Getting out of Bulunkul is very difficult. There are only a few cars in the village so don't count on them. Some tourists 4WD also go through but most of them are full. I know there are sometimes marshrutkas to Alichur, but we couldn't find one that day. We started walking and eventually some overlanders picked us up but it definitely felt like we could have walked the whole way - on our way we also picked up an old man that had been walking for 2 hours.

In my experience, it's better to get to this point as sometimes cars arrive from the small track instead of the main road. Not much traffic but eventually someone will take you. Almost everyone driving here goes to Kyrgyzstan, but if you find someone heading to Rangkul it can be nice to change of setting a bit !

Here's the start of the northern route towards Khorog/Pamir. Quite tricky with a long montaneous track part with low traffic. Probably more adventurous than the southern route but doable if you have the time and you feel like it. Check the following spots for more precise info :)

From Tavildara, going over the pass becomes tricky. You'll easily find a ride out of the city but cars going over the pass are very rare - in our experience about one per hour. One will eventually take you, or you can also count on trucks as there are a few travelling across - be ready for a long journey though !
After the pass the road is scary / borderline dangerous. If you don't feel safe on acrobatic cliffside track sections you will have a bad time. Amazing scenery all the way though, makes waiting pleasant !

You can use this road to reach Darvoz and move on towards Khorog. Beware however that the traffic is pretty low and this is the entry to a long valley with sketchy dirt tracks only, it will take a lot of time.
At this location, the traffic is very low and you may wait for a long time, but take the first ride you can even if it's a short one as once you are in the valley, there are more cars and it becomes a bit easier to reach Tavildara. After Tavildara, the traffic going over the pass is very very scarce and the road is a quite scary track on cliff edges at some parts. It will probably take a full day to reach Darvoz from there. Easier option from Dushanbe to Khorog is to take the southern route, but this one is really beautiful and well worth it if you're ready to struggle a bit !

Easy to get lifts here in the direction of Darband. Took us a few rides to get there, but we never has to wait.

Don't get fooled by Google Maps ! This is not the road people to go to Darband. I doubt you can successfully reach it here as there is no traffic. Instead go to the location I appointed as the lift destination on the other side of Obi Garm. There is a brand new asphalt road with plenty traffic to Darband.

Don't take this road but the one who go South-East of the city. Not many cars, no trucks so I needed to walk (only 30 minutes walk) to join the intersection with the other road

After the bridge heading towards Dushanbe. Saw the first car after an hour. Chinese border was closed for a week though so normally you would probably see some trucks. Really bad road, don't expect to get far quickly.

Here is the main exit form Kokand to Khudjand in Tajikistan. Either try dozens of local cars or use bus to Besharyk and further (price from Kokand to border is 0,5 usd)

After crossing into Uzbekistan ignore the armada of taxi drivers and walk a bit further on out of their sight. There's basically no through traffic here except some few trucks coming from Tajikistan (around two trucks/hour).

To Murgab: From Sary Tash town, walk down the towards Tajikistan, the road splits at a police stop. Wait there for cars going left towards the snowy mountains. Alot of trucks from China to Tajikistan no longer go through here and hitchhiking (for free) is incredibly difficult. Even for paid transport to Murgab, waiting times are long.
