Hitchhiked here for five hours trying to go west and nobody took us. We came back the next day and tried for two more hours and then gave up. It’s also the local hangout spot for the police officers and (apparently) hitchhiking is illigal in Italy, so they kept sending us away.

Was hitchhiking here at the end of the gasstation trying to go towards Trieste. Italians don’t like hitchhikers and after 90 minutes i gave up (it was late). I spoke to a truckdriver earlier who said he was going to Ljubljana the next day (which is where i needed to go) and i asked if he could take me the next day. We agreed to meet at 5 in the moring, so i camped in the bush behind the gasstation. When i was there the next day at 4:45, he was gone.

Waited here for six hours in the rain. Tried to go towards Triëste, but everybody was heading to Padova. Eventually i got picked up by a man who saw me earlier and felt bad for me because it started raining. He took me to the nearest gasstation on the highway.

Waited here for about thirty minuted until I got lucky and was taken to Padova. There wasn’t a lot of traffick and spots like these usually don’t work, especcially in Italy. However, I do think its the best option in the area.

Decent spot, space to pull over, but cars are going fast even though it is a turn. Best option if you come from courmayeur like we did. We walked up here to join the big road because the traffic out of the town was non-existant, but it was also on a sunday. It isnt possible to walk all the way up to the tunnel from here, I wouldnt risk it.

stood for 2 hrs trying to get towards venezia. simply doesn't seem to work here

Italians are not too keen on taking hitchhikers, but we got a very friendly Man

Pass station for motorcyclists mainly, great view but not that many cars, and most of them seemed very desintrested, got a ride after 70 min, luckily up until bologna Probatly still better than most spots as there is nowhere to stop most of time

Resting station with okish traffic, was rather difficult to get a ride, inly very short though

Most cars leave the road for the A1 autostrada, so there is very little traffic (except cyclists) but still it was possible to get a ride fairly quickly for two

Small junction after thr village, its possible for cars to stop although there is not much space

Easily accesible from florence by bus, there is a small space for cars to stop on a slight downhill slope Local drivers suprisingly helpful got a short ride to the next Village in 5min (including a tour to a construction site)

huge mall with a lot of people. bought some food, was eating and when people walked past me, I asked them. after 10-15 minutes nice old couple took me to Turin highway gas station.

i don't remember exactly, but I was asking around. was pretty easy.

i preferred to stay before the entry, so cars have more time to decide. was picked by a boat truck driver. was a nice ride. thumb.

Is a nice spot to wait, has shade and a decent shoulder. I got a short ride down the road. I could have got a longer ride if my italian was better. The first driver to stop was going further but got impatient with my poor attempt to say where I was going in italian.

It’s pretty hard for cars to stop here, but some friendly young people took me to Nice. From what i could find, it’s the only good way to get on the highway in the direction of Nice if your startingpoint is Menton. I actually started in Ventimiglia, but I took a train across the border, since hitchhiking next to a border (especially in Italy) didn’t seem like a good idea.

Waited at the end of the gasstation and got picked up in like half an hour. The guy was really nice and he took me all the way to Belinzona. There are a lot of tourists there in the summertime and most of them are heading to Italy through the Gothard tunnel. I think it’s a great spot to get through the Gothard tunnel. There was a really long line before the tunnel though, so we went over the Gothard passe with some great views.

Great spot to catch cars going towards italy. I recommend the walk up here if you get let off at the roundabout like i did. Its not too long, just follow the forest path, and here you have good visibility and cars plenty space to pull over. The spot on the turn before is bad: barrier blocking cars from pulling over

got a ride to Koper near Italy. this spot is better for cars to stop and collect traffic from both lanes. thumb

Very good spot to go to briancon or italy

Not a good spot to get closer to Italy, people are nice and waving but most of them are locals

Got a car heading the frontiere with Italy because they stopped on the parking of burger king, not a lot of space to park otherway

Very very good spot if you are heading to Milano, Brescia or Verona; you can have a ride in 20’ max. A lot of traffic thanks to the Autogrill. However, very bad spot to reach the north of Italy/A22/Trento (our case). If you are heading this way we recommend to go to Verona and to take another ride from there.

Sunder and his cousin brought me here and offered me coffee. It's Italy so I did not wanted to risk anything and just asked around in Italian. Found someone after half hour (I was taking my time) thanks Roberto! The type of guy who is dressed well, drive a beautiful car, you never know don't judge people!

I asked directly for austria, didnt want to hitch on the highway in italy so up north, they tend to be more strict. Most cars were not going on the highway, but finally one took me after a while there. Did not ask trucks!

Plenty of room to stop and cars not even going that fast. We were trying to catch someone as the bus we waited for didn't show up. Gave up after 15 minutes to make it on time for the next bus in a different spot. But still I believe it is very hard to catch someone solely relying on thumb up in italy. Asking directly is way easier.

Wanted to go Rimini but it's very hard to catch someone on thumb in Italy. This day the gas station was closed due to national holiday. Asking Italians works well thought, they just need to talk with you for a bit and they're open to take you. Didn't work for us this time, we went by train to rimini

We were waiting there for 50 minutes and asking around. Hardly anybody was going to Ravenna direction but after asking for some time a lady picked us up. She was going to Ravenna, was very chill and also drove us directly into a camping spot People in Italy are great if you just ask them

Biggest parking for trucks I've ever seen, maybe 200-300 of them. Every single one was going to France or Spain so it was s perfect spot to catch someone that direction. But we were going further into Italy There was mostly traffic from trucks but also a few cars going through. We've been waiting there for 2 hours asking around and caught a 300km ride somewhere around 23:00 by a guy that drove a Porsche there for some rich kids from Monaco For me the best spot in that neighborhood to go hop on the highway

Not as much traffic as expected, but there was some. After 30minutes of waiting some guy in his 20ties stopped and picked us up. We were supposed to go only 10km to the next gas station but we've spent 3 hours together seeing Montagne and Monaco because he wanted to show us around. Great guy. We left off at the first city in Italy because he was apparently going there to buy like 30 packs of cigarettes cause they are way cheaper. We ate s baguette together and went further.

People were going slow due to roundabout and there was a place to stop, but everyone always seems to be thing about toll station right before the entrance so hardly anybody cared about us. We resigned and took bus that got us to Nicea and to the higway

There was not that much traffic and even if someone was actually going they were usually picking the directions of Montpellier and we were going to Italy's border. Also people seemed to not even look in our direction. But after some time a lovely lady with her elderly mom stopped and they took us to the next gas station on the highway. Also the guard told us to leave while we were staying right after toll station which was unfortunate as there was a lot of space to park

I believe it's the best place to cross the Montpellier without going into it. There's a lot of traffic in many directions. We've been asking everybody around and many people were going to the next city 60 km away or Lyon, fewer to Aix-en-Provence but it's the best way to Italy and we were heading to it. It's kinda hard to navigate on the map what's the best way to Italy cause there is a lot of roads crossing each other after Montpellier. We 2 guys got picked up by a father and son from Germany that were supposed to go to Monaco but on our way there the son got so angry he had no cigarettes left that he broke the car (tear out both the mirrors, started to throw things into the car) and told us to leave
