Good spot by the poll station to get a ride to Sofia/Bulgaria. There were a few policemen doing controls but they weren’t interested in us and didn’t stop us. You can even reach this spot by foot (that’s what we did) from Dimitrovgrad by hitchhiking to a spot on the local road nearby and then there’s a path to the toll station. (check out the map)
There was a fence around the station but it had big holes you could claim through and toll station employees and police didn’t mind.

Spot to hitchhike up to Babin Zub, the starting points of many hiking routes, including up to Midzor. Even in offside season, we got picked up quite fast. Not many cars, only other hiking tourists, but they are happy to give you a ride.

Spot to hitchhike back from Babin Zub to villages like Crni vrh or further down to the valley after hiking. Fellow hikers are very nice and pick you up to give you a ride down.

Spot to get up into Stara Planina mountains. (Crni vrh village, babin zub) Almost no traffic, but the locals are very nice and helping and you get picked up.

You can just sit there and read a book or so, enjoy the fresh mountain air and every twenty minutes or so when a car comes thumbing.. :) Although this is my experience outside the tourist season. During skiing season or on summer weekends it might be more traffic.

Good spot at the toll to hitchhike out of Nis for both directions! Only disadvantage is that you have to walk a few kilometers to get here (see hitchwiki for directions!) and that there’s no shadow.

Really bad spot! We were dropped off here in the early evening and tried to get to Nis from it. Almost no cars at all stop here.
But you can walk from here to the
Bus station on the other side of the bridge and from there, many busses go to Nis for a cheap price.

It's hard to say how good this place is. We were heading towards Sofia/Istanbul -> the driver heading to Pirot left us there saying it was a good place. Generally, cars don't drive very fast there – they see you and your sign, but there's no gas station or anything like that. After about half an hour, we managed to catch a truck heading to Sofia. There are often queues of trucks at the border, so there's a chance you'll cross the border and ask drivers one by one if they can take you to Istanbul. We finally made it to Sofia that day, but I think there's a chance you'll catch a driver going further.

If you're heading towards Sofia/Istanbul, this is an average spot for hitchhiking; more drivers head towards Greece/Macedonia. We tried to hitchhike at a gas station for 2.5 hours, then moved directly onto the highway. After 45 minutes, a driver heading to Pirot stopped us. I don't know if we were unlucky or if it's actually a bad spot. It's hard to say. (Perhaps we should ask the drivers at the Nais Hotel on the other side.) Overall, it's a good place for a wild camping trip – there's a quiet meadow behind the fence, and if you need one, there's a shop and a toilet.

Very bad spot for trying to hitchhike beyond Belgrade. Only local traffic. Also the employees of the gas station were really unfriendly and asked us to move away from their gas station.
Finally we gave up and put “Belgrade center” on our sign, getting a lift to Novi Belgrade to a bus station immediately. From there we took a bus to the city center and then took anther bus to an appropriate spot on the other side of the city (see hitchwiki!!!). From there it was very easy

We got here accidentally when hitchhiking to Novi Sad. Lots of traffic, but most of them go more far than Novi Sad and can’t drop you off at a highway exit to Nobody Sad because of this “Novi Sad bypass” highway design. (Check it out on a map!) Still we were lucky and got a ride to Novi sad quickly by asking around.

We tried to hitchhike towards Nisz/Sofia, heading towards Istanbul. After a few conversations, we managed (with a good deal of luck) to catch a driver heading towards Nisz. The driver was so kind and positive that he took us to Nisz, even though he was going slightly in the opposite direction. What's more, he took us to a huge dinner at a good local restaurant. (We broke the speed record while hitchhiking, reaching 188 km/h.) Overall, it seems like a great place to hitchhike towards Sofia, with heavy traffic from cars and trucks.

We tried to hitchhike towards Nisz/Sofi. We didn't have time to part well when a very nice TIR driver stopped. He didn't go to Nisz, but he drove us to a large gas station from where it seems that we should easily catch something towards Sofia. In general, the place of great cars slow down is contact with drivers and entry on the A1 road.

Hated this spot. Just locals going nowhere. After 2,5h waiting and asking people, I decided to get to better spot. It was indeed much better. You can walk there (40mins), or you can ask some Serbians to give you 1 minute ride.
I don't recommend this place. Move away from here.

A lot of Serbians cars going after the work (16-17:00) back home. A lot of traffic. I believe this is a good spot (especially for Serbia, where they don't usually take hitchhikers). You don't even need a sign.
True that you won't get far though.

It seems to be a pretty good place to hitchhiking in the direction of Budapest. There is a gas station, a large parking lot for which trucks and passenger cars stand. The station can be reached directly from the E60 road. We tried to catch transport from there to Budapest (from where we wanted to go further towards Belgrade) we were lucky and we came across a driver from Serbia who easily offered us a ride to Belgrade. In general, the traffic is quite high and a lot of locals and tourists. (There is also a Tesla charging station so maybe you can hitchhiking a Tesla)

Somehow we scored a ride to Gyor, which was our direction, but if you're going to Hungary and by some miracle end up here, best of luck. most drivers are either going to Zagreb or alomg the border towards Serbia. the hungarian cars thend to be families of 4. When we were there, it was the middle of July so must of the cars were families going home from vacation so cars were full. After like 2 hours we declined 1 ride to Gevgelija. Another attempt with a Villach/Slovenia sign, on a weekday, not many vans. First day waited 2 hours with no luck, second day was just about to give up when a Serbian guy (going to Serbia) took me. Be patient. There is a supermarket in the village 3 km north, u can use the tunnel to get to the other side of highway and there is a small road that goes to the village. When u get at Bundesstrasse, on your right, just where the forest ends and farm houses bedin, there is a very nice hunters tower where you can spend the nite and save time on pitching the tent

It's a highway and there's a whole unused line for cars to stop. Traffic is going surprisingly slow and drivers can easily see you. Got a ride to Montenegro direction in less than 10 minutes.

Technically hitchhiking on the highway is illegal, but come on, who cares about rules in Serbia?

That's why I love Balkans where you don't get 150 euros fine for doing something innocent and nobody will ever snitch on you.
