man, alone, 26 years, waited for a long time, but no one went up north. Little cars moved from the left lanes (direction Porto) to this gas station. Eventually opted for a bus from the Oriente bus station (20 min. from the gas station/30 min. walk)

first waited near the door of the station thumbing with a sign for Lisboa/Albufeira, then by the road entrance to the station, when i stood on the exit (where the main road meets the station) i got a ride within a couple of minutes from someone in the station.

portuguese highways which still have tolls, like the alentejo highway, are pretty empty. that said, a super kind girl brought me here from montijo and even went asking round for someone to take me. in the meantime i found a portuguese trucker who took me further on his way to murcia. important to note is i was there during the apagão

Was trying to get to Lisbon, but indeed most cars go to Faro. I still talked to two or three who were going to Lisbon, they just couldn’t take me. I ended up going to Faro.

Long waiting time (like everywhere on our route trough portugal) but definitly possible to get the ride from here to Lisbon. More people showed us that they go north - direction Porto. We tried different places on N234 from Mealhada but this spot after the rondo and before pay-gates was so far the best.

The spot is good - gas station and small restaurant where many people stop for the dinner. But it took us (2 girls) so long to get out from here (people mostly travel very short distance or have full car).

―Czajka, January 2026

I will not recomend this spot - don’t get here by choice. But if you end up in here it’s definitely possible to get out. There is a small parking to stop cars safe. During 50 min 2-3 cars stopped to ask if we want to get to Coimbra, then finally we found somebody going to the east.

The spot is good - but it took us quite long - almost 2h - as for 2 girls hitchhiking it’s quite long waiting time. We were standing with the Aveiro sign but it wasn’t working well, better just with the thumb up. The dors were open, but it took us a moment to find where to enter the path ;)

Two girls waiting for a car. It was Sunday and there weren't many cars. I think it's a good place.

Me, my LOVE and our dog were here for quite a long time and were prepared to sleep in the Forrest for the night. However at the most unexpected time a car stopped and took us to La Junquera even though we had a sign with Perpignan. But since on the way and our destination is Portugal we took it! Lucky us since we are two with backpacks and a dog……:)

we got a ride here from Tarifa, and was a great sunset place to find a ride to sevilla (we chose a gas station 1h south of sevilla, to hitch onwards to Portugal). possible both to thumb and to wait for cars to stop for gas.

Wort place to go to Portugal. All spanish people, you know... A old french couple took me to Vilar Formoso. In Vilar I couldn't hitchhike more and I had to take train to Guarda and then to Porto.

I tried asking around at the gas station but all the cars were full or we're going towards Salamanca. There are a lot of truck drivers and foreigners (France, UK, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland...) at the gas station, but many are families. After I decided moving to the entrance of the highway, a Spanish guy exited from the highway, and promised me to take me to Valladolid (my sign). Turns out he was going further and I ended up in Burgos.
