Plenty of room for drivers to pull over. Little café next to where you can grab a drink or a bite. Waitresses were nice and open for a chat while waiting. Wasn't here when the car stopped. Two men from the area, going to Cabo for a left political meeting. Very happy to tell us about the background of Baja Sur, Mexican culture and mexican politics.

We started at the gas station first, but after about 20', the manager said for safety reasons we couldn't stay around the gas pumps. We got back to the road where Sergio and his partner finally picked us up, going to La Paz. Well-known musician in the city, he offered us later to grab a drink. Stopping to visit the family, they dropped us at the city exit to get another ride faster. Hitchhiked with another hitchhiker.

One of the spots where people were the most smiling and waving at us, but a very long time before someone stopped for us. We got a ride from a dad and his two young kids, on his way to Loreto to drop his kids to their mom's. Great person, very thoughtful with us and kept sure we were all good until we found a host for the night. Hitchhiked with another hitchhiker.

We were at el Tope at the end of the city. A man delivering a car from Tijuana to La Paz, his usual gig to make some money. Halfway through, we stopped to have lunch together. Nice ride, he accepted to drop us further than downtown to increase our chances for the next ride. Hitchhiked with another hitchhiker.

Brought by our host out of the town, nothing around. We got a ride from a Mexican man in his thirties, bringing the car back to his mom, dreaming of travelling more. Hitchhiked with another hitchhiker.

Workers were right. We got a ride crossing the whole desert. Pack water or buy some at Cataviña! Our driver was on his way for a job, nice exchanges punctuated with silence to observe the scenery. Offered to drop us to our host in Guerrero Negro. Hitchhiked with another hitchhiker.

Hitchhiked with another hitchhiker. Certainly a very good spot to head North, but disastrous to go South. Or we were there too early. The local pastor recommended it to us. 95% were locals and the rest going up North. After two hours, some local workers offered to jump in the pick-up to bring us to the other edge of town to have more chance. Pemex employees were supportive of us and indicated when drivers were locals who wouldn't give us a ride.

Hitchhiked with another hitchhiker. Asked at the gas station, but only locals. Jumped on a pickup waiting in line at the traffic light

Hitchhiked with another hitchhiker. Went to ask drivers at Pemex. Very quick, Manuel offered me picking us up, as he knew us. Apparently, people in Baja talk and as he works on the road, he probably saw us multiple times and heard about these two travelers. Nice man with good sense of humor. Dropped us in El Rosario where we were strongly recommended to spend the night, as for the next 4 hours of the road, there is nothing. (Samuel, the pastor at Iglesia del Nazareno could host you for one night.)

Hitchhiked with another hitchhiker. Small city with not much, the only gas station is abandoned. We stayed by the road there as we would be seen from far & more than enough place for drivers to stop. We got picked up by a single man, who seemed nice, but my feminine partner got uncomfortable at some point by his questions&looks in the rearview mirror. Made a sign saying "Un Poco Mas Allá" but didn't seem effective.

Hitchhiked with another foreign hitchhiker. The main road crossing the city sounded like offering plenty of good places to hitchhike as perfect, but no one stopped. Most people were making signs saying they were locals. A few bystanders stopped, curious of us. Ultimately, I went back and started asking at the gas station. Got a pick-up by two men we could jump in after 20 minutes. Employees at Pemex didn't say anything about me

Hitchhiked with another hitchhiker. Dropped at this spot after taking the bus out of Ensenada. A woman and her kid told us to jump on the pick-up and there we go !

This was my first long, wait but finally a guy stoped, thank you Juan Jose Rivas Normally, you choose, which road to go depending on your destination, is the road that you go to ask for ride

Normally, the people from San Sebastian del Oeste go often to Puerto Vallarta, La Estancia or Mascota, on this case I met a nice guy who took me to La Estancia and from there he told me that he was going to go Mascota later so I waited for him and he took me there his name I don’t remember

After the first ride left me, I take another because normally cars doesn’t go directly to San Sebastián del Oeste, but people from here often go there, I went to camp to La Bufa if you’re gonna do that, be very prepared of the coldest of the mountain (I did not)

I did this journey when I felt tired of my hopelessness My plan was to go to San Sebastian del Oeste but first you have to stop on La Estancia, then take another ride from LE to SSO

Average spot, it seems like asking directly at the cars stopped at the streetlight wasn't worth it. Got a ride from someone who waited for me in the hospital parking lot, honking to attract my attention. Gloria was on her way to bring back her mom. As she picked me up, she talked to me about Mexico and called family relatives to see if they could give me my next ride.

