One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, a very sunny day. On my way from Taitung to Kaohsiung.
It's my second time using that spot. (Funny enough, on my both trips between those two cities, the first rides dropped at exactly the same spot :D ). Please read the description of the spot in the previous review. I just add that there is no shade.
This time I waited only 6 minutes. And the ride was straight to Kaohsiung.

One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, a very sunny day. On my way from Kaohsiung to Taitung.
I got dropped at this junction, coz my driver was going left and I needed to go right, straight to Taitung. I walked less than 50 meters and started hitchhiking. The place has a very good visibility, cars starting from the traffic lights, so go slowly. There is also enough place to stop. The only bad thing is lack of shade and it was a very hot day. Luckly I got a ride after 3 minutes. The driver was kind enough to take me to the address I was going to in Taitung.

One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, a very sunny day. On my way from Kaohsiung to Taitung (east coast).
A very good spot. Loads of space to stop. After the traffic lights and a petrol station. Very good visibility. Cars are starting from the lights, so they go slowly. And very importantly there is a little shade. I was hitchhiking around 13:00, and you could fry eggs on the tarmac. So, it's very useful.
After 7 minutes I got a ride from a lady who took me almost all the way to Taitung.

One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, a very sunny day. On my way from Kaohsiung to Taitung (east coast).
This time I felt more confident, coz it was my second time using this spot. Please read the description in my previous review. I only add that there is zero shade. It was midday of a very hot day. Lucky you won't have to wait long here.
The first car stopped after 4 minutes, the second after 6 minutes. I turned down their offers, coz they were going very close and I didn't want to look for a new spot to enter the highway.
The 3rd stopped after 10 minutes and the guy took me 50 kms, to Fangliao, where very quickly I got another ride to Taitung.

One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, a cloudy day. On my way from Tainan to Kaohsiung.
A challenging spot. It wasn't marked on any hitchhiking websites. I've only found info on one of them that the entrances to the highway are good spots. The only problem is that the entrance here is very narrow, with a big and busy junction just before the ramp leading into the highway. Tjere is really not a place for a car to stop. Normally I'd never hitchhike in a spot like that. But I've found something a bit promising. Just before the last traffic lights, before the ramp leading to a highway. There were two good things about that spot. There is an extra lane, about 15-20 m long. An entry into a parking for delivery cars going to shopping centre. And two. The most right lane (the closest to you) is used basically only by the cars entering the highway.
I decided to give it a go.
The spot was very different to others spots in Taiwan I used. One car pulled over just to take off after a second. Two taxis stopped for me thinking I was stopping then. Nothing like that happened before. Also it was my longest wait in this country. But after 25 minutes a woman stopped and took me all the way to Kaohsiung. It turned out that she was just going back from school where she dropped her son. She decided to drive me to another city (50 km up + 50 km down), just because she felt that I was in some danger standing in this busy spot (her words). I'm not sure if it's a good recommendation. In the end it worked. I didn't wait that long. But I've got mixed fillings about this spot. Maybe someone finds a better one elsewhere.
Maybe a sign saying "SOUTH" or with a name of your destination could help a bit?

One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, sunny day. On my way from Kaohsiung to Tainan.
The same story like 10 days before, when I was going south from a spot across the junction. On the other side of the highway there is a mirror place for those going south.
Normally I'd never hitchhike in a spot like that. On a small triangle drawn between 3-lane street and a very busy entrance to a highway, where a few lanes were squeezing to become one. A very busy traffic. No shade.
But all the hitchhiking website were recommending this spot for those going north. And ONLY this spot.
So, I took a few deep breaths, walk up there and put my thumb up. I stood at the (wider) end of the triangle for 20 minutes. A bit longer than normally in Taiwan. But actually two cars stopped before, but I turned their offers down, coz they were stopping before Tainan and I didn't want to look for a new spot. It paid off, coz the 3rd car took me directly to Tainan. And 20 minutes isn't that long after all :)

