You’ll be fine I’m not sure why the other reviews say it is hard. Turkish people like hitchhikers and it would be easy to go to edirne. Me and 2 other guys waited for a ride to Istanbul and got it rather quickly after dark at 8 pm. Not a bad place to wait a long time, borders are always good and there is a 24 hour gas station to sleep if it gets cold. If you have 2 people put one in the car lane and one in the truck lane. If you are by yourself I think it’s probably similar just go with your gut

Not a lot of cars. Visibility is ok and there is ample room to stop. Almost everyone will be going to Trabzon.

Not a lot of cars but there is enough room to be seen and for cars to make a stop. There is a supermarket here as well

Not a lot of stops and most don’t go all the way to gürlevik.

Not a lot of traffic and most cars don’t go to Istanbul. Gas Station personnel was nice and gave me tea and advice. Look for cars with 34 on the numberplate as this is the city code for Istanbul. Stand near the highway so you’re not limited to the gas station traffic.

Perfect spot towards Bursa. With a sign we easily found a truck driving us in the late evening. Two males.

Great spot to find drivers to Bursa and further. Found two guys who were willing to directly drive us to our place for the night and invited us for dinner as well.

Bad spot to hitchhike towards south. Try to find someone going to the ferry in Eskihisar

Not the busiest service station. The one's closer to Istanbul are probably way busier. It had maybe 10 cars and 4 trucks on a tuesday afternoon. But it still works.

It got me out of Istanbul very quickly but it's not the best spot. I couldn't figure out a better one though so maybe this is the one you should use. Sign necessary.

Just keep walking after rhe border and find a spot with good visibility. Not that much traffic on a weekday afternoon but eventually someone will pick you up. I got very lucky with a ride all the way to Samsun. Had a sign saying "Trabzon".

Couldn't even finish making my sign when a friendly guy told me to hop in. Not the busiest gas station but not that quiet either.

Okay spot but took me a while to find a ride. Continuous flow of cars and pretty fast speeds. Tried just a thumb, a sign saying "100km" and finally a sign "Merzifon". Eventually got a ride 50km onwards to a gas station.

To Kayseri. Probably easy for Ankara. I tried both before and after the traffic lights. After there's a place to stop but many already drive somewhat fast at that point.

To Nevşehir. Anywhere on this road works pretty much. Maybe even better before this towards Göreme for better visibility.

Great spot to leave Cappadocia area. Cars drive quite fast but it was still pretty good. Can get here with a bus from Göreme or by hitchhiking of course.

Decent spot. I stood before the ramp rather than on it. Got here with few rides from Göreme. Cars go very fast but there's room to stop and there's enough of traffic. Tried first with a "Ankara" sign and after that thumb. Got lucky with a direct ride to Istanbul.

Sorry.

Sed mi kredas ke vi povas provi iomete plu iomete pli malproksime. Ĉi tie vendredo posttagmezi estas tro multa. Mi havis bonŝanson.

We waited at the entrance of the petrol station for two hours with a sign that said: Szeged Románia felé. One car stopped, but we had too much luggage (two people, two backpacks, two instruments) and then two turkish truckers took us to the border of Turkey in two days.

Let me cross on foot Kurdistan to Turkey. Iraqi/Kurdistan officers stopped a random car for me to get in to go over bridge (walking forbidden), told them taxi is too expensive.

We asked around the parking lot and like 6th car driver was from Turkey driving truck with fish to Rotterdam so we waited with him until his pauze ended and then enjoyed great ride, singing and eat some turkish meals with him while driving to Neatherlans.

Definitely not a great spot, during summer a lot of packed cars from Germany driving to Turkey, almost no locals (Serbians, Bulgarians). On the other hand, we found a car going directly to Sofia.

Hitchhiked without a sign. Had memorized the city names of "Generalovo" and "Kapitan Andreevo".
Driver asked me where I was going to. Said the two names and he asked to get in. I said I was going to Turkey and he drove me to the parking spot next to the border.
Not a lot of cars, but slow traffic and a big area for parking.

Horrible spot. You have to stay next to a bus stop and only traffic from a certain part if town goes there because the main road, which is only a few feet away but highway with nowhere to stand and fast cars is going through a short tunnel kind of. Stood there for 4 hours without result and made me use buses for 3 weeks afterwards because I thought Turkey doesnt work. Was wrong if course and later it was so easy but it traumatized me. Get a dolmus to go further south or try before the tunnel that splits the road.

I second that it is very difficult to get greek people to stop for you. we ended up asking people at customs and finally getting a ride to thessaloniki (by an albanian). not sure what my advice is, it will be difficult, also seems pretty impossible to hitchhike from the highways as there is literally almost no traffic the whole way. might actually be best to stand directly on the highway. from thessaloniki to turkey we ended getting a bus

Most traffic is going to Burgas. Got stuck here all sunday afternoon + monday morning.
Cars are full, I asked to truck drivers but all declined until one drive me tl little before Svilengrad.
For Turkey better to wait longer to get a direct ride from Sofia/Plovdiv.

About 100 minutes by bus from the city but worth it! You can walk to the rest stop and through the toll station (Not recommended) or Jump the fence Right After the station (recommended). I used a sign with the greek and turkish spelling of Turkey.

Cars coming fast, not much place to stop, but this whole region in Turkey is very good for hitchhiking and we were picked up immediately anyway while we were walking.

April 2022. After a whole year travelling across Turkey and learning how to become a nomad while waiting for Iranian border to re-open as well as escaping pandemic, after a whole winter in Georgia. Finally i came again to Doğubeyazıt and got a relaxing ride by a truck. I was so excited and speechless that i even fell asleep on the way to Gürbülak. You have to leave the car and walk through the border, that's quicker. I found the same truck on the other side and they hosted me in Marand.
Let the safest, most welcoming and freeminded population guide you across Persia!

This is the spot you can use to get out of Turkey to Bulgaria. My experience in October 2021 was rewarding. I came to the border gate and the officials said "you can't walk" (it's been like that for years) and when I stood up few hundreds metres before, soldiers from Jandarma told me to get backwards and try asking at/inside restaurants. This doesn't work if you, like me, look Middle Eastern so the truck drivers will ignore you thinking you're irregular. So I took a dolmuş back to the pinned gas station and waited 2 hours (could be much less) until a Turkish man took me with him to casino in Svilengrad, offered me the entrance and a private hotel bedroom.

best way to go to Turkey, ask the Turkish truck driver.
It may be complicated to get there from Thessaloniki city centre, you need to take the bus to Analipsi and from there walk to this rest station in about 20 mins
