Not many cars driving far but eventually will work.

Very few cars but of they drive far, they will pick you up. Make sure it's for free of course.

After the bridge heading towards Dushanbe. Saw the first car after an hour. Chinese border was closed for a week though so normally you would probably see some trucks. Really bad road, don't expect to get far quickly.

Slovenian overlanders picked me up somewhere here, don't remember exact spot. Anywhere works. Road is bad though so slow progress.

Anywhere on this road should work. No need to walk this far.

This is where few locals were hitchhiking too. Some shade under a tree to wait for cars. Not that much traffic, especially going far. Got very lucky with a Chinese couple going all the way Dushanbe. Still better to take this road to Dushanbe than the northern one.

Walked a bit after the roundabout past the shared taxis. Might take a while to find a free ride as there's many taxis and people asking for money but you will get one eventually. Didn't take me too long to find one to Ayni. Many drive to Khujand.

To Panjakent/border. Not as busy as to north towards Khujand but still decent amount of traffic.

Many cars coming and driving within the city. Quiet some space on the side to stopp for especially trucks. After some minutes I had luck with a truck driver who drove all the way to Dushanbe

Got dropped off by a truck after the big tunnel at the street in the middle of nowhere. Right after getting off the first car stopped and took me all the way to Khujand. Some traffic for sure for everyone going to Pandschakent or Khujand so should work fine in general and I guess especially locals are even more helpful and interested to help anybody standing here

Took the bus number 3 to the final destination. Once you are out, many taxi drivers will appear so go straight. Many people on the side due to that but many cars and truck coming after the roundabout. The second truck stopped and took me until the big tunnel but with with a bit more luck you could get another one not driving to one of the mines in the surroundings

Again, very easy for me, there was a car with a guy from UK and he had an empty seat for me! He took me from the border to Osh. But only 3 stars because I realize i was lucky. I spoke to a girl later this week and she was stuck at this border for 24h because there was not much traffic (I think weekdays are better??)

Again, very short waiting time for me. There is almost no traffic, so make sure you go to the road early. When there is traffic, they all go to the same direction so that makes it "easier".

Waited for only a few minutes, but maybe i was lucky (and it helps i'm a female-solo-traveller). There's not so much traffic here, but a truck with military people stopped for me after a short time of waiting.

It almost feels like no mans land. If you go here, bring a waterfilter just to be sure! I waited 4 hours and saw 0 cars. The first car I saw had space, so they picked me up! :) my experienxe here is when people have space in the car, they will often take you. So even with almost no traffic, it's still possible. But come prepared to this remote place (water + food).

Very little trafic, so be prepared to wait a long time. I waited 5 hours and only 5 (full) cars passed. The 6th car offered me a ride!

Don't go too late. In the evening there's barely any traffic going towards the highway, as most tourists leave in the afternoon already.

Great spot, as most traffic is going down the lake - be prepared to wait a bit though. Most cars are either already full during high season, or want money. Wait for a truck (as of 07/2025 there are some going regulalry for getting sand from the lake) - we were taken by an old Kamaz truck which was quite the adventure on the mountain pass. Trucks, ofc, are pretty slow though so keep that in mind.

Nobody stops. Ultimately a truck driver from Tajikistan took us 2 exists further. Worthless.

Here is the main exit form Kokand to Khudjand in Tajikistan. Either try dozens of local cars or use bus to Besharyk and further (price from Kokand to border is 0,5 usd)

After crossing into Uzbekistan ignore the armada of taxi drivers and walk a bit further on out of their sight. There's basically no through traffic here except some few trucks coming from Tajikistan (around two trucks/hour).

To Murgab: From Sary Tash town, walk down the towards Tajikistan, the road splits at a police stop. Wait there for cars going left towards the snowy mountains. Alot of trucks from China to Tajikistan no longer go through here and hitchhiking (for free) is incredibly difficult. Even for paid transport to Murgab, waiting times are long.

Here is Tajikistan-China cargo Terminal located. Talk with truck drivers. Direct lifts to Dushanbe, Khujand, Pejikent, Murgab.