One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, a cloudy day. On my way from Taitung to Kaohsiung.
My previous ride was going to Kaohsiung, but first they were stopping in Pingdong for a couple of hours. So I decided to look for a good spot before a highway starts. I picked that spot to try my luck with someone else. A perfect decision it was.
It's a very good spot. With loads of room to stop (an empty parking), the traffic was very busy and superb slow. Cars were basically going 10-20 kms/h or even stopping when the nearby lightwas red, so they could see me clearly and they had time to decide.
After 4 minutes I got a ride. Actually two cars stopped at the same time. The first car was going beyond Kaohsiung, but they were kind enough to drop me there. They even went to my destination place and dropped me at the door. Welcome to Taiwan :)

One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, cloudy day. On my way from Taitung to Kaohsiung.
My previous ride dropped me here. The place is very good. Loads of space to stop (some sort of place where lorries were parked), good visibility, not too busy traffic. After 5 minutes I got picked up by a family going to Kaohsiung (my destination). But they were stopping in Pingdong for longer time. So after 80 kms I got off in a nice place and after a few minutes I got a ride directly Kaohsiung.

One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, cloudy day. On my way from Taitung to Kaohsiung.
So so place, coz there was no much space to stop. But I got tired of walking from the city centre, looking for a good spot, so I decided to stop and try this place.
Mid busy traffic, very small side road to stop (enough for a half of a car).
After 15 minutes one guy stopped and offered a short ride to the next town. He was kind enough to drop me at the end of it, in a very good spot. So, I didn't have to waste time looking for a new spot.

One male 40+, no sign, one small backpack, cloudy day. On my way back from Sanxiantai to Taitung.
A very nice spot indeed. After the traffic lights (good visibility), with nice space to pool over. Not very busy traffic, 3-5 cars every light change.
After 5 minutes a nice couple of Taiwanese tourists stopped and took me to Taitung. We stopped in a couple places to check touristy spots. Which I enjoyed very much. In Taitung they even dropped me at the supermarket I was going to shop in.
So, a very successful ride indeed.

One male 40+, no sign, one small backpack, cloudy day. On my way from Taitung to Sanxiantai.
It was after the curve, so not the greatest visibility. But the traffic was very quiet. And the cars were going slowly, coz it was after the traffic lights. There was enough space to stop on a scooter lane. There are also trees giving shade.
After 5 minutes I got a ride all the way to Sanxiantai. The driver was kind enough and he even got off the main road, 2 kms each way, to drop me at the car park of that tourist attraction.

One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, sunny day. On my way from Kaohsiung to Taitung (east coast).
I got dropped at the junction and walked south for about 50-100 metres, a bit passed a very small bus stop.
Very good visibility from the cars standing at the red, 3-5 cars every change of lights. Not so much space to stop, but there was a scooter lane. No shade.
After 5 minutes of waiting I got a ride from two women, straight to Taitung.

One male 40+, no sign, one small backpacks, sunny day. On my way across the bridge to the island.
Technically it wasn't hitchhiking. I was just walking to the island when the scooter stopped and older lady took me across the tunnel.
It turned out pedestrians are not allowed in the tunnel (my map was showing otherwise).
On my way back the same thing happened. The difference was that I walked into tunnel more. And that time it was an older man who took me to the mainland.

After someone dropped me in Chenggong i decided to visit the very beautiful Sanxiantai rocks, going there with a ubike. However after i finished i had to walk north around 30 minutes to find the most suitable spot to get picked up by cars going north. When i got there though, the wait was short.
As usual i had my laminated paper sign with whiteboard marker, this time writing Wang Bei (going north) so as to get picked by any car.

Walked 10 minutes out of town to the last crossing to get a car who went to Tuchengzi. There's a huge temple there. Then i took the ubike and crossed the beautiful national park, and arrive to the Anping old town touristic area. Nice plan.

Needed to go to Keelung, was picked up very quickly despite this tough stretch. Cars have a lot of place to stop and can see you from far away. There’s also a red light not far so cars will have to slow down

Had to walk « quite a bit » from the hot air balloon festival, there’s a lot of cars and motorbikes leaving the place, so I just think I wasn’t the luckiest. Still found a ride to Taidong after a reasonable time (long time according to my standards of hitchhiking in Taiwan)

This small island is super hitchhikeable. This was my go to spot to get to the other side of the island. Hitchhiking anywhere on the big road that goes around the island is also definitely gonna work, you just gotta wait for people to pass (small island but quite touristic, so it’s all about luck). My hitchhiking experience on this island was extremely good!
