For 2026 update, less trucks as it used to be, but there's still quite some of them, almost all of them will be going to Russia, usually to Zilupe border so try to talk with the drivers and most likely they'll get you to Daugavpils or Rezekne ringroads or if u head further east (Ludza or Russia) you can go with them all the way

Towards Zarasai, loads of traffic but mostly locals, small bus stop and poorly plowed at winter, okay speeds but cars tend to speed and come in line due to traffic lights, wait times of 30-90 minutes expected

Towards Moletai/Utena, last great spot before the horrors of roadworks that the road currently has (probably will be better in a years time or so) meanwhile here you have a decent speeding lane, great visibility and loads of traffic, wait times of 10-20 minutes expected

Towards Karvys/Pikeliškes, very wide shoulder, okay amount of traffic, low speeds and everythings fine besides the fact that its mostly locals, going to the nearby villages, nevertheless wait times of 10-20 minutes will be expected

Towards Naujoji Akmene, low traffic, high speeds and poorly maintained road, best bet is to get someone from Vegeriai, wait times of 20-60 minutes expected, during the winter very poorly plowed also

Pretty good to Panevezys, unlikely you’re going to get all the way to Riga from here though

well, I was dropped off at exactly this spot, which I quickly abandoned for two reasons: ONE: there was a sketchy local already there, and he didn’t look too happy to see me thumbing as well. And no chance I was going to wait for him, because I don’t know who the hell would pick him up. TWO: there was a line of maintenance vehicles effectively blocking cars from getting to this spot. They were repairing the road or something. Ultimately I pretty quickly decided to just walk to a nearby gas station. However, I am sure this is normally a good spot, just a series of unlucky circumstances!

always people going towards poland or at least mariampole

i don't know how to rate this better, just get to the border as fast as possible, your best option is to find a polish person or tourist or some kind? lithuanians either go to mariampole or just don't pick you up, very little people actually stop with the thumb, better to just wait and ask around everyone who stops here

We had a hard time finding a ride toward Poland on a Sunday. Two people (male and female) very few car. We asked directly to people in the petrol station, lot of them said no. Eventually one couple changed opinion and took us to the next city. Maybe we had bad luck because of Sunday, controls at the border....

I went with a sign at just after 07:00 (still dark). Cars moving very fast (speed limit 70 kph), but after about 30 min a kind truck driver stopped and took me directly to Riga.

Towards Germaniškis/LV, decent amount of traffic, city limits so slow speeds, wide shoulder of the road, wait times of 5-15 minutes

Towards Biržai, ideal spot, loads of low speed cars all going to there the least, wait times of 5-10 minutes, you could even go Biržai-Germaniškis/Skaistkalne-Riga if you want to go around the via baltica

Not very busy but every car passing you will most likely drive to Riga so that's nice. A long bus stop for cars to stop and they drive 60-80km/h. Good visibility.

Tough spot. Not a busy gas station but you can hitch the road from the gas station exit. Didn't have any luck to Latvia from here, only found a ride to the next village. If you wait long enough, getting to Riga shouldn't be a problem though.

Stood at the end of the gas station to catch the road + people leaving the station and quickly found a ride a bit forwards. Probably better to get a ride to Latvia from here though, than to get shorter ones.

Fast speeds but a lot of traffic. Good for Klaipeda but also north towards Latvia. Have a big sign. I had "LV" written and it took me on the right road but not too far.

Towards Lithuania, first somewhat okay spot, even though as there are loads of good places for cars to stop along the way from Auce, noone will cuz about 95% of the cars are locals headed to any of the border villages as well as this road being generally little used, try to aim for Lithuanian passenger cars, wait times of 30-50 minutes here, anywhere before probably 60+ minutes

Busy service station. Was able to find a lift to Suwalki but should be very easy to find one to Lithuania.

It rained quite heavily, so I found shelter nearby Vynoteka. A lot of people going to Lithuania buy cheap alcohol in Poland's border, and I believe this is one of the last alcohol stores in the north.

A bus stop with enough space for cars to stop. Good spot if you want to get out of Augustów and go to Suwałki (which is eventually much better city to get a ride to Lithuania). Waited 25 minutes with sign Suwałki/Kaunas.

Small gas station. Going to Lithuania, the station is right after a curve so drivers dont see it that good. We were in pair, one hitchhiked on the entry to the station and the other at the exit. Sign "LT" - Lithuania. Got a ride past the border to the closest town.

Tried my luck here for 90min towards Lithuania. Although there are many cars passing and there is an unused bus stop to stop safely, no one took me. Seems like a good spot, and also quite a few Lithuanian cars. After 90min, I moved further to the other mentioned spots on this map, and waited 60min more to be picked up.

One of the better highway exits in Lithuania outside the big towns. Took a fairly short ride, would have waited for direct ride to kaunas hadnt it rained.

Good spot how to get to Lithuania. Infront of the gas station. After 25 mins guy called us from gas station and take us to Kaunas.

mostly local traffic. many lithuania cars but almost none stop. I declined 2 rides to marijampole in the hopes of getting a ride further but it was a mistake and i got stuck for 2 hours. its not a bad spot but i think i was just very unlucky. in the afternoon many lithuanians go back from shopping so in the end i got a ride to Kaunas.

Okay place since cars go slowly. Possible to get a ride to Lithuania.

Two guys with backpacks, signaling with a sign LT. Most of drivers were local, but we got a ride to northern Lithuania in less than hour.

When I arrived at this spot I felt very pessimistic - a very rare car coming through and mostly trucks stopping for sleep breaks. Once I approached a truck driver, he agreed to pick me up next morning after he had slept. The next morning I got the longest distance ride I had ever gotten by hitchhiking - took me all the way to Paņevežis (Lithuania).

Difficult with thumb up, nobody stopped until a man from Lithuania picked me up..

Most of the cars going to Bydgoszcz but you can find someone going east eventually. Nice spot to hang around in front of the gas station and talk to drivers, people are friendly. Got a ride to Warsaw with a person from Berlin going to Lithuania with their van.

Not too much traffic. I was trying to get to Lithuania with a sign Litwa (Lithuania in Polish). Noone wanted to pick me up even though some truck drivers I knew was going to Lithuania. But after 30 min I found a guy with Lithuanian number plates to get me to Vilnius. Probably helped a lot that I spoke lithuanian to him as I am lithuanian.

Not sure if it's legal, but got here around 1am, and got a ride towards Lithuania at 1.30 am in deep winter, I'd say try this when in time where there's not many cars, good lights

Even though it doesn't look that promising the spot just keeps delivering, lots of traffic to Latvia and Lithuania and somehow they always stop here within 10-20 minutes, in itself it's just a bus stop and not many cars turning from Linnavere road

had several offers towards augustow (which i declined), after 90mins someone took me to suwałki not many foreign license plates, so maybe not the best sport to ask for a ride all the way to lithuania (?) very easy to reach by bus, very spacious

Declined some rides that only went 40 to 60 Kilometers and a ride to Białystok, after one hour got a ride straight to Vilnius (Lithuania) which is was hoping on. 10/10
