there is no way to get free lift to the lake as being an improvised taxi driver is the local sport.Tours charge 15,000, from private you can bargain to 10,000

on the way to Orkhon Valley, some will stop and ask money for the lift.No shade, avoid hot hours in summer.

on the way to Orkhon Valley, few cars. It seems that mostly local farm labours stop, perhaps better morning hours. Be prepared to be invited for drinking trip breaks on the way.No shade, avoid hot hours in summer.

It took me 5 minutes of simply walking torwards the border and getting a free ride through it and further on the Erlian.Unfortunately in the whole area people have a different understanding of hitchhiking, so you have to tell them that you don't have any cash.

Good spot for hitching out of Ulan Batar going south. There is a bus that goes all the way here. Many drivers will ask for money, but somebody will come that takes you for free.―Anonymous, December 2014

I second the earlier comment. Move out of the town and make absolutely sure the driver will take you for free. I got a hitch from here and was forced to pay a fee (I took it up with the police, but still ended up paying something).―Dennis Prooi, December 2014

It is absolutely senseless to cross this border to/from Russia. Even if it makes your way longer, you are better off crossing the border at Kyakhta/Altanbulag. There are so few foreigners crossing this border, you will be the centre of attention and interrogation by the soldiers. It is quite easy to hitch once you cross to the Russian side as many drivers ride to the nearby town of Borzya, where you can move on to Chita.―Anonymous, May 2014

The paved road ends here, which makes it really difficult to hitch to Choibalsan. If you are hopeless, there are buses every day which arrive in Khentii and move on to Choibalsan.―Anonymous, May 2014

If you are trying to go to Bulgan or Erdenet, this is not a nice spot. The road is isolated. Although it's longer, going towards Ulaanbaatar and waiting on the Bayankhangai junction will be faster.―Anonymous, April 2014

If it's the high season, you can ask one of the foreign or local tourists to ride along back to UB. If not, go near the road and start hitchhiking. You probably won't wait more than 10 minutes. Explain beforehand that you are HHing and not going to pay for the ride.―Anonymous, April 2014

To go east (to Chengis Khan Statue or to the cities in the east) take the bus #27 and get off at the last stop. You will end up in a town and there is a gate (checkpoint). Go past this gate and start hitchhiking. It's one of the easiest places in the world.―Canaydemir, April 2014

If you get dropped off further from the center in UB, you can always try hitchhiking first. It's not like other big cities where it's impossible and you have to either walk or take a bus. People expect you to pay when you waive at cars though, so definitely explain yourself before getting in the vehicle.―Anonymous, April 2014

Walk past the Buddha statue and go down the hill. You will soon wait for a ride. This is also the road that leads to Darkhan Bus Terminal, so make sure that you tell the driver you are not going to the bus terminal.―Anonymous, April 2014

Walk past the gas stations and stay on a spot where the driver can stop. You probably will not have to wait for long. Here you can hitch a ride until Darkhan or if you are lucky, all the way to UB.―Anonymous, April 2014

Walk past the two gas stations as there are many cars which go until only there and go back to the town. Here, you can hitch a ride at least until Sukhbaataar.―Canaydemir, April 2014

In order to pass the border you need to be in the car, usually is not that difficult to get one. If you experience difficulties security guys may help you to find someone who is willing to take you across the border or possibly even somewhere further away. There is not many people who can speak English so please be prepared to communicate in Russian or Mongolian.―Anonymous, October 2013

If you are going in the direction of China remember to take big supply of water as you may spend sometime waiting for the ride. There is also no place to hide from the sun !(It gets hot and there is at least 3km to the city)―Anonymous, October 2013

It's definitely a good place to catch a ride to at least next city. There is no people who are bothering you with unnecessary advices, or who simply try to make money of you. You should be prepared to wait little while as there is no much traffic here.―Anonymous, October 2013

About crossing the Mongolian border: There is a long line of waiting cars. I went up to them and asked if I could join them. Got rejected by two kazakh cars. They often travel with the whole family to visit relatives in Mongolia, so they may have no space to take you. Better ask cars with russian plates. I found two belarussian travelers who would take me. Even as a westerner without speaking much russian it should be doable to find a lift, if you're lucky you may find travelers from western countries. At the border, no problem as a hitchhiker, you are allowed to travel in another car, just the usual checks and a bit of patience needed...rating: 5/5

It's the main road out of town going south. Little traffic, but some may go far. Be sure to get a ride that's a least a bit far or you'll get stuck in Inner Mongolia where there is little traffic.―Anonymous, December 2014

It is not possible to cross the border on foot, so there will be taxis and minibuses who will try to take you. They will tell you that you cannot hitchhike. Don't give up and ask other people who are crossing the border in their own vehicles. But also make it clear to them that you are not going to pay for the ride. You will need to write the licence plate number of the car on an immigration form when you enter Mongolia.―Anonymous, April 2014

To go to Mongolia, take the minibus 28 to "Istok" and you will be dropped off at the airport road junction. You can start there or walk for a bit, it's fairly easy.―Anonymous, April 2014
