We (Girl & Boy) started asking around 14:45 and got a ride in 1 1/2h ! There were two other hitchhikers with us and they also got picked up relatively quickly. One with a sign and one asking the cars directly. I recommend doing both or atleast talking to them, that way they see how you are and you can google translate. Great spot 😁🌱rating: 4/5, wait: 90 min 💬, ride: 333 km ↑

Good spot for catching! Lot's of cars going to A1 highway! We waited for 15-20min and a guy took us to the bus station and paid for our tickets to Porto!?!?! If you're going north it's a great place to stand!

Its easy to get here by public transport but we didn´t get a ride within 1,5h and then went to another spot a few kilometers down the road and got a ride within 20min. Most people from the gas station went back to Lisboa.

it is good you stand in the shade if you want super easy to go there good amount of traffic. you have to ask the people in portugese

A lot of traffic is heading into town/suburbs. Easily reachable by public transport, no need to climb fences.

spent 2 hours waiting with no luck, would of got a ride after 20mins if we spoke Italien or Portuguse, beacuse the guy wanted us to talk to his kids. There is not that much traffic and I can't see many people using this gas station if they are heading to Lisbon

Another try there, 2 h to get a ride. My boyfriend and I were going direction Coimbra, another hitchhiker we met on the station - to Santiago de Compostela. The two of us managed to find a ride from a driver going to Braga, who also agreed to take the other hitchhiker. Speak, speak, speak with the drivers, be as polite as you can, they might not be very familiar with the idea of hitchhiking, but when addressed personally in the right way they are very friendly in majority of the cases.

Don't listen to this crazy comment upper! The spot is good and HAS a road coming back on a highway DIRECTLY, cars don't need to come back to lisboa to go on A1 north. Direct drive to Oporto after 45 min refusing not direct drive proposals earlier. Go there with a metro, go out on Encarnacao metro station and walk aprox. 10-15 min to the gas station, no need to jump the fence, just simple and elegant spot!

Good localization, just before highway, and plenty of cars. However, most of the traffic is local, and it's better asking than just standing. It took us 3 hours to get a ride just to Alverca. (15th June 2014)

a lot of people will stop very quick, but be sure where you want to go,

Btw, that was in summer 2013. in August.

Very very BAD spot! First, because cars that stop there are from neighborhoods from left and right of that gas station, and most important - if cars want to go on highway north of Lisbon from that place, they can't go straight north, but have to go on "round" way ABOVE hightway (like 50m from gas station), then BACK towards centre of Lisbon some 1km, then again on "round" way above highway to return on the direction for north! That means, people who are going north are NOT STOPPING at that station, unless they made a mistake. I waited 6 hours, and two Polish guys I met there waited 12H!! I had luck with some French couple who made mistake and stopped there. Also, some Portuguese people told me that I have to be careful at that gas station cuz it's in bad neighborhood, but to be honest, I didn't see anything suspicious.. Good luck!

very good spot although many cars instead of going north just return to Lisboa ;)

good spot. traffic is mostly local/regional though, therefore we took a lift to the next service area at the A1 called "aveiras". There it was no problem to find a lift going further north.
―Momsen, July 2012
good spot, i use it often. waiting time can go from 10 min to 2 hours..! anyway prepare to ask a lot of people, as many drivers are not going to the A1 motorway.
―Ratodoporao, June 2012
Good spot. No worries, also it seems that the road splits 50 metres before the gas station, there is a possibilty for cars to directly enter the highway again after it!
―Poebbels, February 2012
great spot right before the highway and easily reach with public transportation
―Mdsmendes, January 2011
If you want to head north of Lisbon this is the place to start! Ask to head towards Highway A1
