Took the bus to Cono Norte from the centre of town and then walked a few minutes. Barely had time to drop our bags and lift our thumbs that an Italian tourist with a rented car stopped to give us a lift. The road between Arequipa and Puno is absolutely gorgeous!rating: 5/5, wait: 1 min, ride: 224 km →

Looked like a good stop but we had such a hard time hitchhiking to the border with Bolivia (there were two of us, a guy and a girl). A beautiful green Volvo truck ended up stopping and taking us to the next town where we were stranded for three hours.rating: 3/5, wait: 60 min, ride: 86 km ↘

Peaje. I tried for 2 hours closer to the city, with no luck. (close to petrol station)No shade, but got picked up quite quickly. There is a space before and after peaje.
A bit of Venezuelanos are trying to hitchhike, which can make drivers a bit more scared.

Went with @crazyrik. (4 people)I'd say we were really lucky to get a truck here, but pretty sure if you wait long enough a big truck is gonna take you pretty far.

We (3 People) waited for ages and went down the road. At that spot was a police controlpoint - they helped us by convincing a truck driver.rating: 3/5, ride: 105 km →

Don't wait at the bottom where the shops end. Stand as close as possible to the toll gate and use a sign with destination. We got a lot more reactions that way.―Anonymous, June 2019

So get off the bus/car earlier, so that you don't end in Aguas Verdes―ManuelW, June 2016

AS FOREIGNERS: DON'T GO TO AGUAS VERDES! You have to cross the border more in the south, the street is caled 'frontera', I think. We had to take some motos to get there and they were dropping us in the wrong place - so if you take motos: make sure that they drop you at the entrance to Ecuador/exit of Peru and not at the entrance to Peru!!―Anonymous, June 2016

This was a good spot for getting north: Behind the 'grifo - nor oriente' - it's in the direction of Lambayeque, you can easily take a bus. There are some 'peatonales' here, so the trucks have to go slowly and you can just take them ;-)―Anonymous, June 2016

It's nice waiting here, because you can enjoy a cold coconut and drink it :p―ManuelW, June 2016

A nice spot to wait for getting north here. You can from Piura get a ride here (or to Suillana) and then continue from here - for instance to Mancora. The Panamericana does not have a lot of traffic from here to the north at the coast, because there's another Panamericana more in the east - which is shorter if you directly want to get to ecuador.―Anonymous, June 2016

I'm From Brazil, got a ride from here in 10 minutes with a trucker to cuzco. The only thing that i think is good to point is that, while i was there, an old man was by my side. He was desperated because i was hitchhiking, saying that it wasn't safe.
On the other hand, trucker said that that it was common for him to take hitchhickers there.
Take your on conclusions.
Mine is, i would do that again
To get in this place i asked a man on the street where was the road to cuzco and he indicated me a mini van that would take me here. it costs 0,60 cents.
Transportantion in Peru is extremely cheap.

Heading to the border with Peru. Although the road is friendly to stop cars and people around are really pleasant, the traffic is extremely(!) low. It's possible to rely only on good luck to get a ride to Peru, when taking local rides is not recommended except you are ok walking few days and camp.
After 50-60 km south from Vilcabamba, there is no paved road up to the border and dirt road is usually in a bad condition due to rains, sometimes even closed.
