Plenty of room to stop and cars not even going that fast. We were trying to catch someone as the bus we waited for didn't show up. Gave up after 15 minutes to make it on time for the next bus in a different spot. But still I believe it is very hard to catch someone solely relying on thumb up in italy. Asking directly is way easier.

Wanted to go Rimini but it's very hard to catch someone on thumb in Italy. This day the gas station was closed due to national holiday. Asking Italians works well thought, they just need to talk with you for a bit and they're open to take you. Didn't work for us this time, we went by train to rimini

We were waiting there for 50 minutes and asking around. Hardly anybody was going to Ravenna direction but after asking for some time a lady picked us up. She was going to Ravenna, was very chill and also drove us directly into a camping spot People in Italy are great if you just ask them

Went here from the gas station near bologne, the one going from Florence. It turned out noone there was going into Rimini direction which we wanted to. Here after 3 minutes a CEO of some robotics company in a new Audi Q5 SUV took us. We were 2 guys.

If you're trying to further south into Rimini direction don't stop at this station. It was kinda our mistake. It turned out basically everybody there was going north to Milan or further and noone through bologne to south. People there seemed very chill and wanted to take us but we were off with directions. After 2 hours of asking we decided to go back 30km to the previous gas station and ask there. It needed a little fance hopping but got a ride after 3minutes of asking.

Been asking around gas station if someone's going into bolognia direction. Not that many people were going there, most traffic to east or north. But apparently we've asked some businessman and got a ride in a brand new Volkswagen SUV taken 2 Hours ago from the dealership. Also the guy was a DJ and showed us his tracks.

We had to go there like 5km through the forest and the river because we've been left on the prior gas station going in the direction of Milan. After getting to that station first people we asked took us to Piacenza. Turned out it was s pretty famous Italian director

Biggest parking for trucks I've ever seen, maybe 200-300 of them. Every single one was going to France or Spain so it was s perfect spot to catch someone that direction. But we were going further into Italy There was mostly traffic from trucks but also a few cars going through. We've been waiting there for 2 hours asking around and caught a 300km ride somewhere around 23:00 by a guy that drove a Porsche there for some rich kids from Monaco For me the best spot in that neighborhood to go hop on the highway

After 10 minutes of waiting a french family took us to the nearest entrance on the highway on Italian side. They were kinda gibberish but really fine people

The train station has ticket barriers, so "just jump on" is bad advice. The tickets are €8, but if you can walk/hitch/Take a bus to the station further down the line it falls to €2.

After a little waiting a Swiss primary school teacher took me to Klosters, and we even got to ride the autotrain!

A short ride indeed, and ended up just having to walk to the end of town to continue. But I will never complain about being picked up in 10 seconds

Good spot. A lot of space to stop. And drivers see you fro a long time. Also nice spot because got to witness how motorcycle ran into a standing car. And one woman with a kid took me out of her way a bit to Falconara.

A bit far from the town. You can stand a bit earlier but I personally didnt want cars stopping on bycycle path but I think Italians wouldnt care. But this is good spot with s lot of space and gas station nearby

Good spot getting out Pesaro. If you try hitchhiking this road dont expect long rides. So write the next town over or a bit further. For my case i wrote Fano and got ride pretty quickly.

Two young people took me to gabicce mare (i stood with a cattolica sign). I was during rush hour and the traffic was veryyy slow and there is a loot of space to stop and a gas station to ask if you need. Good spot if you dont go that far

Not as much traffic as expected, but there was some. After 30minutes of waiting some guy in his 20ties stopped and picked us up. We were supposed to go only 10km to the next gas station but we've spent 3 hours together seeing Montagne and Monaco because he wanted to show us around. Great guy. We left off at the first city in Italy because he was apparently going there to buy like 30 packs of cigarettes cause they are way cheaper. We ate s baguette together and went further.

Stood there for 2 hours trying to get to Italy but no luck. People were going slow due to roundabout and there was a place to stop, but everyone always seems to be thing about toll station right before the entrance so hardly anybody cared about us. We resigned and took bus that got us to Nicea and to the higway

There was not that much traffic and even if someone was actually going they were usually picking the directions of Montpellier and we were going to Italy's border. Also people seemed to not even look in our direction. But after some time a lovely lady with her elderly mom stopped and they took us to the next gas station on the highway. Also the guard told us to leave while we were staying right after toll station which was unfortunate as there was a lot of space to park

―Szymon, May 2026

43.54406, 3.79359

I believe it's the best place to cross the Montpellier without going into it. There's a lot of traffic in many directions. We've been asking everybody around and many people were going to the next city 60 km away or Lyon, fewer to Aix-en-Provence but it's the best way to Italy and we were heading to it. It's kinda hard to navigate on the map what's the best way to Italy cause there is a lot of roads crossing each other after Montpellier. We 2 guys got picked up by a father and son from Germany that were supposed to go to Monaco but on our way there the son got so angry he had no cigarettes left that he broke the car (tear out both the mirrors, started to throw things into the car) and told us to leave

―Szymon, May 2026

Stood there right after the toll station. Cars going to Montpellier might have a problem to stop for you cause they need to cross the way of people on the right. Police came in 15 minutes and told us we need to move before the toll station. We stood right before the toll station with a sign pointing to people. I believe it's best to just stay on the little brick island between road's lines. Trying to pick someone from roads corner might be trickier cause many people pointing to the right on toll station are going the direction of Spain and we wanted to go Italy. After 20 minutes a nice 20years old solo lady invited us to her car (it was a technogirl speaking no English but loving techno)

Lot of people willing to take us, but everyone was going to Vienna or Linz, we wanted to go to Graz or Slovenia or somwhere west. After 1.5h we got lift to Italy.

There were quite a few people going to Italy. Took some time to find someone with enough space in they’re car for two guys with big backpacks. People were really kind, probably best spot to go to Italy.

Most cars have no room because they are visiting their family in the balkans and people who go to Italy don’t take you. But if some one who drives to the balkans has space they are insanely kind.

Workers on gas station are not friendly and don’t you let be there, you have to be next to Autogrill. Lot of people in weekend going direction Verona/Milan, but hitchhiking in Italy is not so easy. But you will definitely find a way and someone who’ll take you with.

a romanian trucker offered me a lift. he just started his shift and would have taken me all the way to italy, however i decided to avoid it and headed to slovenia over germany, hence he dropped me on aire de ambrussum

It’s not great, but it’s Italy. And with it being Italy, it’s actually pretty good! I got there in the afternoon in late January, with a sign reading “Verona”. I barely got any looks from passing cars, in all the time I was then I think it was two waves at most. But after 45 minutes, Michaela and her young son offered me a ride to Desenzano. As we were driving, her son who spoke English would translate between us, to save me the horror of my broken Italian. She decided that she absolutely refused to drop me at a service station to continue hitching, not because it was dangerous in her eyes, but because she thought it would take too long! In her eyes, she wanted to take me all the way to Verona, so the best she could do was invite me to her home for lunch, and buy me a train ticked to Verona! After countless refusals on my behalf, I finally gave in to the hospitality, and had the loveliest afternoon. “I’ve never had anything like this happen when hitching before!” “You’re in Italy now.”

There's an elongated parking spot to the right after the toll, where people can stop easily before they speed up. Had lost of cars even crossing from the further side of the road. Sign Chambery, got me to the Gare. Should be perfect for going direction Italy too, and getting long rides.

―friki, December 2025

In theory this should be a good spot for going far, but most of the cars were local, or going direction Italy. Got a ride to Crolle in an attempt to hitch the toll, where I got better results.
