We got a ride pretty fast (a traffic jam before the border) to Switzerland from a Swiss guy (the only Swiss ever that has given us a ride)... You can ask at the gas station AND still have the sign/thumb up―Thejourneyramino, July 2014
we waited 20 minutes and got a ride to mendrisio, from a girl who often picks up hitchhikers.
however, if you get a short ride, i would recommend declining and staying in this spot.

The Gas station before Chiasso is on construction so this is the best option going inside Italy to Milano
