We were waiting with my friend, the place wasn’t very busy, but in the end we got a car

This spot it was 😍 amazing. I found a car DIRECTLY to Romania.

Maybe it was the rain, but this was dead. The spot is good in theory, it’s the first services after the Austrian border, and it’s easy to reach from Jesenice. Our walk from the train station was a couple of kilometres, but the underpass and service road maybe it very easy. Adding to that the both the gate to the construction site, and the subsequent one to the services itself were both unlocked, we thought we were in for a treat! (Despite being soaked through to the skin.) Then when we got there, disappointment set it. In was next to silent, and all the traffic was Austrian. Oops. There was nowhere good to stand in the rain, so we resorted to asking, and after a few firm NEINs, we finally met Rosemary. She had never taken a hitcher before and neither her nor her husband spoke any English. The turning point however, was when she learned I spoke Spanish, and decided I’d make some good practice for her on the way! So there we were, two French people soaked to the skin, in the back of a brand new Austrian Merc, speaking Spanish, to an Austrian, on her way to the dentist in Slovenia. If this isn’t why we hitch, I don’t know what is!

The main bus stop at the exit of Mojstrana, easy peasy! I met a French guy in my hostel, he had never hitched before, but we were going to Ljubljana on the same day, so we figured it could be fun if he tagged along! It was pouring down with rain, so we left our bags in the bus stop, and only darted out to stick our thumbs up when we saw headlights in the distance, before retreating back to the dry. This worked wonders! Within 15 minutes we were in the car of Marco and his 90 year old mother, who loving gave us a lift to Jesenice, and offered us the first of a few umbrellas we’d be refusing that day. Marcos mother didn’t speak any English, and my Slovene was sadly not good enough to understand her, but my suspicions were confirmed when upon us leaving the car, she proudly announced “BONNE VOYAGE!”

Undoubtedly a good spot to go to Austria or Ljubljana, as the first four cars that stopped were going to one of these. The is the bus stop for Jesenice hospital, and surprisingly most of the cars that stopped were the ones coming from the hospital road, not the traffic lights. Eventually, Danno gave me a lift to Mojstrana, dropping me right at the front door of my hostel, and giving me some wonderful hiking recommendations whilst I was there! (Notably, Slap Peričnik in the winter!!)

Twenty minutes on a very silent road, most traffic goes up to the motorway, and this road runs parallel, so it’s mainly local traffic. Eventually I got a ride from Edin, an 18 year old Slovene rally enthusiast who thought he was the driver from the French movie “Taxi”. He got me to Jesenice in record time, driving at a heart stopping 160kmh near enough all the way.

A lovely little spot, right on the exit of a roundabout. Stood there on an early February morning for 16 minutes before Andrei gave me a ride to Lesce in his white van. Also a huge thank you to the three lovely old men who decided to stop for a chat whilst I was waiting, who were very patient with my broken Slovene.

Very small traffic here, just trucks and few cars and people are not so friendly. We were waiting for the car for almost 2 hours and finally one older couple took us (2) to Trieste train station, where we took a public transport to the Barcola part of city, where was a good traffic.

Not so good place, but a man recommended us this spot (he saw many people hitchhiking here) so we (2) tried and get a car after 10 minutes to Slovenian-Italian gas station on boarder.

Not so many cars, but high possibility they go to Ljubljana or that direction. We wrote a sign “LJ”. Be careful, in Slovenia the license plates are not always as they are. Nice and helpful people around.

Great spot, we have the sign and got the ride all the way to Maribor. There is good place to stop and also shopping center is near.

thumbing didn't seem to work, barely anyone stopped to ask where we were going (2 of us), and they mostly went either to the city or Maribor direction (we were trying for Hungary straight)

hitchhiking alone, male, early 30s, waiting with sign and asking people directly. the rest area was almost deserted tho

There is a petrol station where you can hitchhike right before the highway, just make sure to have a sign or they won't easily stop.

There is a bus stop, plenty cars and room to stop

Quite busy station, serbian truck driver took me to the austrian border after 10min waiting.

―mandat, October 2025

45.7029, 13.94294

Typical highway station and rest place. Mostly trucks taking obligatory breaks. With some patience you can easily get at least to Ljubljana, with some Celje/Maribor or even Austria or Hungary

―mandat, October 2025

45.69993, 13.83626

Seems like people are not happy to stop at the border for some reason. After 50min one italian guy stopped and he said that it's not good spot to hitchhike and he took me to station on the highway

We waited there for about two minutes with a sign saying “Ljubljana, Graz, Vienna,” and after two minutes, a man from Slovenia with Mercedes picked us up and drove us over to Ljubljana.

A lot of people from Slovenia work in Austria. We (2) asked a guy with a Slovenian license plate and took us directly to gas station next to Maribor which was good spot for our next ride to Ljubljana.

Nice place, and a bit of luck on a way directly to Graz. Guy took us to gas station near Graz airport. Probably good spot to Slovenia - Ljubljana.

First car accepted me. You can take train from Zagreb to Kupljenovo after that 20 min walking .keep in mind that you have to cross the highway to the opposite side if you are going towards Slovenia, when I was there there wasn't much traffic, January morning weekday

It's not a good place for a couple we waited a whole afternoon then slept here in tent on the next morning we found a truck driver who took us to Croatia. If you are alone it can be good there are some trucks there and most of them willing to take one person. ou can go to Slovenia or croatia from here but come here only if you are alone.

If you're going to maribor like me, dont be picky, take the first car even if Its going to zagreb centre, And Hop on a train direction zabok, exit at kupljenovo station and walk around 30 minutes to the gas station. I was picky And wanted to go straight to slovenia, but all Cars went to zagreb.

It seems to be great for Czech and Austria, but actually there are a lot of cars going S1 not A1, highly recommended to make a sign with direction. I waited there almost two hours, but after that I was taken by truck driver going to Slovenia. We managed to get to Brno in his driving time limit.

We wanted to go to slovenia but most of the cars go westwards. There is not much traffic bit people are very nice. Many drivers stopped and asked us where we want to go but it was not our direction. Finally we decided to take a ride to a gas station on the highway that heads to slovenia eventough it was not the shortest way.

We were stopping there with multiple huge signs (slovenia, austria, airport) People passing be were interested and slow down to read the signs (we were creating a small traffic gem) The first guy who stoped was going to austria but didn't have enough space for both of us. After another 3h a guy from germany took as to the airport. The spot is propably as good as it gets around here.

Nice spot, with place for cars to stop, if it's not busy you can also try to hitch both cars from main road and the one from bellow on the opposite side. Got ride to Slovenia in 5min.

Really nice spot. Two cars stopped for me in 5 minutes. Looks like a lot of cars are local tho. Got a 15min ride to Unterloibl Ort, from where it was easy to get ride to Slovenia.

Our direction was Slovenia, Ljubljana. Nobody stopped. We stood there from morning until the afternoon and still no one. In the evening, we finally took a train.

―Simi, August 2025

47.45278, 18.95595

There was no one going towards Slovenia or Croatia. Everyone was local people, and on top of that the gas station was under reconstruction. Only the McDonald's was open, but even there it was just locals.

―Simi, August 2025

46.68319, 13.67234

Bad spot to go to Slovenia. Waited 2h in the evening and 1h in the morning. Asking people directly at the parking spot did not help either. The only good thing is you that you can walk out of the highway to the smaller roads by the back.
