Aire de Berchem-Ouest

Got a ride to Barcelona (our final destination!) on a Saturday morning.
Stood with « Lyon/Dijon » near the Auchan in a point where roads from the gas station and parking merge, there is space for cars to pull over. Lots of drivers from, L, NL, D, F and B.

Well, we wanted to go to france from trier so we decided to go to berchem by train and start our journey here since the reviews and everything looked great. And it is a great stop. BUT what surprised us - the bridge across the autobahn got demolished but is still shown on google maps. We discovered this when we got there (lol) and luckily they already built another one in sight, but we still had to walk about an hour more than planned. When we got to the station we had to cross/ get through 3 fences. That was not so hard since two of these were construction site fences, aka not permanent and relatively easy to get through. The next one was already torn down. But the last fence we had to climb over to finally get to the station. We picked the spot where the trucks are parking at the end of the station, i would say it is the best option to get to berchem. I dont know why they built these fences but you have to be physically fit to enter berchem from the outside. Getting there by car is no problem. Once we where there it was around 12:00, we found a lovely couple in around 30 minutes that took us to metz. We were two people and we had a sign.

Final conlusion: it is a great spot but you have to overcome some challenges to get there :)

Started here many times since I live in Luxembourg. Luck varies: from 2 minutes to 1h. Lots of long distance traffic I guess but no one ever took me further than Nancy/Toul...

5min to catch a car to Strasbourg using France sign.
***01/01/2020*** transportation will be free in the country so you don't have to worry anymore about 4euro to arrive to Berchem

I took the train till Berchem station from Luxemburg central, then walked for 20min till the Service Area, you need to go round it till almost the end where you will see an open gate for trucks and you can enter through it. After that, I waited at the exit from the parking lot, behind the store, for 10 min and got a ride to Dijon. Lots of cars on Sunday morning!

Amazing place, even a little better than the other service station in Luxemburg. I got a ride once straight to Lure (close to Belfort) where I needed to be, without even trying.

Really good place. In 15 min 3 cars stopped. One was going to Germany, second to Strasbourg and the third one to Paris which we took. There were other guys which were taken in 15 min as well. Good luck ;)

I was there on a sunday in july at 10:30am and got a lift to Dijon (the car was going to Geneva). Very good spot !

If you stand with a sign, this station is perfect. A lot of the cars will pass you twice, with give them plenty of time to consider picking you up.
It is worth waiting for a ride to go south/east of Metz at least!

loads of traffic (mostly short distances so have a sign)..very popular spot with a big fence around. however you can get in from the staffs' parking lot (no need to cut the fence like we saw some hitchhikers had done)

perfect spot. I got a car to Montpellier

Took me 30 minutes asking at the petrol station to find a direct ride to Lyon on a sunday. The station is so big that sometimes I didn't have time to ask all the people stopping.

Great place. After about an hour (it was raining that day) on a Sunday afternoon I got a lift from a man heading to Besançon

Me and my girlfriend got a lift by two trucks Stuttgart (Sindelfinger Wald station) in 30 minutes.

Makuc, August 2014
easy to reach by bus & much international traffic --> trucks!

Friends of mine asked on Aire de Berchem and after 15 minutes the got a ride to Lyon.

Best place in Luxembourg after my experiences.

Posty, March 2014
I waited there around 12h because I was looking for only cars going far away (near Lyon). Many people offer us (me & my friend) to bring us 100 or 200 km in the south.
Good tip : ask for trucks (trucks are forbidden every Sundays in France)

Depending on where you go, it's definitely a good spot. If you are planning to go back to direction Saarbrücken coming from Luxembourg, it is a hard spot if you wanna find a direct hitch.
We then decided to take the route via Metz to SB. To Metz/Nancy/Thionville it's easy to find cars.

Be patient and you will find amazing lift! this place is magical!

Perfect spot! Perfect! Went easily to Germany (Mannheim) (5min)

Totally agree: Luxembourg is a heaven for petrol tourists from France and the Benelux. Great place.

Really good spot, got a hitch in like 15-20min to Dijon.
Especially in summer you have a lot of cars, however most of them with families so it might be much more difficult if you hitch-hike with 2 or more people

Nostalgique, July 2012
service station of cars going to everywhere in france, also to switzerland or freiburg
