One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from Covasna to Comandău. The was a place to pull over (the entrance to a car park). Very good visibility. The traffic was pretty slow, so I had to wait a bit (30 minutes), but luckily there was shade. Most drivers were showing me that they are not going far. But after 30 minutes I finally got a car going to Comandău, which took me there.

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from lake Siriu to Covasna (successful). Until this point the hitchhiking was going smoothly (short waits). Here I got stuck for a bit. It wasn't superb long - 40 minutes, but in strong sun it wasn't a pleasant wait. There is a bit of a bay to pull over. No shade. Slow traffic. But a few cars have passed me there. After 40 minutes of waiting I decided to start walking. And the moment I put the backpack on and walked maybe for a minute, the first car stopped and took me to Covasna.

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from lake Siriu to Covasna (successful). I was dropped here by the previous driver. Loads of space to stop. No shade. Very slow traffic. After 10 minutes wait, the first passing car stopped and took me to Zagon. Not far but over the crucial gravel part of the road.

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from lake Siriu to Covasna (successful). I wasn't sure if any of two shortcuts works. The maps were showing long times due to partly gravel roads. I was standing before the fork to cover both options. There was shade and a bit of space to pull over. But the traffic was slow enough that they actually didn't need any extra space to stop. After 10 minutes one guy, speaking English, stopped and ensured me that the shortest way was perfectly drivable. He was going only a couple of kms, but did a few extra miles for me and dropped me at the end of the tarmac.

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from here to Covasna (successful). There is enough space to pull over by a car in a wide entrance to a forest road. It's in the middle of a curve, so the visibility is limited. On the good side they were going slowly coz of the curve. There was a vary bit of shade. For some reason cars were coming in waves. After 15 minutes I got a 25 kms ride (roughly a half to my destination).

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, an evening of a sunny day. On my way from here to the lake 12 kms away. There is a big bay to pull over. It's behind a curve so visibility is limited. There was shade. Less than a km north of it there is much better spot at the end of the village. I just came here for water from a nearby spring and I couldn't be arse to walk back. My laziness payed off. After 12 minutes I got my desired 12 kms ride 😁

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from Brasov to the mountain pass 30 kms away from here. It wasn't a very good spot. Very little space to stop. There were much better spots a few kms before. So no need to get so far from Brasov. I just needed to buy some food supplies in Lidl for my multi day hike. That's why I ended up here. No shade. Cars were going slowly after the roundabout. But were coming from around the corner so they were seeing my in the last moment. Which means a short time for the decision. Slow traffic. I didn't have much hope with this place. But to my surprise after 15 minutes a lorry (!!!) stopped just in the middle of the road (nowhere to pull over) and I got a ride to my destination.

(2 people, f, 26 + m, 49) Cars are coming in fast here but drivers can see you from a long distance and they can easily pull in on the side strip. A nice local picked us up and took a detour to drop us off at the border crossing.

(2 people, f, 26 + m, 49) One of many stops on our way to the Serbian border. Lots of short lifts on this day. We started walking after a while and soon got yet another short lift south while walking along the road.

(2 people, f, 26 + m, 49) Although without shade, this place looked promising, but it was blocked by a road workers truck. We wanted to wait for them to drive away but as they did they offered us a rather short lift to Jebel which we gladly accepted.

(2 people, f, 26 + m, 49) On a Monday morning this resting area was literally dead. Two trucks were resting for the day and no car pulled in. We were lucky though and got a lift to the next round about with a friendly Romanian who had just stopped here to check if the bottles in his trunk were still in order.

―LariW, August 2026

45.72512, 21.28635

(2 people, f, 26 + m, 49) Not as much traffic going south on the highway as we hoped for. We took the first possible lift just 6 km down to a resting area.

(2 people, f, 26 + m, 49) After fruitless attempts during the previous day we got picked up by the first car in the morning. It took us all the way to Timisoara with a 3 hour stopover in Cluj-Napoka, which was brilliant to take a look at the town.

―LariW, August 2026

47.35582, 25.2707

(2 people, f, 26 + m, 49) Waited for 60 Minutes, but got no lift. Average spot. In the late afternoon it gets really hard to get a lift in these outstretched settlements. We walked down the road and tried at different spots but ended up going into the big public Sauna/Indoor Pool for the evening and camped in the nearby park.

47.34895, 25.33206

(2 people, f, 26 + m, 49) Not a brilliant spot but okayish since you are well visible and it's as much at the edge of town as it gets here. It's a long and populated road. Mostly local traffic on Saturday afternoon and people did not seem in the mood to take us. Started walking further down the road out of frustration and after a hundred metres got picked up for a short lift to Dorna Candrenilor.

―LariW, August 2026

47.34601, 25.34707

(2 people, f, 26 + m, 49) We waited for 5 min but got no lift. Mostly local traffic on this service station in town on Saturday afternoon. Decided to walk to the western edge of town instead.

47.5281, 25.48187

(2 people, f, 26 + m, 49) Not much traffic on a Saturday on this rural little service station. Caught a short lift to Vatra Dornei.

We were stopping to Belgrade and NOONE goes to Serbia, everyone is going to Romania. Otherwise good stopping spot. Good spot for spending time, spent the night in a small forest. Free WC.

