so I went down and hitchiked the hard shoulder of the road after an hour of trying the slip road. 20 mins later a truck stopped and took my to the edge of town. Not the best experience but whatever. The driver was nice and speaks English. There is a busstop right here if you cave. I think it was 700isk.

Just below the foot bridge is a big section of hard shoulder. The cars are going quite fast but I got a ride to the airport in 20 minutes. These sections of hard shoulder can also be found closer into the city, nobody seemed to care that I was thumbing such a big fast road. Only problem was low sun in the evening burning the drivers eyes. Had fun english conversation with a lovley driver. Thumb only.

(23M August) on a Sunday evening at sunset, toward Reykjavik. Put out my thumb and 3 cars lined up to stop for me. Easiest hitch ever.

(23M August) I wasn't even hitchhiking, just walking South/West along this road on a sunday afternoon when a great local guide stopped and drove me to the parking lot in Þingvellir.

(23M August) There is space to pull over and cars are going slow and are plentiful. In an hour, I was offered 3 rides toward Selfoss. However going to Reykjavik via Þingvellir was difficult. I decided to walk an hour down the road to filter out unwanted traffic, and was picked up while walking (wasn't even hitchhiking)

(23M August) Stood here for a short time hitching North/East on a sunday afternoon. Got picked up quickly by an Austrian couple going to the Geysir.

(23M August). Good spot going North/East. I assume most cars are going toward Gulfoss or Strokkur geysir doing the golden circle counter-clockwise, but I was picked up by a local couple going to Laugarvatn on a Sunday morning.

(23M August) Good spot, plenty of space to pull over. In 30 minutes I was offered 2 rides to Kerið crater and one ride to Reykholt further along.

(23M August) Good spot. Cars can easily see you and pull over. Going West, it took 25 minutes on a Friday evening to get picked up by a friendly local going to Selfoss.

(23M August). Going West. A lot of traffic on a Friday morning/afternoon but none keen to take me. Place to pull over is not great because the sideroad is actively used to get to the glacier. In the end I got picked up toward Vik by a friendly local who stopped on the road when traffic was low.

(23M August) Trying to get a ride around sunset on a thursday going West/North. About a car every 2 minutes but soon enough I was picked up by a friendly tourist.

(23M August) Hitching east on a thursday morning. Not many cars seemed keen to take me but in the end a friendly tour bus operator decided to take me toward Hof which I was going toward.

(23M August) Choose to walk 30 minutes along the lake to get here instead of hitching at diamond beach. The bridge at diamond beach was extremely busy and there were already 2 hitchhikers in line who said they'd been there for 30 min. Plenty of cars pass, it took about 40 minutes on a wednesday afternoon to get a ride West.

(23M August) Stood here at noon on a Wednesday going West. Didn't have to wait 15 minutes to get picked up by German tourists.

(23M August) Stood here on a wednesday morning going West after checking out Petra's stone collection. You're on top of the hill so cars are going slowly and can see you. It took a while to get picked up but every car is an opportunity. In the end I got picked up by a local couple going all the way the Reykjavik.

(23M August). Was dropped off here by my previous ride. Going south. Not the best place for cars to pull over but they can see you ahead of time and are going slowly. If it's not too busy cars can pull over next to the road. Was picked up on 15 minutes toward Stöðvarfjörður by a friendly local.

(23M August). Good if you're going to Hallormsstaður. I was offered like 6 rides in two hours on a tuesday afternoon trying to get to Breiðdalsvík and follow the ring road. Apparently, the road on the other side of town going to Reyðarfjörður is the main way to continue on the ringroad. I moved there and was picked up within 20 minutes.

(23M August) Lots of cars passing toward Egilsstaðir on a tuesday afternoon, took 15 minutes to be picked up by a trucker.

Beyond this point the road to thorsmork is impossible without a super jeep, and traffic became very minimal. The handful of superjeeps which did pass all seemed to hate hitchhikers and just laughed. The big all terrain bus service eventually stopped but demanded 60 USD for 3 miles. Maybe I just got a bad day, but this wasn’t ideal and I walked the whole way. (5hrs) It was beautiful, but there are serious rivers to cross and the dust made breathing awful. The rest of Iceland was amazing for hitchiking, so the fact that the superjeeps where so hostile was bluntly weird. Other hitchikers reported not getting a ride, and superjeep hostility, apparently they mostly belong to one company who think we are scum. Hopefully things will be better for you, but don’t bank on getting picked up, don’t set off unless you can hike the whole way in and out or have $60 for a bus.

Single lane road but with a biiiggg hard shoulder. Traffic slowed by bridge good visibility, had a sign saying airport, ride in 5 minutes at 8pm. Thank you Iceland!! 2 minute walk away from the number 1 bus from Iceland centre (~500kr cash, the driver said, "whatever you have"

Each three sides of the roundabout are perfect for thumbing. Northwards and Southwards it will be very quick (usually it was 2-3 minutes tops), but direction Pingvellir and along road 36 it might be a bit slower, as less traffic goes there. From here I managed to hitchhike to Selfoss several times through Pingvellir at 10pm, so everything is possible in Iceland! x) [AdrianB]

Didn't wait at all, the first Icelandic car I waved down stopped :D Hitching in Iceland in October was unbelievably easy - the first day I got 7 rides east on the Ring Road and didn't wait once over 5 minutes. Icelanders pick up so much and so fast. They told me in the summer it gets really crowded with hitch-hikers and they often don't have space, so I was apparently lucking out on hitching in the fall :) Was a bit chilly and dark to camp out though. Hitching up to Höfn couldn't be easier, than I had to wait my time, beacuse a car passed maybe every 20 minutes. From Höfn to Egilsstaðir, and up to Akureyri is the hardest part (waited 2 hours once as so little passed by), then from Akureyri it gets really easy again.

We arrived with the ferry from Iceland. We followed the road and arrived at the point where all the cars of the ferry were going out. In 35 min we had our ride.
