It's just pure luck, the guy happened to pull over for his lunch break.

Good spot to wait for a car, some shade under the trees (necessary in mid day), at the exit of Esso gas station. I waited around an hour, and got a ride for Tak.

Come here, opposite "SMALL COFF SLOWBAR". The cool young guys in the café will help you find a ride to Betong. They literally let me sit in the garden offered a cold coffee while one of them, Husen, was hitchhiking on my behalf. They immediately gave my contact to 2 brothers in Betong who later picked me up by their scooters, treated me with Roti and rice, offered me a shower at their family's home which is also a second hand clothing shop to trade your stuff at, showed me around the town and took me on scooter first and on foot then up to the Malaysian passport control, way after sunset. Don't hitchhike opposite the gas station 150m east under the tree shade, drivers are too busy with not running into each other

Wonderful road and amazing people. This is PTT, the first gas station to the south direction. How to get here? From Yala train station, exit the building, turn right and walk 150m till the Songthaew (shared, open taxis) on the right, ask for Bannang Sareng (south of Yala town, 20baht) or Krong Pinang (here, 30 baht). Songthaews should leave also Saha Yala transport company (check google maps), not sure about the main bus terminal in the west. If you get a ride to the next town Bannang Sata follow my indications on the green hitchhiking spot below 👇🏽

Very nice traffic light, 145 seconds of red light vs 54 seconds of green light, a lot of traffic.

This guy goes through everyday and picks every hitcher. But from my understanding Thai ppl donuts have problems picking us so it should be easy. Take the nearby metro here and walk to this spot

Leaving Bangkok Take the local old-style bus 68-REG from Bang Lamphu to Samut Sakhon for 28 baht. Pay attention and ask the driver, as there's another bus n. 68 driving within the city. It took 90 minutes on Sunday 1pm, while Maps suggests 180 minutes in weekdays. Don't get off at the intercity vans stop close to pier and trains, where most passenger go. (You can see the highway from that bus stop) Wait for the local bus terminal. Walk 5 minutes to the last entrance into the highway. Cars leaving the town are queueing and have time to approach you. A kind girl driving around on her free day offered me a ride to Phetchaburi even she was just planning to go 10km far, she gifted me an umbrella

The perfect place to hitchhike to Chiang Mai because the road goes straight there. There is a gas station and a 7/11 so cars go slow and there are plenty of places to stop. I started at 7:30am and within 5-6 minutes I was picked up by a car

Spot was pretty bad, traffic moved too quickly. Only got a lift because a trucker who was parked up next to me happened to be going to Bangkok. Ended up getting off a little early in Samut Songkhram

Just after the petrol station there is room for cars to kinda pull over, no shade, the far lane is normally moving fast but because people exit the petrol station the close lane is slow enough to flag down.

Legit less than a minute and a Ute pulled over and I jumped in the back. Not the most shade but probably the best spot going south from Hat Yai. (Also the two lads that were there on the same day I was, shoot me a message, the last guy I was with got a photo of you Insta@kjmurrag1230)

Pretty good spot, hid in the shade of a signpost. Lots of space for cars to stop. Trucks too. Had 6 people stop, ask if I was ok, and offer to take me to the bus station. Difference between Thailand and Cambodia was very obvious.

In the morning there’s shade from a big billboard. Close lanes are moving slow. I stood just down from the petrol station, there is room for cars and maybe a medium truck to pull over. Bonus points for this spot it has a good spot out the back of the Amazon cafe you can sleep if you have a mat

Kinda had some shade from a telegraph pole. I stood just down from the exit of the petrol station with a Chumphon sign. Super friendly staff there gave me water. The cars in the car lanes are booking it but the closer lanes are slow and easy to flag down

Good spot, not too much shade, got picked up and dropped further down but is probably a really good spot to get a lift right down south

PTT gas station - This is one of the best spot in Bangkok to hitchhike south. I was going south, then I wrote a sign to Samut Songkhram (สมุทรสงคราม) first, but the car only took me to Samut Sakhon (สมุทรสาคร), 10 km away. You can get a cardboard from automobile shop at the end of gas station ** PTT station is the best gas station to hitch a ride in Thailand.

great spot for heading south or north, lots of room for cars to pull over. This is one of the main north/south transport links in thailand. i found a ride for all the way to bangkok! i waited maybe between 1-2 hours

many many cars heading north. small layby for stopping (its thailand, so no need for gas station to wave cars down, they stop anywhere!) found a lift to nakhon sawan quite quick. remember to use both western and asian methods of stopping cars (western thumb and asian vertical hand wave)