The best ride we had on our entire journey from Germany (Dresden) to Romania (Constanta). A really lovely couple gave us a ride all the way – 420 km – to the Black Sea ❤️

Wait for so long and the guy wanted money. It's really diffixult to get out of Bucarest, take a bus honestly, the rest of Romania is much better.

I had an interesting time standing here late in the evening. Has ton of space to stop but not the best visibility because there is a hill in front so it blocks a view but if you stand at the end of bus stop there should be enough time for driver to decide. But either way i got offer to pay 100 euros for two boys to take me to helsinki even tho they are going there and grind never stops for them. But then i laughed and declined. In 5 minutes arrived a romanian guy going back to romania from nordkapp. And he was planning to go on ferry to tallinn which i needed also in the morning so we agreed to sleep in one of parking spots and go together to the ferry. But then I eoke up and he wasnt there so I had to go by public transport because i already had a ticket :((( but it was fun journey. He was shouting more than talking re

After I started asking people I found almost instantly a ride. Some guys that came from Romania and went to work to Sweden came through there and gave me a Ride.

(Two people 26F + 49M) Some local people gave us advice to look for a trip towards Romania from here, because cars with Hungarian and Rumanian licence plates often take breaks on the parking lot. Many also come back from Austria for holiday with Austrian licensed plates and sometimes they are just taking cars to sell them in Hungary or Romania. There were plenty of people hanging out in groups but cars tend to be full. Of course you can also ask at the service station. In our case it gave up a rather short lift to an even better spot at the Austrian/Hungarian border. So if you want to go into Hungary and get a lift to Hegyeshalom take it and have yourself dropped off at the VIGNETTE station, where people pay for the highway toll.

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from Budapest to Arad in Romania (successful). It looks like a very good spot. I was waiting at the end of the last grass island (by the very exit there wasn't enough space to stop) hitchhiking sometimes with a right hand and sometitimes with a left one. Occasionally with both so I looked like Jesus 😁 There is no shade. The toilets are free. After 25 minutes Romanian lorry drivers picked me up and took to Arad.

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from Budapest to Arad in Romania (successful). A very good spot. I was waiting only 5 minuys and I got a lift to the last petrol station before Seged from two women and a young girl. I was waiting at the exit of the petrol station hitchhiking with a right hand cars leaving the station and with a left one those driving along the ramp joining highway. So sometimes I looked like Jesus 😁 There is no shade. The toilet and internet are free at the station.

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from Budapest to Arad in Romania (successful). A very good spot. At the very end of the petrol station there is little space, so I was waiting a bit closer, at the end of the last grass island, hitchhiking once with a right another time with a left hand. And sometimes with both, and then I looked like Jesus 😁 No shade, quite busy traffic, both cars and lorries. There is free internet, but the toilets are paid. After 15 minutes a lorry took me to another petrol station 55 kms along the highway. There were some road works so it took as nearly 1,5 hours 🙄

One male 40+, no sign, one big backpack, a sunny day. On my way from Budapest to Arad in Romania (successful). A very good spot. Legal coz it not a highway yet. Others already described this spot. I only add that place is a bit uphill so lorry drivers may not be keen on stopping here. A 100 meters closer to the center there is a flat and long exit from the petrol station, but it's after a curve so visibility is limited. The choice is yours. No shade, cars coming in waves due to the traffic lights a bit before. After 15 minutes I got a ride to a petrol station 27 kms along the highway, from where quickly I got another lift. The couple even forced a chocolate bar on me 😊

Friendly guy took us to another parking -->Better spot is a little further down the road (last parking before highway split to Nyíregyháza and Romania direction, there is also has station), in this spot there is water + toilet

We got lucky and found very friendly young Hungarian guy after going close to cars with sign. Good spot for both highway directions (Budapest and Romania), from what I know most trucks go to Romania by this road. There is water + toilet and shade from trees.

All the traffic at this point is crossing the border, now that both Romania and Bulgaria are in Schengen, no border checks either, and the cars are going pretty slow and do stop to ask where you're going. Be aware that at the time of my crossing, the bridge was getting renovated, and only one way was open, might be difficult to cross on foot if you wanted to, and might make the waiting times longer. But you can walk up to people and ask to take you!

If you want to go to Poprad people will stop all the time. If not there are some truck drivers who will probably take you to Hungary or Romania.

I waited over 6 hours before getting a lift to Belgrade. People did not want to take me because they were worried about the border, even when I showed them my valid passport. I tried regular thumbing, sign with Belgrade, and asking. Sometimes I asked to go towards Romania, since most cars seemed to be going that way, but it did not work anyway. Mabye I should have spent more time asking people than hitchhiking, but it is the latter that eventually got me out of this hellhole (in which you can find Wifi, free toilets and food). Good luck

I was in no rush, so take my waiting time with a grain of salt. This is a good place. A lot of trucks are going through this place, most of them heading toward Budapest, but after asking for a while, I got a ride directly to Romania.

Went here because the roundabout was being used by local hitchhikers. Took quite a while for some reason but a polish guy on a roadtrip through Romania picked me up for Brașov/Brassó