Good place for hiking in direction of Mexico. Cars are going pretty fast but they have time to see you.

So at winter I drank some vodka and rode my bear to Chukotka. I stood there for some time until I saw a dog team. So I thumbed up and got picked. The driver dropped me at Alyaska. Ditch Mexico, there's a hole up north!

The last little bit of civilization here before New Mexico is a truck stop. Terrible place. One of the managers doesn't care what you do here, she and her husband house up transients. Due to the weird on-ramp you need a directional sign. Hard to get a ride east.

I was going to Mexico (Jan 2014) and was offered two rides to Chicago before I finally accepted the third. Staff was really chill.

"Cantona" tollbooth (caseta) on the Mexico City/Puebla to Xalapa highway. There's an archaeological site called Cantona 4km away. There's a gas station and restrooms, so you can talk to stopped drivers.

Tollbooth (caseta) on the paid road towards Puebla/Mexico City. You can easily walk here from the small town of Las Vigas. Cars are coming out slow out of the tollbooth, and can stop with no problem. There's no restrooms or gas station here.

Buses from Xalapa center to Banderilla can let you off right here. It's the road to Puebla and Mexico City, but the free one, so you're not likely to get a long distance ride. The spot is a good one, cars have tons of room to stop and can see you long before they get to you. Try to get one at least to Las Vigas, where you can easily get on the paid (cuota) road and hitch from a tollbooth (caseta). If you get stuck, an intercity bus from TRV company going further towards Las Vigas, Perote, and Teziutlan stops here.

Buses from Xalapa center to Banderilla stop about a 5-minute walk away. There's a traffic light right before the division between the free (libre) and paid (cuota) highways towards Puebla and Mexico City. If you're going long distance, the paid one would be better, but those going there would be in the inner, further lanes, so it can be hard to get a ride from here.

Take a bus to the new bus station. There is a Soriana market out there. On that big road (the hwy to the East), go left, crossing Av.Patria, still walking and you will see a Pemex gas station, where there are many cars, pick ups and trucks going East (Mexico DF, Morelia, Guanajuato, etc) Tomas un bus hacia la nueva central camionera, a fuera hay un soriana, pues en esa carretera principal vas hacia la izquierda (como volviendo a Gdl), cruzars Av.Patria, y en seguida llegars a una gasolinera Pemex

Cars go by really fast, but it's the most important route in between Mexico city and Guadalajara, the two biggest cities in Mxico, so, although you might have to wait a little bit, the next ride might take you all the way.

Here is the place where I started a nomadic art project related with hitchhiking in Mexico. I painted in white on the asphalt my own shadow projected on the road with my thumb up. I did this action in all the right places in Mexico City to get out from the city. I painted the first shadow in that place, near the art college of Mexico City, ENAP. It's an abandoned petrol station. I think it's not a really good spot for hitchhiking, but I just wanted to explain the project here. If you want to know more info about this, you can contact with me: aniol.macau@gmail.com THANKS! and good trip!

Thats a good spot if you want to hitch from Mexico to the south of the republic (directions: Cuernavaca, Tepoztlan, Oaxtepec, Chilpancingo, Acapulco). Theres a toll where you can ask for a raid but if its not possible, you go walking 200 meters from the toll to a bar next to the road, in your right hand. In that place youre going to find a painted white shadow (my own shadow with the thumb up) on the asphalt, this is an art project Ive been working in Mexico City, painting different shadows in all the right places to get out from the city. If you want to know more info about this, you can contact with me: aniol.macau@gmail.com THANKS! and good trip!

This was my first hitch spot in Mexico. I think I walked for maybe five minutes before I was picked up to get back to San Cristbal. Little buses (colectivos) came by constantly too, but putting my thumb down when they went by saved me 10 pesos in the end.
