I was taken here by friends and started asking people who were getting petrol once we arrived. I found a ride to Turin within 10 minutes. There was police in the parking area so my friends waited with my luggage until I could just swap into the other car. Don’t stick out your thumb or hold a sign. It’s illegal in Italy and people apparently get fined.

Gas station across the street for goodies, it's in the city center so tons of traffic, sadly most of it is very local, but lots of locals go shopping in Innsbruck, and tons of foreign plates (mostly German) driving past.

Really big bus stop, also has an turn off to the chappel next to it so lots of space for people to stop. Restaurant across the street if you wanna try asking people manually. Lots of tourist traffic as well.

On the begining of the parking next to a street. Thanks to this and bicycle lane on road there is small place for stopping here even if parking spots itself are occupied. Direction Cannobio/Switzerland

Inside the city, bus stop next to you and way out of the city in front, easy to go west! Be mindful, that writing the sign in German instead of Italian might help you score a faster right, at least according to person who picked me up.

Nice vibe, many cars No long rides because it is far away from a motorway but along the coast we enjoyed very much!

Bad spot We headed for genua but there is an other exit to ventimiglia more at the side You can barely get to the genua cars We needed to climb down newt to the motorway (fences everywhere) and walk in to the village Also the place is full of police and border control, they where not talking to us but I didn’t want to interfere

Was eating pizza with a sign "Chamonix s.v.p." next to me and a fellow restaurant goer asked if he could bring me. Didn't even have to hold the sign.

Good spot, lots of people who go in the general Courmayeur direction. Took one such opportunity and the guy was nice enough to drive me to Courmayeur anyway as we were having a good chat about glaciology. Added him on Instagram and we're considering doing a hiking trip together next summer. 10/10 would hitchhike again.

Great spot! Despite little traffic in the off season, most cars (not vans or work trucks) go to the valley.

Great spot, we can take the time to talk to people and there's a lot of passage. Accessible by foot so you don't die trying to get on the highway. A guy took us straight to Croatia, forever grateful!!

Good spot Electricty Waited for a long time (2 guys with backpack ans sign "italy") but it was already night time. Still got a ride with an italian couple

No traffic, maybe 1car every 4mins, mostly to italy. Very expensive gas, so noone stops

Short walk out of the city center, but gets you on the road towards Italy, traffic past here is quite often South Tyroleans coming back from Austria, so good spot to get into Italy.

We wanted to go just somewhere to Italy because it was already late and dark. We got a lift immediately to a rest station after Bolzano.

Good if you're going to Vienna and want to look for trucks, and it's not sunday - as on sundays trucks are prohibited from travelling through Austria. Not many cars here, so had to use the sign on the road. By miracle found a couple going to Italy, but the place seems difficult if trucks are not an option.

Small but nice gas station, north direction. But in general, standing on the road (exit from gas station) in Italy didn't work. If you want to get a ride you must talk to people and ask them directly. And don't give up! :)

Towards Italy, mainly to Trieste/Barcola area, this is the road that the locals take, they come to Slovenia to fill up their cars, motorcycles etc and use the entrance road in about 500 meters to go to the highway, decent traffic, mostly Italians, wait times of 5-15 minutes expected, way better than anywhere else around Sežana

Quite some cars going to Innsbruck and to Italy

Honestly, not the worst spot in the world. It serves as good mid-point between Croatia/Slovenia. Hitchhiked there around 11 AM on a Wednesday. Not a lot of traffic but it started picking up a bit in a few hours. Opposite to what everyone on here was saying, most people were going to Croatia and I wanted to go to Slovenia haha. Luckily a truck driver noticed me and told me to come with and took me all the way to Slovenia (my first truck ride heheh). Went an unusual route and went through Croatia then Slovenia instead of going directly through Slovenia (his end destination was Italy). I waited in front of the gas station with my sign saying “Slovenia”.

After waiting about one hour without many cars there a guy came who would have taken me to italy but i only went with him to villach, where I can go into slovenia fast

Got insanely lucky and was got by a guy heading to Udine in Italy. Decent spot for flagging cars down leaving the fuel

I don't know what anyone said, but most of the vehicles are heading specifically to Germany and Austria—very few to Italy, and the ones that do go are packed. I've been here since yesterday evening, but it's been completely useless; I just hope I make it to Padua.

One of the best spots in Switzerland. A Large gas station, where people rest. Direct route to Italy. If you get tired, you can chill inside the gas station.

1 f 1 m Aug 2026 18:00 Decent spot. Loads of traffic, but italy is rather hard since hitchhiking is illegal… Got a german couple to take us to verona.

With a "Milano" sign we got picked up until Milano in 5 minutes by some people resting at the gas station. Friday is the best time to hitchhike here because of workers going home for the weekend (italians to Italy, or other people from Milano airport to other countries).
