It’s a good spot, easy for cars to stop but no one did. After a long wait a truck driver gave us a ride to Vinh

Lot’s of taxis, motorbikes & limousines stopped and many cars that stopped asked for money.
One guy offered to pay the bus for us & take us there. Eventually a father with his teenage son took us to Tam Cóc

There weren’t many cars but we got a direct ride to Hanoi. Some taxi drivers will bother you.

Someone dropped us here. This is an unofficial bus stop so every few minutes busses stop to Dong Dang border town. There’s also a Bánh mì stand. We didn’t persist long & paid 200k each for a bus. They asked 300k at first.

There is some space under the bridge where people sell some food and beverages. Not a perfect spot but good towards north like Hanoi

Lot of traffic, a bit on the highway so some drivers get mad

Doesn’t show it on the maps but there’s a big wide spot on the road (under where that big arch thing is) which gives heaps of space for people to pull over. Had a Phnom Penh sign (in Khmer) which didn’t help. As soon as I wrote one for Mộc Bài I got picked up in about a minute. Most people will drive you to the border if they’re going that way

Super good spot for going both directions, few good cheap street food places to grab a bite too.
Got a lift mid morning into saigon

I wasn’t picked up here but we stopped for lunch (with a truck that had already got me) and I scoped it out and it’s a solid spot for both directions. Not sure why anyone would be around here as there is a better one closer to Hue but if you walk around with a sign or just signal you’ll get something

There’s a good spot for hitching after the lights but busses do regularly stop there. I had a few nice locals offer me lunch and then (after I explained to them) they explained to a bus driver and got me a free lift to ninh binh. Just got lucky but it is a good spot.

Super good spot. I think it’s technically more legal as it’s not on the highway yet. The cars have to go round a sharp corner to get onto the road so you can catch them when they’re slow. Have a sign for ninh binh and a good smile

Good spot to grab someone as they come down the hill and slow for the roundabout. These trucks/cars are aiming for the main highway (CT01) down to Vinh. I had a Vinh sign and got lucky with a truck heading right down to Saigon.

If staying on An Binh island, good spot to go to HCMC or other Mekong delta city. Found a direct ride in 5min, lots of scooters but enough cars. Bus station near by with super cheap buses if it fails ! Reached it by moto-taxi.

Police was there and stopped a limousine bus so we could get in, for free. Really good spot anyway to go east, lots of traffic and space to stop.

Best way to start trip from Ho Chi Minh to east. To reach this place you can use local bus 88 from city center.

After I got dropped off I was kind of worried because the sun was setting and I was really in the middle of nowhere at a random junction. I was also worried about visibility, because it didn’t look like there were any streetlights. Cars we also sparse, as only every couple minutes would a car/ truck actually turn onto the ramp in the direction I needed. A pickup truck passed me and I’m pretty sure he was rolling coal at me but it also could have been intentional because he did it again on the highway so it could have just been something wrong with his truck. Luckily, after 30 minutes of waiting a semi truck stopped for me. The driver didn’t have great English but he asked me if I needed money or something. I told him that I didn’t, but then he asked me where I was going, and I told him Rolla, which was an hour down I-44. He said okay, get in, and cleared a space for me next to him. I was sitting on a box of waterbottles, and he offered me the food he had (grapes and oatmeal). He is from Vietnam and has been driving this truck in the states for nine years ever since he moved. His English name is Tommy, and his Vietnamese name is Phúc. He has a wife and a fourteen year old daughter in Los Angeles, and he spends ten days driving food from Los Angeles to New Jersey, and then back, and then he gets to spend a week at home. He knows the name of every town on the highway. Every year he goes with his family to visit Vietnam, in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). He drives around eleven hours a day, and that night he was planning on stopping in Oklahoma City, which was another six hours. He loves to listen to country music as he drives, and he calls with his family. After the hour drive to Rolla, he dropped me off at exit 185, and tired to give me an $100 dollar bill. I told him I couldn’t accept that, and that I didn’t need the money. He said I should buy food for my girlfriend, but still I said I couldn't accept it. Finally he agreed to only give me $5, in return for my buying something nice for me girlfriend and I said I would say it is from him :). Overall one of the nicest people I have met. I thanked him in Vietnamese (Cảm ơn).

This is where trucks leave after passing customs from Vietnam. I didn't personally have any luck here, but that could have been because I got there late in the day and they weren't going far. Also locals there getting picked up, but seemed to be prearranged.

A lot of trucks going all the way to Vietnam, if you’re lucky you’ll find a two-days ride to Hanoi (maybe a bit longer). If not still a great spot, there’s a grocery and a tires repairer so lots of people will stop

Once you cross the border from Vietnam to Laos, you probably will get stuck for a few hours! No traffic at all ! So, take water with you and some snacks! And wave your hands! I was waiting 5 hours for the first ride like 80km

Hitchhiked to Vinh, but it was hard over Vietnam because many Bikes, Buses, Taxi going in first line and people on cars have a small chances to stop. I'm pretty lucky!
